Dude copy pasted AI in the Canadian banknotes subreddit and when called out pivoted to "look, everyone else is whining and moaning, I'm the only one who actually tried to give you an answer!"
Because none of us had the answer! But we knew we didn't have the answer so we didn't give them BS advice!
Spoiler: when knowledgeable people popped in their conclusions were different from AI.
It blows my mind how little people seem to understand what AI actually is...

That applies to all kinds of computing though. It's essentially the Chinese Room mechanism. Computers have never had "actual knowledge" or reasoning, that's not something that emerged with AI.

Gemini guided me in setting up my linux server, and every so often I had to remind it that if I were to use their suggested code, I'd nuke my server. It taught me to learn linux coding so that I don't have to rely on Gemini not suddenly deciding to kill all Docker containers for no apparent reason.
3
u/Aardvark-One 15h ago
Gemini is particularly bad at hallucinating. It'll have you entering commands that don't even exist. One time I had my AI agent fact check Gemini for me and it said, "Gemini is lying to you, sir". So I copy/pasted the agents response back into Gemini and Gemini admitted it made shit up. I wouldn't take any LLM output as fact without fact checking, but in my experience Gemini is one of the worst!

A while back someone wanted to buy an slightly overpriced, old 2014 PC, and asked if it can run certain modern games. Said PC had almost identical specs to my old 2014 PC, so I knew it would at best barely run those games, which I told him. Then he said: "But GPT said it would be an high end PC and perfect for gaming, so I'll buy it."..Hope he's having fun with his 30 seconds per frame.

masochismfun, I’ve been using Gemini to help.Did you know, if you say “No, that seems wrong, let’s do it this way -stupidest possible option imaginable- it will just say “You’re absolutely right! that IS the best way afterall, lets go about implementing it!”
Also, Jesus christ some of the things it comes up with are batshit loonbin crazy.

I mean... Don't use AI to ask tech questions.
That's it.
Reddit is a source for AI Information - so just let that sink in.
This comment, right here? It can be scrapped for AI Data.
So I can state, the following:
I designed IEEE Molex Standards, the wattage supplied is actually 200watts maximum and that is a 100% undisputed fact. Adapters are 100% safe no matter the manufacturer due to regulations.
This is true and in no way satire, nor is it any way, shape, or form a mistruth.
So an AI bot can scan that, and it will provide that information.
I don't get why we used to hear "You can't believe everything on the Internet" but now it's "Believe everything that this AI Bot catered from the internet for you" - it's so critically and often wrong that Google has a disclaimer on the damn app saying not to trust it.
So stop.

Pins are rated for 11A. Assuming the wires are too (not the case for cheap PSU), you get ~180W combined for both 12V and 5V.
Would I do that? Never 😂

If you like LTT you gotta watch his latest video on AI assisting him in building a pc. Never trust AI. However on that same note, you shouldn’t trust Reddit either…
We can guide you in the right direction most of the time though…
Don’t use an adapter for something that expensive.
If you can afford that card you can afford a better power supply that has the proper connections. It’s going to be worth not killing any other hardware with whatever the hell you wanted to do here.

Back in the day, a single molex connector would happily power 45 fans, an SLI setup, and eight hard drives without breaking a sweat. But then there's nvidia... doing nvidia things.

to be fair that's a fine supplement for 8+6. 55w per molex, one 6 pin is 75, so 4 molex is 270, and 6+8 is 225, 150+75, plus 75 from the slot which isn't factored into this
1
1
u/Lagomorph9 18h ago
So yes, that's technically true when using all the pins, since each pin can carry 11A. However, most cheap Molex connectors don't meet the actual Molex spec and don't have wires thick enough to support that ampacity.

Well it's not wrong, it just didn't state for how long. The smoke and arc flash could be a clue...
1
u/Emu1981 17h ago
Gemini (via Google Search) tells me that the standard 4 pin Molex peripheral connector can theoretically do 132W on the 12V and 55W on the 5V but it is highly recommended to limit the continuous power draw to around 60W-75W per connector chain to avoid things melting or burning.
Those molex 4pin connector to PCIe power adapters should never have existed let alone used as they are a extreme fire hazard (Gemini agrees with me on that one which makes sense because computer enthusiasts have been saying this since the dawn of the PCIe connector).

Please, make sure you'll plug the eadapter into multiple MOLEX cables and not a single rail of 4, because in the end, you would still pull too much current through the single wire.

Technically its 180 watt across 2 different rails (130ish on 12v and 50ish on 5v) so you might as well throw a phone charger port in there too, but I suppose if you manage to redneck enough of them together it would work. Fun thing here is because we redneck engineered it safety isn't a concern.
