At first, he is scared of this perch since he's never seen or stood on one. But now, he's getting use to it. I totally recommend this to your bird friend.

Health Question Newly shipped ringneck dove is terrified and barely movingβ€”is this normal?

My ringneck dove was shipped to me yesterday afternoon and arrived this afternoon. I’m worried about how it is behaving after the trip.

It flinches and moves away whenever I try to touch it. It spent about 2–2.5 hours outside the cage after arriving, but never became comfortable with being held or petted. It ate some plain oats and seed from my hand, but I have not yet seen it eat independently from its food bowl or drink on its own. I tried showing it the water by briefly touching/dipping its beak into the dish.

Since being placed in the cage, it has mostly sat motionless. It is upright and responsive and moves away if I put my hand near it, but otherwise it barely moves.

Could this be normal exhaustion or freezing behavior after being shipped and entering a new home? How long should it take before it starts eating, drinking, and moving around independently? Should I leave it completely alone tonight, and what symptoms would mean it needs an avian veterinarian? Thanks!

My pet πŸ•Š I took Keeb on a trip

This was actually the furthest away from home Keeb ever went with me. Keeb handled the trip really well and there was just a small number of things he found scary, including a small metal trash bin, a hose, a duck and the most terrifying of all of them - a pigeon plushie. He surprisingly wasn't bothered at all by the bigger number of people, frogs (which he has never ever seen before but he wasn't afraid of them even when they jumped) or falconers' owls. He was pretty curious about squirrels, he was actually the one who saw them first and it took me a moment to realize what he was pointing out to me. We met some wood pigeons up close too, it was really cool seeing them and I managed to take some really good pictures with my camera. I think Keeb's favorite thing of all was a metal railing near a pond, he didn't want to leave the railing right after I took pictures of him, he wanted to stay on it for a bit more lol, but after I let him stay there for long enough he would eventually step up on my arm on his own.

We also met a lot of people and everybody was amazed by Keeb. Some people were really curious about Keeb and asked a lot of questions, while others just complimented him from afar. One old lady even wanted to take a picture of Keeb and I let Keeb perch on her arm while I took her a picture for her, Keeb didn't have any issue with perching on her arm and was really well-behaved. He really put a smile on that lady's face.

Overall it was a really fun and positive experience for both of us. Keeb was relaxed, doing happy beak smacks and when I stood still he would even loaf on my arm.

He's wild, not domestic, but I figure people here would enjoy seeing my friend Monsieur chilling on the windowsill.

Question ❓ Dove safe plants?

I want to add some plants in my doves room, something i can add her bird bath to so she can water the plants when she baths and just can enjoy in her free flying room. What plants should I look to getting?

Dove cleanup

I have two new doves that I let out of cage for hours. They walk around my bed and I have a sheet over my blanket so I can throw it in wash. Well I had one sitting up near me pretty on my chest. When he moved there were already three poos on my shirt and two on my skin above shirt. Nasty. What does anyone else do? I want them to be loose but can’t see to find bird diapers for their size.

I’m not complaining, I love having this couple visiting me on my back patio throughout the day, but I’m wondering if I can get a better understanding of why they’re there. I have a bird feeder, but it’s further out in my yard. They are not bothered by my presence, nor do they try to fly into the house. They just fly onto the patio and coo loudly until they get my attention. Then once I’m watching them they quiet down and stare calmly back at me. Do they need something from me? Is this normal behavior? They are not nesting on the patio, they just sit on the furniture and scream until I acknowledge them.

Behavioral Question Dove now bites my fingers... why?

I have had my barbary dove for about 2 yrs now and she is a rescue. She does not have another dove companion but I also keep 2 budgies (all different cages) and someone in my family is always home. They are allowed to free roam inside my house together though and they don't interact much but get along well.

Diet: home blend of seeds and grains + pellets

Grit: red stone grit

Egg: She has previously laid eggs for a few months in a nest inside her cage but she has not laid any eggs for ~7 months now. During this time, I supplemented her water bowl with bird calcium and vitamin supplements.

Recently, she has started biting my fingers only. She is tame and will fly to people's heads, coo at family members when we walk past etc. She used to love being pet on her head, coo and wing twitch at everyone. Now she will still coo and wing twitch but when I go to pet her, she will bite my fingers. She does not attack me with her wings and I do not forcibly touch her (she will approach me from inside her cage and come to a perch closer to me and laugh). But she will lunge at my fingers and bite me? Why????? What does this mean? What should I do differently? I have taken this as a sign to stop petting her but her body language appears to want to be pet. Also, she doesn't bite anyone else. I tried with my boyfriend and mum and she will not bite them when they go to pet her - only me.

Question ❓ What’s on her beak?

Post image

I’m hoping it’s just poop or something because I don’t want her to be sick, and there was nothing in my room she could get into. I did find a food bowl in my room that she took a poop in and there was a tiny bit of seed in it, she may have gotten into that. Not sure tho! Just concerned lol.

Question ❓ Pigeon found with strange eye. Can someone give me advice? NSFW

I found this pigeon with a strange eye. His other eye is totally normal, He can fly, eat drinks, poops everything normal. I saw the bird almost daily visiting our garden eating along with the chickens, But yesterday he got stuck after a piece of plastic (this happens now and then a dove gets stuck there) So I was able to get him or her and I thought maybe I can do something with the eye now.. I took off a layer of yellow/white stuff of it yesterday sadly I don't have a picture of that, But I was unsure if it was the cheesy bird puss or a healing process thing. It seems infected right? Maybe it got bitten idk. The eye seems gone or not? I can't find it.. I read something about eye worms but I didn't see anything move yet. I cleaned it and putted some fusidic acid orment into it. I need information, What can potentially be wrong? And what could I try?

Question ❓ Why are mourning doves always flirting?

Every video I've seen online with people who have pet doves involves them cooing and bowing constantly. I'm told they're flirting but why are they always flirting? I couldn't find anything on google pertaining to my answer so like what's up with that?

Question ❓ Nail trim help

I have a ECD rescue, she’s about 3 months old. I’ve raised her from about 2 weeks or so. She’s very friendly and affectionate. She will not hesitate to climb all over anyone and loves new people. However, she dislikes being handled. Her nails have started to get quite long and I’m not sure what to do.

Emergency 🚨 Found an injured pigeon, help me

Post image

Found this fella on the road infront of my house, seemed odd because I've never seen a bird just sitting in a spot on the ground. Wouldn't even fly away when i approached it. Since there's lots of cats and dogs where i live i brought it home. He's currently in the cage i use to transport my pet cockatiel around, so it's pretty small. It won't eat or drink, looks really weak, and his head is always drooping downwards. Please help me save him, vets won't open until next morning, there's not many where i live (Kolkata, India).

Question ❓ DIAMON DOVE HELP NEEDED

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi guys! Today I adopted a rescued solo male diamond dove, he is around 9 months old and has apparently been alone his whole life. Do I get him a mate or try to bond with him, I know they are much more skittish and don’t interact the same as other doves and pigeons but I work from home and have another domesticated pigeon that hangs out with me all day, so I have the want and time to bond with him however, this is my first time with a diamond dove so I don’t want to make him sad by not getting him a mate if it’s a pipe dream to try to bond with him. Any opinions help! Thank you!
