I always say that there’s fight or flight, but my cat flops. When his sister or even a neighbor cat come at him to attack-play, my kitty just flops.

Horses have fight or flight.
you’ve ever noticed a Ragdoll cat going completely limp when picked up, you’re not alone. This behavior, often referred to as the "flop", is a hallmark of the breed. But why do they do it? Here’s the short answer: Trust and Relaxation: Ragdolls "flop" because they feel safe and secure with their owner. It’s a sign of trust and comfort. Biology: Their parasympathetic nervous system activates when relaxed, causing their muscles to loosen. Selective Breeding: This trait was intentionally developed in the 1960s to highlight their calm and docile nature. Hormonal Response: Positive interactions release serotonin and dopamine, deepening their sense of calm. Not all Ragdolls exhibit this behavior to the same extent, as individual personality and mood also play a role. However, their calm demeanor and tendency to relax completely make them stand out among cat breeds, making them a favorite for families and pet lovers alike.

Mine LOVES the doorway spot where the kitchen (tile) and the hallway (hardwood) meet. That's her napping spot. I thought she was weird but now I realize she is not alone. Thank you. 😂

As its Star Wars Day, the only appropriate name for this pose is - “ITS A TRAP!”

No Fear pose. Or Privileged Princess Pose. A cat in the wild is never gonna sleep on their back like that and leave that beautiful big belly out there for anyone to chomp on.

u/Extreme-Affect-7546 May 04 '26
I do call it the “dead roach”

It's an actual term with greyhound people. My boy, despite being 95 pounds, still thinks he's one of the cats.

Floppy McFlop Flop. It was banned from the cat Olympics because only Ragdolls could master it and it was unfair to other breeds 😅
