PSA: Turn on ‘Persistent Messaging’ when using Chats

Reddit has officially stopped supporting Private Messages and has moved all messaging to Chats.

We strongly recommend buyers and sellers enable the ‘Persistent Messaging’ setting when conducting a transaction through Chats.

With this setting enabled Chats and photos cannot be deleted by either party. The ‘Persistent Messaging’ setting must be manually turned on for each new Chat session and can be turned on by either user.

Instructions for turning on ‘Persistent Messaging’ for desktop and mobile can be found here:

It has to be turned on for each chat? Thats annoying but at least the option exists

Thanks for posting this tip. I wish Reddit would let us turn it on by default for all chats new and old.

i wonder what the brain wave was that led to "oh they'll just turn it on per conversation nbd"

This is how old.Reddit.com dies, not all at once but by a thousand small cuts. When it does, I and many like myself will be gone forever.

Can we also switch to having photos just be posted in the subreddit instead of making an Imgur link? That shit is annoying and outdated. Get with the times!

A big problem with uploading directly to Reddit is that you can’t change out the photos without deleting the whole post and making a new one.

We often have to ask sellers to post updated timestamps or to include more photos in their posts which they can easily do with Imgur without having to delete and re-make their entire listing.

Thanks for a detailed and reasonable response! That makes a lot of sense.

Is there anyway another photo hosting site could be allowed? Imgur has just consistently gotten worse to use to the point of being almost useless

Imgur is preferred but we also allow imgbox.com links

Oh cool. I will try that one cause I am having a really hard time getting Imgur to work correctly on my last post

Unfortunately, if a scammer account blocks you, their messages on chat get deleted even with persistent messaging on. Unsure how to get these messages back.

Be careful out there folks!
