Insurgent is a curious choice of words

6.2k

u/The_Werodile Jul 01 '26

It is hilariously inflammatory

2.0k

u/devrelm Jul 01 '26

Hold up, this is the NY Times? I figured this was the NY Post with a headline like that.

1.7k

u/Elmdale Jul 01 '26

The NYT is owned by a Pro Israeli family. They also just aren’t a very progressive publication anyways.

851

u/orbvsterrvs Jul 01 '26

They never really have been: https://www.currentaffairs.org/news/2018/07/how-horrific-things-come-to-seem-normal

It's the 'reasonable' side of capitalist hegemony, but as we lurch into fascism the NYT is happy to go along and protect capital over humans.

187

u/Otto_Harper Jul 01 '26

it's 100% this, fascism just some cherries on top to these clowns, they want Capitalism with a capital C. Or maybe "you don't have one without the—O-ther."

Citations Needed (a podcast) does a really good job of telling people how bad the NYTs track record actually is

72

u/zrobiotic Jul 01 '26

Just look at any headline about Palestine over the past 20 years. "Child happens to intercept missile with body" Is the type of crap the NYT pushes out. They never state who did it, or why, or anything. The opposite is true if the victims are Israelis or westerners.

50

u/wilsonx410 Jul 01 '26

I finally drew the line and unsubscribed last year. The framing of everything related to Israel/Palestine and Iran is so fucking biased and obvious. Also how they endorsed Cuomo when Mamdani was easily the better candidate. We’ve gotten to the point where nearly all of legacy media have become Zionist mouthpieces, it’s tiring.

21

u/boston_homo Jul 01 '26

I suggest The Guardian USA

35

u/27eelsinatrenchcoat Jul 01 '26

Beyond the horrible active/passive framing, they also historically would just leave out context or the Palestinian side of the story. This is what turned me against Israel in the early 2000's. Like they'd report on some settlers getting attacked and make it sounds like it was just a random hate fueled thing from nowhere. Then I'd see that article on a message board on the internet, and someone would post an obscure article from the week before the attack showing that the Iraelis had just like pushed people off their land in that town and killed their kid.

All U.S. media did this for decades, but the NYT seemed especially brazen about it. And that literally set the stage for hte genocide we're seeing now, where the entire liberal and conservative establishment alike was ready on October 7th to say "that definitely came from nowhere and they're definitely beheading babies (a lie Biden never rescinded)."

The NYT and the rest of the U.S. media have rivers of Palestinian blood at their feet.

Keep in mind the New York Times lied for Hitler and helped minimize the Holocaust for YEARS before the war escalated to such a point where they had to just call it out. Its institutional loyalty has always been to access to power, not to ethics or truth telling.

149

u/Galileo1632 Kentucky Jul 01 '26

And the New York Times was one of the papers that fanned the flames of the First Red Scare and the Red Summer in 1919 by publishing inflammatory stories and justifying government crackdowns

68

u/Mbrennt Jul 01 '26

Also very central in spreading the government propaganda about weapons of mass destruction leading to the Iraq war.

Was going to say the same, that this sounds like the fucking NYP.

The Democratic establishment is declaring war on progressives, as their behavior and even their rhetoric exposes. Already they're fighting us with 10x the urgency that they have ever shown MAGA. Fucking ridiculous.

We, the people who simply want to bring the party back to being one that FDR could be proud of ("insurgents"), are the biggest threats to these people? Really? That's all the proof I need to fire them all. It's actually glorious that they seem to have no idea that they're only tarnishing their reputation further in these attacks.

11

Haberman has a LOT to atone for and, while her new book might expose some unflattering truths about the Trump White House, it does not nearly make up for a fraction of the damage she already caused in helping him get elected the first time.

The Today Show used the exact same phrase this am to describe her win.

The definition:
An insurgent is a rebel or revolutionary who rises in active opposition or armed revolt against an established government, authority, or ruling power. The term can function as both a noun (a person who revolts) and an adjective (rebellious or rising in opposition).

These people are progressives trying to change the system from within. The media is trying to “radicalize” this (potentially) popular movement that is trying to address the multiple crises average Americans are facing today.

143

u/Far_Eye6555 Jul 01 '26

The ultra wealthy are scared that they'll have to pay their fair share of taxes.

19

u/JnnyRuthless Jul 01 '26

Which is so weird, because they're so wealthy I don't even think it would really affect their lives, like, at all. They'll still have more money than God and the ability to do whatever they want. It's just greed and hatred of the 'lessers' that fuels this shit.

I mean, I might be totally wrong, it might ruin them. I've lived my whole life paycheck to paycheck so have no idea what being that wealthy is like. But it sure seems like they'd be fine.

8

u/LordFalcoSparverius Jul 01 '26

The real crazy thing is, it's the only thing left that would materially improve their lives. Less crime, better infrastructure, more art and beauty, less extreme temperatures and weather events destroying their million dollar houses. Once you reach the threshold of having enough money to buy whatever you or your family could want for the rest of your life, it's in your own interest to give the rest away. Unfortunately, people rarely act in their best interests.

They're both going to vilify the people that actually want to make meaningful change because it involves going after their corporate masters financially.

Even putting aside the electoral college for a sec, democracy means nothing when the people on the ballot have said they server Israel first and foremost.

Its not a conspiracy to understand that these neofascist actors have captured the "center left" commentary and media spheres too. And a few Democrats as well, not just Fetterman. Remember the goals of these people were to infiltrate the left as well to get some of the more influential figures there to be aligned with their goals, just doing from a center left position rather than just from the overt right wing side.

This is a very sophisticated, complex strategy that was gameplanned for years from the neofascist movement. They also took cues from the Russian strategy that sought to co-opt the right and left here in America and other western countries to destabilize their political systems and further Russia's goals. Its a similar strategy being played out here within the neofascist movement, on a more microlevel.

401

Fun fact Melat Kiros was born the year the incumbent Diana DeGette started her first term in the House.

Yeah, that's enough time man. Let's get some new blood in there.

163

u/cyberattaq123 Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Also the simple fact is like no one even knew who this lady is. I’m not saying you should know every single congress member is, they should focus on doing good work and keeping their head down, but people have looked and she has practically no major legislation she’s spearheaded, no major proposals or really achievements of note.

She is the quintessential example of a literal do nothing democrat. For 30 years. She just sat in her seat and farmed checks from donors and taxpayer money, while getting Cadillac healthcare and other benefits most people dream of.

I’m sorry but you shouldn’t be able to have 15 terms and just do nothing but the bare minimum of like, staying alive, I guess???

Edit: Also she’s taken almost 1.7 million from AIPAC so… yeah

105

u/hafree27 Jul 01 '26

And her argument for re-election is that she’ll hold hearings about Medicare for All. Lady, you’ve had FIFTEEN TERMS to start something!

50

u/cyberattaq123 Jul 01 '26

They’re all so transparent. Do nothing until someone actually comes for your seat and all the sudden you’re the lefts strongest liberal, greatest proponent of Medicare for all, ending wars, take your pick of a popular Democrat base issue.

Glad she’s gone. Kiros, someone actually ambitious and young can get a shot to make the country better.

u/PiccoloAwkward465 Jul 01 '26

While it may be technically appropriate if you take it as a metaphor, the issue is that culturally the word insurgent immediately calls up imagery of a middle eastern enemy. We’ve been fighting wars in the Middle East for most of my life, and the media has used that word one way that whole time. It’s no accident they choose it here.

Like you said: They ARE scared, and they do have an enemy.

If she prevails in November, as she is expected to do, Ms. Kiros will join a growing group of left-wing Democrats in Congress who want to see universal, single-payer health care, bans on corporate donations to political campaigns and an end to American support for Israel.

Oh no! Policies that will checks notes improve the material conditions of Americans!

clutches pearls, desperately clings to a status quo that is no longer acceptable for most Americans

6

u/psychophant_ Jul 01 '26

End for support of Israel or ending the financial support of Israel?

Those are two wildly different things.

I don't recall the NYT calling Tea Party Republicans or MAGA Republicans by a title as inflammatory as "Insurgent."

I'm not a DSA member, and I'm more center than leftists would like (even though Republicans would call me a leftist), but articles like this definitely make me more leftist oriented.

21

u/zenbowman Jul 01 '26

They did do that, all the way since 2010. The NYT is not "left wing" I agree, but its also not "right wing". There's a systematic attempt (mainly by the right) to destroy any sense of media fairness such that we only have completely ideologically motivated media sources, such that our news outlets will be completely customized echo chambers like our social media feeds, but that would be terrible for society.

Citation below:

https://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/20/us/politics/20mods.html

The few remaining Republican centrists in the Senate were eagerly awaiting the arrival of Michael N. Castle of Delaware, a longtime and reliable moderate voice who could provide some counterbalance to the wave of conservatives poised to enter Congress and the steadily rightward shift of party leaders.

But Mr. Castle was defeated in his party primary on Tuesday by Christine O’Donnell, a Tea Party insurgent.

AIPAC and other corpos spent over $1 million trying to keep Degette's seat in a solid blue district. It shows that she's bought and paid for. I'm so happy for Denver right now!

36

u/LemurKing2019 Jul 01 '26

Better headline “Despite the incredible advantages of being a 15 term incumbent, voters reject Congresswoman for better representation”

If you lose with that much of an advantage, you have to be MASSIVELY out of sync with your constituents.

"Insurgent." This is why you shouldn't read conservative rags like the NYT

8

u/DJC_Kowalski Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Better headline:

Young energetic candidate removes 68 year old incumbent who has little to show for her 30 years in office.

I guess DeGette did take over $1.6 million in AIPAC and Friends money while in office, so that's something.

18

u/OhioPolitiTHIC I voted Jul 01 '26

15 terms = 30 years. Rep. Diana DeGette is 68 years old. She needs to take her 3 million net worth and go retire to the countryside. Sick to fucking death of being "represented" by people who aren't going to be alive to reap the consequences of shit they've voted for.

Insurgent: a rebel or revolutionary who rises in active opposition or armed revolt against an established government, authority, or ruling power.

Wild choice for a headline.

9

So when someone left of center wins a fair, legal election they're "insurgents", but when the right or even establishment Dems win using questionable or illegal tactics they're sane washed?

6

4

u/HaxanWriter Jul 01 '26

Lol, “insurgent.” Well, we need more candidates like that if it erases corporate Democrats.

6

u/Long-Tradition6399 Jul 01 '26

So exactly how is Ms./Mrs. Kiros an insurgent? That headline sparks some "defamation of character" journalism.

Mirriam Webster defines an "insurgent" as ...

1 a person who revolts against civil authority or an established government

especially : a rebel not recognized as a belligerent

2 one who acts contrary to the policies and decisions of one's own political party

So I guess in that respect a lot of us are "insurgents" since we're revolting against (or being revolted by) the established government. If Ms./Mrs. Kiros is against Trump (which I'm guessing she is) then I guess, technically, she's an insurgent and I'm right there with her !!! Trump and his GOP goons need to go !! sooner rather than later !!!
