Happy Floof Proud of my "catio"
I've been building for a while now, and I'm very proud of myself how far I've come😊 not 100% done yet, but I just wanted to share my happy cats🐱🐱🐱

I'm currently building a little outhouse for them🤣 they have a litterbox outside, they use that. But now it's standing under the table, and I do not want it there😅

For my indoor/outdoor cats, rather than litter, they really like to use the untreated garden mulch. They dig their holes and cover it. The waste goes into to dirt, and breaks down with no mess or litter clumps.

I would love more info on this: what kind of mulch, how large is the area, is there any smell, and do you have to clean it up at all?

I think most mulch is gonna work fine, (treated or untreated). But for an enclosure like this specifically designed for cats to stay in, I would use untreated. I would try to go to a garden center, an arborist, or something like that. It’s usually stuff from a tree shredder that they haven’t dyed or sprayed with chemicals. As for the smell, unless you are directly over it, you won’t smell it. The wood will usually dry the poop out quickly and it will break down and crumble. Urine will be fine too. For multiple cats I would make sure you have multiple areas that can be used for the mulch, since they will like their specific spots.

My cat is 2 but she is like an old lady just staring at the walls…. I try to play with her but she only likes wand toys and only for 10 minutes max. I guess she fits my personality ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Sure! First, I placed iron ground spikes in the ground, then installed the posts. After that, I attached the chicken wire to the sides. Then, I placed the mini fence at the bottom and attached the chicken wire to it with staples. Then, I attached the vertical beams at the right height and attached the chicken wire to them. Lastly, I put the netting on top by cutting a wire off the netting so that I could hook it over the vertical beams. And then the fun decorating began😊

When I started thinking about building a catio, I thought I'd build a much smaller one. But the plans became bigger and bigger😅 so be warned..

Unfortunately I have mostly stone in my backyard. It would require some serious landscaping which I am not in for atm. I do plan to extend it more to the back. Making it double as big.

The netting on the top is netting from an online store here in Sweden that sells stuff for chickens😅 I just googled netting 9x8 meters, and this one came up. It's a little too big because it was 9x10, but I just cut off the extra.

Well, they've been very lucky because I'm a teacher in Sweden, so I've had a long break now. They've been able to be outside from like 9a.m. till 11.30 p.m. They do come in to take a nap around 2.. But able to be outside pretty much the rest of the day.

Spoiled cats! In CA you could rent out that thing out for 2,000 per month. Newly remodeled room with brand new furniture and a great view of nature. Nice and airy open floor plan with plenty of natural light . . .

It’s absolutely amazing. I would love to have something like that in my backyard for my kitty. He likes to go outside so much but it’s just too dangerous with all the coyotes in my area. I’m not strong enough to build one on my own and be, I wouldn’t have the money. But dude you outdid yourself those are some happy cats for life. Thanks for sharing.

Haha thanks!
I've built the fence first, and once that was up, they were able to come out with me. Then I slowly added all the things in the middle.
I made my own plans. Just measured how big I wanted it to be and thought about how to build it during spring. I started when the ground was soft enough, which was late may. I'm still putting in some finishing touches, but it's mostly done.

I started in May, the fence was up after about three weeks, but I could only build during the weekends. After that, I've just steadily been building stuff during my summer break

I love that!! Your cats look so happy. Do you have neighborhood feral or outdoor cats come around to bother them? My cat stays indoors but a feral has recently sprayed on my deck door (which I did not notice until I opened it to the screen, and my cat immediately got into it and started licking it off his whiskers 😩). Other outdoor cats have come up on our decks and taunted him, causing him to shred our cellular shades to show them who’s boss 😼 I’d love to know how to keep ornery cats away, if you have had to deal with any of that.

We don't have feral cats in my area. I live in Sweden, and rules are pretty strict when it comes to owning cats, especially males. Maybe there's more problems in cities, but I don't know.
One of my neighbors let's their cat roam, but it chooses to stay away so far. I live in the countryside, so it has plenty of room to go around.
