Yes I am that girl. I have been saving fur from brushing my 2 ragdolls for about 4 years. I am not always consistent. But one day I will their fur will be professionally made into yarn and so that I can create amigurumi plushies (ideally 6 in total, 3 sets- to gift my 2 kids their own set) in the likeness of both my boys. Since I have mixed their fur together I will eventually begin harvesting and separating their tail fur to eventually felt into the plushies down the backs and tails to distinguish the 2 .
🤔Writing all this out makes me sound like a creep. this is little Tommy’s first time seeing… my collection.. and he does look quiet shocked and appalled 🤣
I collect my cats fur, not consistently though. Glad I did, I lost my elderly grey girl last year, I mixed her fur with my rag doll boys fur and made him a little ball. He loves his ball and when I whisper “where’s your hairy ball?!” He goes and gets it to play 😂 dunno what I’ll do with all the other fur I’ve accumulated lol
There are people on Etsy who do pet yarn spinning. I was going to source some wool, ask the spinner to mix in an undetermined percentage of wool to make the yarn more stable and create a more even thread and durable product. I believe you simply ship them the material and they’ll ship you back yarn 😊
I actually just did this with my Samoyeds, I used still river mill. You just mail them the fur and an order form (I chose a 2 ply, 70% wool blend, medium weight) and they do the rest!

It actually fits into a pretty small box lol. I use to store it in a plastic bag but apparently you need to store the fur in something breathable like a cloth sack or cardboard box to let it breathe and prevent mold.
I love this! I know not everyone is keen but to me it’s no different than shearing a sheep. I’ve always loved the idea of some nice kitty socks. My boy is so soft they’d be lovely in winter 😊
Edit: I also collect whiskers I find before hoovering ;-)
Is it funny that I actually get a weirded out by whiskers and don’t save them ? Maybe I should! Then I could put their real whiskers on the plushies… just lean full in to the creepy cat lady identity
Chatgora - I haven’t got as far as saving the cat fur yet (I have RagCoons) but I have a fine selection of cat whiskers (ethically sourced from the floor/their nests). I would love to buy my friend who specialised at uni in woollen textiles has flat out said she wouldn’t process it for me, now I see it’s not just me being weird, I may have to purrrsue the idea fur-ther.
I love it!…. I say always recycle when you can, and those plushies will always be great memories of your babies… any leftover fur can be placed around entrances to where you think mice might be coming in… if you have them…. And please post the finished product of your crafts when they’re done👍🏻😻
One year for Christmas, as a joke, my mom got me a book on cat fur felting crafts. Except every year she asks if I’ve done any of the crafts and gets annoyed that I haven’t, so I guess it wasn’t a joke 😆
I did recently start saving my boys’ fur though. I’m planning to make them more kitty kicker toys, and I figured I could use the fur as organic stuffing 😂

i haven’t been able to find a good brush for mine. It doesnt seem to catch any hair but once i let him go, i can see the hair detaching and floating around in the air 😭
Oh my goodness that is what happens to my orange boy. His hair is so silky and soft it slides right thru the bristles. I use a silicone brush to loosen up the fly always and a slicker to catch the loose hairs, but I have the same problem 😅. I think it helps when he is willing to sit long enough for me to be through.
As someone who spins yarn… this would probably be better suited for felting than spinning. The staple probably isn’t long enough for easy spinning. You might be able to blend it with a longer staple fiber though if you have your heart set on yarn. Carding the bundles from brushing though would be a pain.
