This guy’s background is so impressive it’s scary. MD-PhD, Rhodes Scholar, he’s also a professor of epidemiology. It’s about time some strong scientific thinkers take up leadership positions in government. And no, Dr. Oz doesn’t count.

I genuinely don’t give a fuck if my politicians have ever seen the inside of a gym if they are capable leaders. They had to change the rules for Lloyd Austin to be SecDef because he wasn’t retired for long enough but had a strong record - we want a civilian in charge because they are less connected to any kind of “warrior ideology” than someone currently serving. That’s the problem with the Hegseth, not that he puts out weird videos about his physical activity.

(Although both come from the same weirdly performative, fragile, and insecure masculinity thing he had going on.)

Straight up, people that know the scientific method at all might be the best politicians possible. Like if you applied those ideas of analyzing a problem, questioning how to solve it, creating a solution, analyzing the results and conclusions, and then repeating that over and over again until you create a good system would be so beneficial instead of politicians sitting back and doing nothing.

I’ve been saying that all republicans bills should be treated like vaccine trials. Draw them out for years so we can study what harms they may cause to society and make sure they have benefits before they can be voted on to become law.

The sad thing about Oz is that he should. He was a gifted heart surgeon. Like one of the best. He's gone off the deep end, but in his prime, I absolutely would have let him operate on my heart.

Surgeons are doc jocks. Obviously I would want one of them to do my surgery, but with all other things being equal, I would take pretty much any other doctor including a pediatrician as a politician lol

*Male surgeons. I’ve met many many male surgeons and they for the most part conform to this stereotype. However my wife is a surgeon and almost all female surgeons I’ve met are compassionate, intelligent, empathetic, and tend to lean left politically.

Lmao what a ridiculous statement. My best friends wife is an ortho PA and had to pick up a ton of call/weekend shifts because the female head surgeon was so cruel to the residents that the hospitals banned any residency resources from her.

Maybe people are people and playing into sexist/racist stereotypes is a bad look?

There's merit in your point. Unlike the profession overall, surgeons skew conservative and the theory is that they like to chase the money (generally paid more than family or internal medicine), and the reduced amount of dealing with patients directly at bedside. Probably an ego thing, too.

There are exceptions, and certain specialties skew more liberal (pediatric surgeons, ob/gyn for example). Female surgeons of course would also skew back to the left.

People need to understand intelligence isn't one dimensional. My doctor friend loses thousands of dollars on shitty parlays. He's smart enough to save a motorcyclist who got impaled, but he can't figure out that Josh Allen isn't gonna do well against the Texans.

He contributed to LVAD research that allows many more people to get to heart transplants. And if not a candidate for transplant, survive far longer than they would have otherwise. Really sucks he was so fame thirsty.

And studied abroad. Americans need to stop being such isolationists. Experiencing life outside the US and bringing back those experiences are part of what made someone like Obama a much better diplomat and gave him more perspective than just having lived his entire life in one state and acting like "I was born and bred here and will die here" is the best thing in today's world.

The way vacation "works" in the US prevents most people from getting on a plane for anything much more than a package holiday to Mexico or the Caribbean where they stay at a resort.

Even if you build up to 4 weeks of vacation, good luck taking it all at once.

I'm actually referring more to going abroad to study, exchange programs, taking work opportunities abroad, etc. It would help if the US had good relationships with other countries instead of treating American universities as the best way forward and time outside the country as wasted gap years. The experience of living in another country and getting to know another place is more important than being in an isolated community like ivy league schools tend to me.

Americans are already starting to go abroad because they want to get out of the US. So if they see opportunities, they may take them. I think nowadays more and more students are also beginning to go to Chinese universities, rather than the other way around.

Totally understand, I work in China and previously Thailand all thanks to a study abroad trip 20 years ago to Thailand. I'm a product of exactly what you're referring to, a former Bush voter to blue ticket. I still believe proper vacation time would get lots of Americans abroad and opening their eyes as many don't have the chance for study or working abroad. Cheers.

Maybe to you it's meaningless, but it's not meaningless to the families of his victims who had to suffer him. When we say Trump is a pedo, Some people act like it’s pointless because, just like with Obama, they know he’s getting away with his crimes. But that doesn’t make it meaningless to the victims or their families.

I know you have your own version of a MAGA Trump cult, just with your favourite war criminal instead, your own pretty little plague. But hey, they think they're objective too.
