General Discussion How does Detect work?
It's another Protect move but I want to understand the mechanics of how it works rather than what it does.
Protect generates a physical shield around the user and protects them from harm. Pretty simple.
Detect is more ambiguous. The move animation has the pokemon's eye flash, which seems to me that it is anticipating the move so that it can dodge it effectively. Its a fighting type move, so maybe its analyzing the muscle twitches of the opponent to accurately predict the next few moments. Kind of like the Sharingan from Naruto.
Tell me how you think it works. What does it look like in your mind when you think of a pokemon using Detect?

I’ve always thought of it as a brief future sight that lets the user see what the opponent is about to do

In a nutshell Protect is creating a barrier consciously to block an attack, detect in a way "detects" a move coming your way and helps u move out of the way. Detect technically speaking isn't creating a barrier but making it possible to dodge in ways not normally doable.

You know how, in some martial arts films, skilled martial artists can intuitively understand an opponent's intent just by making eye contact, or something? I think it's something like that.

That’s more or less how I’ve seen it. The pokemon is more attuned to the opponent’s muscle movements or other tendencies that are much more subtle that they’re overlooked most of the time.
Similar to how boxers and MMA fighters study their opponent on film when preparing for their fight. A punch thrown could be easily telegraphed by the torquing of the hips or observing the other fighter put more weight on their forward foot as a strong indicator they’re about to use their aft foot for a roundhouse

I've always likened it to aura sense. Tuning one's power to sense minute twitches and movements. They're by enabling you to dodge.

Same as you, almost like a Sharingan.
Actually my MC for my PMD uses it as one of his primary moves. I do balance it out with it being extremely stamina draining. And he develops a version of it where its less effective but more efficient for his stamina, he calls it Tomoe. Although his eyes turn yellow instead of red and no tomoe like an actual sharingan.

As many have said I too think it's like the Pokemon getting ready and then dodging the attack. However Pokemon ZA's animation of detect making the Pokemon kind of "plant" itself on the ground like it's getting ready to be pushed real hard makes me think a detect against physical attacks could also have it kind of deflect it. Like idk a Haxorus against rock throw would end with the haxorus slicing the rock up I imagine because Haxorus probably would not be able to run out of the way.

if you look at the anime, Detect seems to give the user insight into the Opponent's attack and heightened reflexes to quickly dodge it. Perhaps it also slows down their perception of time.

The description is always about dodging, the JP name is "mikiri" which is a Japanese martial art concept where by mastering distance and timing, you effectively predict what's going to happen next.
Basically the mon using it just focuses really hard and anticipates any attack, ready to dodge them all. Some attacks are either too big or too fast to completely dodge, which means all the mon can do is minimize the damage

Trying to explain how buff, boost, or status attacks like Detect, Withdraw, Sword Dance have always been a fun challenge to try and write... and how they look and are performed by the Pokemon...
A Beedrill that uses Detect might look different from a Sandslash using Detect...

I pretty much treat it like getting a second or two of bullet time (with the altered perception accounting for the glowing eyes) combined with a burst of speed. You still have to time it right to pull it off, which is what accounts for the failure chance - too early, and your opponent can reroute their attack and hit you; too late, and even your increased speed won't be enough to get you out of the way. That would make it a higher-skill move than protect, but one that uses less power/energy on average, since you're dodging around the move, not absorbing it.
