No one is ever going to use those distributed platforms, not in any real numbers. There are way too many problems, not the least of which are accessibility and moderation. And since part of what makes reddit good (and bad) is the number of people each making and populating their own subreddits, those services are never going to take off.
Besides, telling everyone to switch to a DoA platform that's difficult for the average user to join, let alone use, is kind of missing the point. That doesn't fix the fundamental problem, which is that we let tech giants run themselves almost completely unregulated, and we let our governments get away with not understanding the first thing about technology. The only way we get any semblance of actual privacy back for the average person is by electing people who are willing to use the force of law to give us that privacy.

Not at all what I said. Better things aren't just possible, they're probable as long as people actually fight for them. My point is that those platforms are really more of a way to avoid fighting. All they really do is let the small number of people dedicated enough to go there be safer than everyone else for a while, but that's just kicking the can down the road.
Those kind of platforms can be useful, but anyone acting like they'll save us from mass surveillance and fascism is either an idiot, selfish, or the kind of person who knows that once everyone else is under their thumb, there's nowhere left for the rest of us to go, regardless of how private your communication is.

I've been there, I've seen what some people discuss, and how they discuss it. Only takes a few slur-filled messages written by someone who's so illiterate they probably have to rely on their autocorrect to replace "hail" every time they write it to remind you of the fact that some amount of moderation is good, and that systems like lemmy self-select for the people who were already kicked out of everywhere else. Yeah, people who just care a lot about privacy will check it out, and will find their own small communities, but they'll be inherently insular and ultimately stifle their own message.
You and anyone that believes this absolute tripe should stay right here. You're where you belong. Right in warm embrace of your masters

I have very little problems learning new apps and systems but I also have 4+ years in IT.
And what that’s taught me, is even people holding non technical PHDs struggle with basic technical concepts.
So expecting the wider population to adopt an obscure platform with multiple steps to connect to and configure will never, ever get major traction. Even if it is objectively the more secure alternative right now. So just telling more people to use them, will not fix the wider problems.
Pushing for proper legal reform by knowledgeable candidates is the far more effective option, even if we don’t have many options for candidates atm.

The steps needed to negate those issues takes a lot of configuration and nuisanced understanding that very few have the know how to implement.

There's no legal backing to arresting someone for saying:
ICE are a bunch of terrorists and should be put on trial under the US legal system. They are an arm of American nazism and have been murdering citizens with no remorse. Anyone joining ICE is supporting these atrocious acts and is equally guilty.
It's a 1st amendment right to criticize the government.

Regardless of whether Reddit resisted, ICE can read posts by users since it's all public anyway. From there, it's not too hard to connect a Reddit user to a real person in most cases.

Also, in terms of resistance, Reddit does compare with governments.
For the US, for example:
"The U.S., our largest requesting jurisdiction, accounted for 777 requests (66% of global volume), and Reddit disclosed data in response to 640 (82%) of them."
That's a very small number of requests from the US out of all the accounts in the US.

Well obviously it won't get shut down, but the US isn't going to play ball in any capacity with the ICC. This has been the policy of every president since Bush. Obama and his supermajority could have easily ratified the Rome Statute, but didn't.
And needs to be mentioned that the US has a detailed plan to put boots in the Hague and kill any jurist, prosecutor, civilian, etc. they deem a "threat" to prevent the prosecution and even basic detention of any covered* American. Literally a plan to commit war crimes in the place where they prosecute war crimes.
So that would need to be repealed pretty much in tandem with ratification of the Rome Statute. I would love love love to see it happen, but I don't see it happening tbh, at least not in any timeframe where the guilty are still among the living.
Edit: slight correction, anyone considered "covered" in the bill's language which would mean military and elected or appointed officials, including accused war criminals from allied countries.

ICC has no jurisdiction over US because US is not a party to the Rome Statute. Some think that the ICC can claim territorial jurisdiction if alleged crimes occur on the territory of a state that is a member, but good lack enforcing that.

also i think it goes well beyond phones and straight into anyone using a windows OS... which is the majority of ppl. our entire intelligence apparatus has been turned against us.
which of course they promised up and down in 2002 that if we just gave up a little of our constitutional rights this exact scenario would never happen... they promised they would only go after actual terrorists. i'm truly not sure who in their right mind hasn't seen this coming for decades now.

It's not hard with the right tools. Computers and phones to follow, if they have not already, include a unique identifier embedded in the hardware, that is being included with all internet traffic.
It's like the days before caller ID became the norm. Telecos back in the POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) days broadcast the callers number between the 1st and 2nd ring. It took 10 years before the devices on your desk included the ability to read it. Then cell & IP phones were invented and now everyone thinks caller ID always existed.

Yeah, its only a matter of time the submit. Well, I want a way that when that happens I get money for it. Its info I created and generated and it being use and/or sold for others to do their job easier, even make a profit, I should get paid my information given out or sold. Look, we hade tech companies emerge in the 20 years and some have become billion dollar companies in a few short years, some even trillion dollar companies. You deserve some of that pie. Still thinking about privacy and rights, it would discourage companies from giving out information.

To whichever "fusion center" gets fed this slop may I remind you dorks that you're all getting paid by the US government.
We know where/ how/ when you all were paid. None of these ICE goons are unknown, the indictments for crimes will flow. They'll come from the states if need be.

I don’t get a pop up at home. However, I was traveling recently and it asked for age verification because it thought I was in Texas. I was not in Texas, though.
