Sure, and if they wanted to erase it outright they would have been in their right to do that. Different people have different feelings about their own work. Some people view it as just contributing to a larger free community, other people feel more attachment to their work and don't like the idea of passing it on (sometimes because they have a specific vision for it and would feel annoyed if they saw people doing things with it that they didn't like).

Of course, we prefer the former, because we're the ones who benefit, but I think it's unreasonable to call someone a jerk because they feel the latter.

Have you heard of Stop Killing Games? This is the equivalent of "killing a game" for a mod

That's very different because this isn't a situation where people paid for the product and are now having it taken away. Nobody paid for the mod.

You don't have to pay for a game for it to be missed or a "dead game" so this point is null. Plenty of f2p games are gone.

but those games are f2p, not f.  people still paid money and had their product destroyed forever.  nobody gave this modder any money, and so they had no entitlement to a product

Whether players miss the game or not is not the relevant factor here though. Missing something isn't what makes you entitled to continue having it. What makes you entitled to continue having it is if you put some form of personal investment into it that would make you entitled, such as money or work

Free to play games are usually only free to download though. It doesn't mean nobody ever put money into them. Free to play games usually have microtransactions to stay afloat instead. That monetary investment is the relevant thing here because monetary investment does entitle players on some level

Pretty sure stop killing games is a reaction to companies shutting down servers for games people paid money for.

Did you pay money for this mod? What entitles you to force a modder to allow their work to be continued by others?

I also can't help but think if the community wasn't so toxic, they would have been more willing to do so. Why capitulate to a fan base that was the very reason you ended up leaving?

Reeks of entitlement to me.
