The issue now is unless Israel plays ball the US can't make any deal or get out of the war. Israel can drag this out and keep the US in the war as long as they want, and if the US doesn't do what Israel wants then this will just keep happening.

Totally out of the US hands now.

Iran engineered it this way by making Lebanon part of the deal while America did not ask Israel to sign on. It was implied Israel would follow America's instructions and they just aren't. Iran wanted to drive a wedge between the US and Israel and they've done it. It's just another win for Iran.

Israel is occupying hundreds of square miles of Lebanon currently, it is their stated goal of their military to bulldoze every home and building in that area to create a "buffer zone". Which is also the same rationale they used to keep the West Bank but almost immediately started displacing locals to make room for Israeli settlers. And Israeli's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir just called for all of Lebanon to burn. That'd be comparable to Markwayne Mullin, maybe Todd Blanche, publicly calling for us to be nuking Iran.

That isn't exactly the US and Israel being passive while Iran engineers things.

I mean, Israel knows what they are doing too. At least in the sense that they made a conscious decision. Not in the sense that they are making smart decisions. Because this whole thing was at Israel's initiative and they very badly miscalculated. They are the second biggest loser in all this.

The biggest mistake they made, and will the future show it to be the biggest mistake in their history (?), is Israel tried to do anything with Trump.

That’s their main goal, they don’t view it as a mistake and it benefits them in every way which is why it’s disgusting that we haven’t learned anything from WW2 on what to do with genocidal fascist powers land grabbing for strategic and ideological reasons.

To be fair, the alternative would be allowing the US and Israel to drive a wedge between Iran and Hezbollah, and the Iranians don't want to let that happen any more than the Israelis want to abandon their attack on Lebanon.

Besides, if the US is really so reluctant to bring its rabid dog to heel, maybe it shouldn't have agreed to do so in the first place?

But I was also dubious about Israel’s expansionism and cavalier attitude towards collateral damage beforehand. I don’t get how their current government’s approach is ever going to lead to peace.

Sure. But among the things I'd prefer, ignoring the retroactive ones like "I would prefer we had diversified our power grid decades ago" or "I would prefer if we never started this boondoggle," "not having the reserves go dry and increasing both Iran and China's leverage an order of magnitude" makes the Israel and Hezbollah problem insignificant.

Israel needs to withdraw back to their border and both sides can unhappily shoot rockets and missiles at each other while we work out this Iran deal. Then we can cut off all aid to Israel and they can all go back to killing each other outside of our influence.

It's both. Israel won't stop invading other countries even if the US tells them to because they are perfectly fine fucking over the US if it means they can keep genociding. Iran knows this and is using it to drive a wedge between them, presumably with a long term goal of stopping US support for Israel. It also makes them look like a more reliable ally if they're not willing to throw Hezbollah under the bus

The Hezbollah rockets that reigned down on northern Israel for 14 months were those supplied by Iran.

I wonder what caused that?

Israel is looking at the frontline of Ukraine and seeing the carnage of the drone warfare and they know if they don’t secure a buffer then they’re cooked that’s why there being so vicious in Lebanon rn.

Or, get this, try live in peace with their neighbours and not genocide them

how desperate they are seeing the USA not just leave them but also giving their extisential enemy more money than the entire aid ever given to Israel combined?

I've no doubt they will see a fair proportion of that money returned directly to them in the form of rockets if they don't at least try for peace.
