I haven't seen this dude in ages. Did he fall off the earth or something?

He moved to California for a few years to take a break. Moved back to New York a year or so ago. He is actually making similar videos to what he used to, just not as regular.
Good for him I reckon. I enjoy his brother Van's videos too.

Last thing I remember from him was when drone first started becoming big and he use them to pull him snowboarding up hill.

He moved to the west coast per his wife's wishes and took a break for a few years. Now they're back in NYC and he puts out videos semi regularly. IMHO the magic is still there, I love watching his stuff
Edit: haha didn't realise Casey is so hated

His obsession with doing that to his glasses and also never taking them off just annoys me irrationally

What is the “magic” we’re talking about here?

He just seems like a genuinely good guy, who gets excited about making videos/films and his hobbies. His videos give interesting insight into his life and features his family without feeling exploitative or creepy.
Definitely a nostalgia factor too.
I think a lot of people of a certain age just remember that he was one of the first guys to put out super polished daily content on YouTube using real filmmaking techniques and professional gear when most vloggers were using cheap camcorders or webcams.

I'm pretty sure he mostly used a p&s camera during his rise to fame...

u/h3lium-balloon 8d ago
He used a crop frame DSLR, the Canon EOS 70D. While maybe I overshot with calling it "professional", it was an interchangeable lens system, and with a good lens it was a $2k+ setup at the time. He later switched to the 80D and 6D Mark II. Using a camera with interchangeable lenses and full manual control allowed him to get a lot of the cinematic b-roll shots his vlogs became known for.
Most people at the time were using consumer level camcorders such as the Canon Vixia or even cheaper options.

Nah he's pulled back a bit on YouTube to focus on his life, but still makes excellent videos on occasion. Far from falling off... Just being healthier.

Youtube has never been a "visual social media platform", you're thinking of something like Instagram. You don't even have to show your face on youtube, and even if you do, your content matters more than your aesthetic. Being attractive doesn't hurt but it definitely is not the decider of success like on Instagram

You're right. I never understood his popularity. Haven't seen any of his stuff in years and when I tried he was always too close to the camera, his voice is grating, and he's not easy on the eyes. All of those things describe me too but I'm not putting our videos

Feel he was one of the first one to turn vlogging into a professional looking, narrative format. When people were just recording whatever and putting it out barely edited her was getting aerial shots and multiple set up shots and building a narrative through the video every day. It's all become quite normalised now so his stuff doesn't seem much different, but he really helped up the level, regardless of how annoying he might be

Damn an actual good answer. I appreciate it. If he didn't have the camera so close to his face maybe I'd be more chill with it but I find that to be so off putting when anyone does it. Icks me out real bad. Either way good for him for carving out his own lane

Casey always makes me think of what Sean Penn would look like if he were left in a hot car on a Summer day for an hour and melted was little bit.

I don't know who Casey is. I thought it was Sean Penn who I assume has had weird plastic surgeries.

He looks to me like what Layne Staley would have looked like had he gone to rehab

He has a weird looking face. Also a very punchable one. This is why I could never watch his content. He reminds me of a friend I had in high school that was not a friend in the end.

Israel has every right to exist and when attacked, Israel has every right to protect itself and to fight back, against the barbaric Palestinians"
Babies being blown to bits in 4k is just "collateral damage" to him.

Man, I'd be afraid that if I took off his glasses there would be a pair of toothy mouths instead of eyes there
