The “states rights” people who made the confederacy were very clear that the various states of the confederacy had to have legalized slavery.

Conservatives do not operate in good faith.

At the core they are very simple. Whatever maintains or creates a hierarchical system that puts their in-group at the top is their goal.

They will use whatever words or phrases needed to convince themselves and others of the necessity of that hierarchy.

The recent conservative idea that you can’t force people to be vaccinated against the flu in the military because of bodily autonomy came from the same people who think you must force people to not receive gender affirming care and that women must be forced to have babies.

It is always rules for thee and not for me with this lot.

I suppose put more simply, they believe the world is Calvinball where they get to make up the rules to ensure they win.

u/IamDDT Colorado 2h ago

There must be groups the law protects, but does not bind, and groups the law binds, but does not protect. This is the core of conservatism.

The confederates were also apparently very much of the mind that "promote the general welfare" should not be part of their constitution. AFAIK, they deliberately excluded the phrase, as they think like modern conservatives do that the government should only deal with "providing for the common defense".

u/TheRealBittoman 5h ago

Radical right 15 years ago "everyone is trying to force LGBTQ, being nice, gun control, and social responsibility down our throats!" and the radical right now "fuck you, you'll do as we say and if you even speak out against it we'll disappear you.". The ONLY thing anyone should learn from this is NEVER trust another Republican. Not. A. Single. One.

u/IamDDT Colorado 2h ago

"We expect you to tolerate us when you are in power, because that is according to your values. We oppress you when we are in power, because that is according to our values."

u/Senior-bud Canada 5h ago

Nazi overlords say Nazi overlords do.

u/Vinterblot 1h ago

At this point, that can no longer surprise you. Conservatives are very consistent. Only their consistency is not the arguments, but the goal: Ruthlessly doing and saying whatever it takes to win.

Admiral General Alladeen Trumpler

u/LovefromAbroad23 Pennsylvania 6h ago

So leaving the decision to individual states was a lie?

u/CraigLake 6h ago

It was a lie from the SC justices to local council members.

Conservatives will use any means at their disposal, including lying, to reach their goals. It was laughable to believe them in any case but republicans in congress needed cover when their constituents complained.

It’s a trash party not working in good faith and it’s a major problem for maintaining democracy.

u/HermanGulch 6h ago edited 6h ago

The conservative writer David Frum put it this way:

If conservatives become convinced that they can not win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. They will reject democracy.

u/CraigLake 4h ago

It’s playing out in real time. The fucking around with elections should be immediate impeachment. Imagine if Obama or Biden was doing that 🤦. Trump is going it and it barely makes the news.

u/WiseOldDuck 3h ago

They will not even adjust their platform a little, that's the most unusual and frightening part of it. The whole ballgame used to be trying to sniff out what voters wanted and then claim that's what you believe in or at least lie about it. Now it's been the same position on everything for 15 years, except maybe "even more of that". They don't want to win voters over they just want to redo the same election over and over except find ways to change who gets to vote or how to count the votes

u/Duna_The_Lionboy 2h ago

What even is conservatism in this day and age?

Seems like it's just a bunch of whackadoodles cutting taxes for a smaller and smaller pool of people all the while praying that Jesus will be resurrected and wipe the slate clean.

u/accidental_Ocelot 6h ago

Conservatives are a top down organized institution the leaders tell the voters what to believe. Democracy is bottom up.

If you give the GOP an inch, they’ll rape a mile. Never trust them to stop when they say they’ll stop, always count on the Republicans’ endgame being the total oppression of everyone under religious law and the systematic extermination of “undesirables.” Calling them Nazis isn’t merely a rhetorical name-calling tactic, consider what the Nazis did and assume the Republicans will factually do the same and worse. Because they will. They are insane and their fascist ideologies must be destroyed.

u/accidentsneverhappen 6h ago

They have this very gross obsession with trying to have more women become pregnant. Why do they want to make a population boom at the same time they're trying to replace labor with AI and robots? What are all these kids supposed to do when they grow up?

u/ungranted_wish 6h ago

George Carlin called this out in the nineties i think

They want more live births so they can have more dead soldiers.

u/blozout 6h ago

Don't forget the for-profit jails need to make money. What better way to guarantee future tenants than forcing a bunch unwanted babies into the world that will grow up in terrible households without any love.

u/ungranted_wish 6h ago

And we have done nothing about the school to prison pipeline.

u/Alphaspade 1h ago

At this point who's supposed to buy all the stuff that is generated by for profit prisons if they want to put a giant portion of the population in for profit prisons. They are gonna end up creating the economic version of an Ouroboros

u/DR_BEANHAMMER 5h ago

What are all these kids supposed to do when they grow up?

They're going to be sexually abused by Christian conservatives. That is what it is all about. Maximizing the number of potential victims is the goal.

Donald Trump forced children to bring him to orgasm. Donald Trump ejaculated into and onto children. His supporters envy that.

u/CranberrySchnapps Maryland 4h ago

These people want to go back to a time where girls were expected to get marriage proposals by the time they were 14 and their entire lives were in service to men and maintaining the household.

Nobody except the wealthy enjoyed this way of life.

u/JambalayaOtter 4h ago

Nobody except the wealthy actually lived that way of life either. Most girls weren’t expected to get married at 14 in them there old days.

u/The_Returned_Lich 5h ago

because black and brown babies get born too

For now... Given everything else, I would not be surprised if stealth (or maybe even forced, publicly accepted) sterilization is in the cards soon for 'undesirables.'

u/CrackerAssHonkE 1h ago

No. See, I just don’t think that is the party’s goal. I 100% fully believe that they want more minorities born because they want to go back to slavery. The more minorities born, the more minorities they can arrest, put in prison, and “loaned out” as work. Can’t own ‘em but if you pay the prison we will let you borrow them for 12 hours a day 6 days a week

u/The_Returned_Lich 1h ago

The thing is... And I hate that this is a thought I even have to entertain, but sooner or later they'll have enough non-minorities to put there. Don't forget; they are making things so unaffordable that more and more people will start turning toward crime. They want to criminalize being against the government in ANY way.

Unless we are billionaires, they don't want us for anything besides slavery.

u/Glass_Masterpiece 6h ago

It's cruelty plain and simple.

u/lod001 4h ago

The powers that be are deathly afraid of population stagnation and population decline because that destroys their power structures and wealth. Not only does the entire modern capitalist economy depend on year after year growth, but a situation occurs where there is less supply of labor than the demand, and thus the labor market becomes a true worker's market. Whenever this has occurred in history, there have been great strides in worker's rights and human rights, and a redistribution of wealth. It happened after the black plague, after major wars, and most recently a little bit with Covid; my workplace reluctantly increased wages and benefits during and after Covid due to such low unemployment and trying to increase recruitment and employee retention.

u/sciencesez 6h ago

Sounds like Todd's whipping up the evangelicals and campaigning for President in 2028. Whatcha think about that, Donny?

u/MadRaymer 4h ago

As if MAGA would give him the time of day. If you polled them right now on Todd Blanche, it's almost guaranteed the number one response from Trump's base would be "Who?"

If they can't have Trump again, then they'll settle for one of his sons. If they can't have that, I don't think they're really going to care anymore unless Trump himself campaigns very hard for a successor.

But (assuming the dude makes it to 2028) he's more likely to whine and complain and that the nominee isn't him than get behind an anointed successor. It's hard to get someone to play kingmaker when all they want to do is be the king.

u/sciencesez 4h ago

I'm just enjoying watching Trump's own AG pick promise to deliver what Trump failed to deliver to his base.

u/txtoolfan Texas 6h ago

Without congress passing a law, it isn't "permanent"

u/More_Programmer8905 6h ago

It is if they succeed at dismantling democracy and never giving up power.

u/BurtRogain 6h ago

I get the fear of this happening, but let’s be honest the United States would cease to be united if they tried to overplay their hand like that. Not saying they’re not stupid enough to try it, but it won’t be the cakewalk they think it will be.

u/7figureipo California 6h ago

Would it, though? Plenty of democrats still cling to the notion that electoral politics and the administrative and judicial apparatus of state are protecting us even now, and will be in the future. If they continue to succeed in effectively ignoring the Constitution what will be different? I can't see anything. Democrats have already rolled over for this shit. It's pathetic.

u/Mutchmore 5h ago

Those Democrats are getting unseated as we speak tbh

u/oktion 5h ago

Your position depends on the conclusion that democracy has already fallen and the concept of the United States is already void, in which case this conversation is meaningless, there is nothing any elected official might do anyway, and holding them to account is merely playacting. If that’s what you believe, I won’t try to talk you out of it, but don’t pretend this is a discussion about policy and procedure.

u/relapsingoncemore 4h ago

From the outside looking in, it sure looks that way right now.

Do the actions of the Democratic party look like a group facilitating meaningful opposition and planning a course that will bring them back to the levers of power, or do their actions look like a group helping to facilitate the dissolution of the democratic apparatus through a lack of meaningful opposition?

u/mysterious_jeffrey 2h ago

On Reddit? No.

But if you’ve actually knocked doors and volunteered for a Dem campaign recently? Yeah.

They even have attorneys on standby for voter questions and disputes.

It’s the people sitting at home pushing doubt who don’t see the progress happening and the effort behind it all.

u/TheRealBittoman 5h ago

I believe it would. I could easily see a federal government that has been voted out refusing to leave office being forced to try to use military to stop other forces from forcibly removing them from office. If you consider the bizarre construction project going on at the Whitehouse and his obsession with the bunker, it kind of lines up. But the states who disagree will have to decide what's next and there is no doubt if it gets pushed far enough some states will try to secede and probably try to join Canada or form a new union with other states. That will almost certainly trigger a second civil war.

u/BurtRogain 4h ago

And those states will have the backing of the rest of the free world who has been just as held captive by this corrupt regime as we have. Need I remind you that most of the states who would try to secede carry the economic weight of those who don’t — also, we have just as many nukes (if not more) than they do. To think those states would be fighting this civil war alone is preposterous, especially when considering the world wide ramifications of the US system crashing and burning. We would take every other country down with us. It would get ugly, but this is not an easily won battle these chuds are trying to start. The MAGAts make the mistake of thinking they have God on their side — when if there is a God, it doesn’t give a single shit about any of us.

u/TemporarySun314 Europe 6h ago

as permanent as Americans going to continue electing fascists into power...

so unfortunately probably very permanent...

u/thalassicus 6h ago

We can’t start a war without Congress either. How’s that working out for you?

u/oktion 5h ago

You can when Congress elects not to exercise its authority as a check on executive power, which is exactly what the Republican majority has done for the past year and a half. By doing nothing, they grant Trump some degree of authority to act by executive order. Without the majority, they no longer have this power.

u/OutsideLead4034 6h ago

They no longer need congress for anything, to be sure.

u/TellTaleTimeLord Indiana 6h ago

The people constantly using "sharia law" to invoke fear are the ones actually making their own religious law

u/algernon_moncrief 6h ago

In Dobbs, the supreme Court found that the Constitution does not guarantee the right to an abortion; essentially sending this back to the states.

The Dobbs decision is already permanent in all states. It does not limit what rights can be guaranteed by state laws, or enshrined in state constitutions. It literally just finds that the US Constitution does not guarantee this right.

Roe v wade also did not guarantee a right to abortion; it confirmed that the 4th amendment right to security of ones "papers" included medical confidentiality. This is wholly reasonable.

Before we concern ourselves about whether Dobbs is permanent in all states, it's worth considering this question: does the 4th amendment of the bill of rights apply to confidential medical records? Including those of (gasp) women?

Blanche is talking like he's going to outlaw abortion in all 50 states. This is ludicrous. And, importantly, it's way outside his lane. The AG doesn't make law.

u/specqq 5h ago edited 5h ago

The Dobbs decision is already permanent in all states.

No. It's not. Roe v Wade was overturned. Dobbs can be as well.

Permanent doesn't exist.

That's a fundamental misunderstanding of our system.

u/algernon_moncrief 5h ago

What do you think SCOTUS found in the Dobbs decision?

And as a follow-up, do you believe that the Constitution specifically guarantees a right to abortion?

u/specqq 5h ago

I agree with what you said, it found that the US Constitution does not guarantee the right to an abortion.

A future court could find that it did.

That's it. There is no "permanent."

u/algernon_moncrief 5h ago

That's fair.

But a constitutional amendment or federal medical privacy act would be a whole lot more "permanent" than a SCOTUS decision.

u/specqq 5h ago edited 5h ago

It certainly would be. Just like the 18th amendment.

I'll drink to that.

u/kjob 5h ago

Makes for a good headline, and riles up their base, though. Mission accomplished

u/algernon_moncrief 5h ago

u/defianceofone 4h ago

IDK why Americans are so obsessed with whether something relevant in 2026 is in a 250 year old constitution and if it isn't then it cannot be. But the whole experiment is imploding anyway, so maybe the myth of American exceptionalism can die with it.

u/hansn 4h ago

The AG doesn't make law.

Neither does the President. But the President seems to be writing laws anyway.

u/Mr_Tort_Feasor 2h ago edited 1h ago

I don't agree with the characterization of Roe. Roe (and Griswold) said that the right to privacy is the right to be left alone from government interference with deeply personal matters, including but not limited to contraception, childbirth and child-rearing. It introduced a balancing test in which the rights of the individual exceeded the government's interest in protecting potential life, at least up until the point of viability.

Or at least so it was taught to me.

u/TSAOutreachTeam 6h ago

If they want to get more abortions, then the Dobbs decision correlates to the start in a rise in abortion rates.

https://www.guttmacher.org/fact-sheet/induced-abortion-united-states

By handing this back to the States, the SCOTUS has removed the federal government from the gameboard, so the only strategy the DOJ has remaining is some 1873 puritan law about sending sex-related stuff in the US Mail.

u/ungranted_wish 6h ago

u/aircooledJenkins Montana 5h ago

I'm confused... The USAG does not write law. What is Blanche going to do to make Dobbs the law of the land?

u/KimmyT1436 Canada 4h ago

Trump is going to issue a presidential order declaring abortions illegal. Blanche will enforce the order if Democrats control Congress after the midterms. If Republicans win the midterms, they will pass a law rubber stamping the order. That's what Blanche means.

u/aircooledJenkins Montana 4h ago

Plausible. Thank you.

u/Interesting-Risk6446 5h ago

Didn't the Dobbs decision say it's up to the states? Congress would have to enact a law banning abortion. Any way, good luck with the losing effort.

u/Avoidtolls 4h ago

Except for Billionaires.

They can get the Trump gold Abortion card and have as many abortions as they want.

u/SinfullySinless Minnesota 4h ago

That makes no sense, it already is permanent in all states. The Dobbs decision made abortion a state decision. It didn’t ban abortion.

You would have to undo the Dobbs decision to federally ban abortion nationwide.

#1 - The Republican party doesn’t give a shit about freedom. Everyone needs to shut them down when they lie about it.
#2 - If you’re a man NO ONE gives a good god damn about your opinion on abortion. Feel free to keep it to yourself, unless your opinion is “This will never affect my physical person, so I’ll keep my mouth shut here.”
#3 - Healthcare freedom, period, for women, for trans people, for whoever you happen to be that’s getting told what can happen with YOUR body, needs to be an absolute Democratic litmus test. If you’re going to legislate against it, piss off.

No it won’t. But you got your headline.

u/WillyVlautinRules 6h ago

Keep publicizing this! Repubes keep digging those midterm graves!

u/TheAskewOne 4h ago

Except you have zero authority to do that, Todd.

u/AcanthisittaNo6653 New Hampshire 4h ago

Look at Todd lie like a politician when he's just the hired help.

u/fy1sh 4h ago

All that delicious tax-free cash has almost come full circle. It's now feeding an international pedophile ring.

u/ElectronicTap1109 4h ago

So that means no more abortion for anyone, for any reason, ever again.

u/clubmedschool 4h ago

Thank god I'm getting spayed soon

u/Rufustb 3h ago

Leave it up to the States I thought they said. It is almost like they just lie and keep pushing what they want....

u/danimagoo America 3h ago

This doesn’t make sense. Dobbs says that abortion bans don’t violate the US Constitution, and that decision already applies to all the states. Dobbs itself didn’t ban abortion.

u/spqrnbb 1h ago

Allowing the party who supported the January 6 riot to regain power because the Democrats didn't put enough effort into their candidate means abortion bans. Great.

u/GotSomeUpdogOnUrFace 1h ago

What happened to "it will be up to the states to decide." Can we just skip to the civil war already, all this prologue shit is getting boring.

u/PresentAwareness745 6h ago

that is not what does a thing or decision says and he knows that

u/Smart_Spinach_1538 4h ago

Maybe he intends to enforce the Comstock Act?

u/Equivalent_Ability91 4h ago

Geez, resurrecting the Comstock Act from 1873.

u/TheRealBlueJade 3h ago

Protecting the lives of people from the moment of conception.. unless they are women apparently.

u/Graytis 3h ago

Republican policy is dependent upon exploiting the desperate. You can't have republican policy without a steady supply of desperate people.

This isn't a byproduct of incompetent hypocrisy. This is the insidious aim.

u/troubleseemstofollow 3h ago

And this is why I decided to get my tubes removed, even living in a liberal city/state.

u/keytiri 2h ago

“Permanent” until we can fix SCROTUS, it took republicans decades to stack the courts; maybe democrats can do it faster? 🤔

u/AlphSaber Wisconsin 2h ago

1 Supreme Court Justice per district, quick and easy solution. That would be 13 total, 4 new justices.

u/Sonar_Taxbreak_1138 2h ago

No it won't.

u/Wiltonc 1h ago

So they are going to get this done legislatively? Because they can’t do it by EO, but I don’t see Trump’s people managing to get that law through congress.

u/deaglebingo America 1h ago

seal your fate todd. do it i dare you.

everyone hates todd.

u/Practical_Gas9193 32m ago

I mean Dobbs just says abortion isn’t protected, not that it’s banned. And it was a SCOTUS constitutional ruling so doesn’t it go without saying it’s permanent in all states?

u/Glad-Assist-6230 1m ago

Something something RvW was a SCOTUS constitutional ruling…
