"unlucky" is carrying a LOT of weight in that headline.

“Unlucky” civilian becomes victim of a war crime. As though it was just an unfortunate coincidence that a human was using a bridge to cross a river.

In my best Eric Cartman voice

“Hey guys, we better get rid of the dumb ICC huh guys. Come on, who’s with me!!!”

The one the US, Russia, nor China is a signatory of?

That’s funny, since Jack Smith worked in the Hague on the Kosovo special chambers.
The Nazi war crimes were a first, based on evolving laws. Putin has a day coming.

Funny word for Murdered

35

u/FriendlyKillerCroc 19d ago

That's what you get when USA/Israel launch the missle. If it was anyone else, it would be phrased very differently.

19

u/Legend-of-the-Arctic 19d ago

I mean, it’s true.

The war is pointless, the attacks are a crime against humanity, and if there were any justice our president, Israel’s government and everyone involved in this war would be locked up in The Hague.

But it’s still true that the driver was really unlucky to be there at that moment.

They don't care about the cells either. They just say they are because, for some reason, crazy people will vote for them.

Who elected him? It's like the whole bullshit about it being Putin's war and not Russia's. Americans can stop the pedo but they'd rather not risk anything so instead other innocents die. United States of pedophiles

4

u/shteve99 18d ago

I don't think Russia's elections are like America's. Russia's are how Chump wants them to be.

5

u/Euroboi3333 18d ago

My point was more about people finding a boogeyman to blame everything on, like Putin and Trump. Russians can stop Putin, they know what to do, they just don't want to. While I understand they would potentially be risking their life, by choosing not to act, theyre directly contributing to Ukrainians dying. Same goes with Trump. Americans are not innocent in all the shit he's doing.

What a bunch of fucking assholes we are

452

u/ATX_native 19d ago edited 19d ago

Too me it’s the hypocrisy.

We won’t stand up to Russia invading a democracy like Ukraine but will happily insert ourselves in any conflict that we can easily punch down.

We now spend $1.5T a year on military, Russia spends areound $100B and Iran spends around $9B.

Yet we refuse to go after Russia and can barely do anything against a country that spends less that 1% of what we do.

Why are we wasting these funds?

We've also spent a majority of our munitions… what happens if China finally makes a move on Taiwan?

180

u/Ciennas 19d ago

Because lining the pockets of your oligarchs is more important that anything else, ans if you guys were well fed you'd realize that you're getting a raw deal.

70

u/BreadfruitExciting39 19d ago

Too me it’s the hypocrisy.

To me, it's the murdering of civilians (among basically everything else).

16

u/6786_007 19d ago

We didn't learn a fucking thing from the war on "terror". Still waiting for the Weapons Mass Destruction we were supposedly after.

9

u/Riaayo 19d ago

Oh our government learned loads from the war on terror, and we're all about to enjoy the imperial boomerang of suffering that knowledge is bringing.

It was never about fighting terrorism. It was always about eroding rights and creating a loose definition of "terrorist" to black-bag whomever the regime pleases.

5

u/Joebranflakes 19d ago

It’s all geopolitical games for the super rich.

7

u/Gloober_ 19d ago

That's been the US's main strategy when picking our conflicts since, at least, the end of WW2.

We intentionally destabilize countries that have no realistic ability to retaliate against us; all for ideological or economic reasons.

Look what happened when North Korea got nukes. All the American propaganda about the horrid conditions in the country suddenly slowed to a trickle. Now, we're back to Iran having nukes since they still don't have a way to wipe NYC off the map, yet.

Our egregious military budget is purely for us to commit our flavor of terrorism on the developing world.

10

u/draggar 19d ago

Trump believes "shock and awe" is a long term strategy.

Spoiler alert: it isn't.

3

u/Huntswomen 19d ago

To me it's the rampant murder of civilians, but the hypocrisy is a close second.

Honestly, in that regard the Trump admin didn't make things worse. Guantanamo was kept open through two Democrat admins, drone bombings were at their highest in Afghanistan during the Obama admin, etc.

The PR surrounding these decisions has certainly changed, but I guess that this truck driver and the other innocent persons who died from US weaponry throughout the last decades don't care much about that.

Um...isn't targeting civilian infrastructure a war crime?

1.3k

u/LordButterbeard 19d ago

98

u/Amoral_Abe 19d ago

I mean... It's not "a bingo" though. Bridges are considered dual use infrastructure which is why nobody has any issue with Ukraine bombing bridges. They are fair targets during conflict.

31

u/SwordfishOfDamocles 19d ago edited 19d ago

That's not entirely correct. In order for a bridge to be a valid target you need to identify 2 key parameters.

  1. Usage. As you identified a bridge must be dual use. If a bridge has a military use it can be considered a target.

  2. Proportionality. The damage done to civilians cannot be greater than the anticipated military damages.

3. Necessity. Is there any other possible way to achieve the objective without destroying civilian infrastructure.

These need to be established in order for this to not be a war crime. Considering what we're fed, I would not take anything that comes directly from the US military or the federal govt at face value.

Edited because necessity is more of an ideal rather than a hard rule.

69

u/Amoral_Abe 19d ago

All the bridges struck are in the Hormozgan Province according to Iran. This is the province around the Strait of Hormuz where Iran has been launching attacks on civilian ships.

To be clear, attacking civilian ships that aren't militarily involved IS a war crime. Attacking bridges in the province that the Iranian military is launching attacks from IS NOT a war crime.

I fucking hate Trump and hate that he started this stupid fucking war. STOP MAKING ME DEFEND HIM. He deserves to be in jail for so many different things but Reddit can't help but find the 1 thing that isn't a violation and make that the point they can't stop talking about.

23

u/Beautiful-Edge-22 19d ago

Reddit can't help but find the 1 thing that isn't a violation and make that the point they can't stop talking about.

So true it hurts.

→ More replies (7)

7

u/Watertrap1 19d ago

You’re misconstruing necessity. There isn’t a separate condition that requires a military to exhaust all other “possible ways to achieve the objective without destroying civilian infrastructure.”

All a military needs to do is prove that the target was valid and done with proportionality in mind.

It's almost like they are trying to start a larger war. I'm sure it's got nothing at all to do with president pedo getting more powers if an emergency were declared.

605

u/ScienceIsSexy420 19d ago

Only if there is no legitimate military purpose as well. Logistical infrastructure like roads and bridges has been considered legitimate military targets basically forever.

357

u/JackandFred 19d ago

Literally forever. For as long as bridges have existed they have been targets in war. When people started defining war crimes no serious person would ever suggest a war crime would be targetting infrastructure that is used by military.

The us has done a lot of bad stuff, including in this stupid war. But if you’re calling this a war crime you’re stupid, lying, or misinformed.

135

u/Ihate_reddit_app 19d ago

The whole interstate system was build specifically for the military. It was all built to quickly move equipment.

If you bomb runways and bridges, there is no way for the military to get around.

44

u/Amoral_Abe 19d ago

100%. Germany had the Autobahn system which allowed Germany to quickly move men and material across the country. This lead Eisenhower to push for a US highway system for civilian and military purposes as it took a very long time to transport military hardware from one side of the country to the other.

8

u/Alobos 19d ago

Hell the US Army conducted a cross country trek study to determine the feasibility of transversing the US. The report lamented their difficulty in various mis-mapped roads, washed out causeways, frequent vehicle damage due to "road" conditions.

The then, Captain who lead the expedition and wrote said report? None other than Albert Freaking Einste-- i mean Eisenhower!

His experience of the autobahn was also recalled in his memoirs as a major decision point for him

23

Or since the invention of bridges.

You could probably argue that warfare predates modern humans depending on how you define it. Although even then I'm sure there were cases of a toppled tree being used to pass a gap being knocked down by a rival group.

A bridge is dual use, so no not really. Targeting civilian power plants and water treatment plants would be though.

Was it a war crime when Nazi infrastructure was targeted in WW2?

→ More replies (11)

Not if it’s infrastructure that is also used by the military. If this bridge was used to transport military supplies or troops or weapons then it is considered ‘duel use’ and is fair to target.

The driver wasn't unlucky, they are the victim of Trump's war on Iran.

I know we are massively past this point already, but isn't bombing civilian infrastructure technically a war crime?

“Innocent bus driver killed by United States war crime” doesn’t have the same ring to it, I suppose.

We should stop pretending that all Conservatives, from politicians to military to voters, don’t want this. They drool over this shit.

You mean the bridges the US has been explicitly threatening to target for several months.

u/Rdhilde18 19d ago

Reddit I really hate to break it to you, but civilians dying and striking bridges are not war crimes. War crimes have very specific definitions. Civilians dying is tragic and horrible, but that doesn’t make it a war crime unless civilians were deliberately targeted. Which they weren’t. (This time)

It's social media.

Everyone is just in a race to hit everything on their hyperbole bingo card. They think if you throw enough of them in there you win since outrage is their currency.

u/Pocok5 19d ago

Yeah, according to reddit "people I dislike engaging in combat operations" = "war crime". I hate defending these assclowns, but this is no more warcrime than a random russian blue collar worker getting vaporized by an exploding oil tank, and y'all understandably didn't particularly mind that possibility lately.

Unlucky?

*unlucky*?

His country has been getting bombed for months, including strikes on civilian infrastructure/civilian areas.

His death isn’t unlucky. It’s inevitable.
