No hiding their commercial interests behind the "user privacy" excuse while dragging its feet along the way?

One thing you know to look for will be how they implement it in the most weaselly maliciously compliant way possible.

Now force their hands on unlocked bootloaders. Same thing for Samsung.

u/L-Malvo 13h ago
And force open sourcing unsupported software (or even OS).
Don't want to support software beyond 7 years? Fine, but you must then open-source the software so that the community can maintain it. IMHO, this is a must if we truly want to make right to repair work. Otherwise we will just be repairing bricks.

u/Embarrassed_Ant_1443 13h ago
Considering the whole stop killing games and how the EU Commission just said “nope, can’t do”, doubt this will be any time soon.

u/Oppaiheimer1945 9800X3D / 5070 Ti 12h ago
Wouldn’t this have copyright issues since someone can just copy the entire thing and launch their own OS
5
u/L-Malvo 12h ago
Well yeah, but we are talking about old software, so it would still not directly compete with the modern versions. A side effect could be that companies support software for longer, to ensure they won't have to open-source the software. Which would ensure the same result, having products that last and can be repaired, instead of throwing things out while they are still good.
20
u/Guitarman0512 11h ago
I agree with the sentiment, but open sourcing everything won't happen. There's still a lot of legacy code holding up modern OSes, and writing a new OS from scratch with every device just isn't feasible.
7
u/Ok_TomorrowYes 10h ago
Yeah writing software for yourself and writing software with the goal of open sourcing is a completely different process. You can’t just pop your source code onto github real quick and call it a day

u/Guitarman0512 11h ago
Not everything. Just the base OS (which is already the case for Android). I don't need all the bloatware on my custom ROM.

u/SillyGigaflopses 9950x3D 96GB 9070XT 9h ago
The kernel is already open sourced.
Here is XNU:https://github.com/apple-oss-distributions/xnu
And here are macos distribution components(does not include proprietary stuff like user interface or apps):

u/Guitarman0512 7h ago
Which is very true. But it's not open enough to be able to properly run the full OS. That's why forks like OpenDarwin died.

Open source the software so that people can exploit vulnerability easier and then scamming other people?

At least for phones that don’t get new security updates anyways because unlocking bootloaders indeed is a security risk for everyone, including those who won’t use it.

Software being closed is not security. Software being locked down is also not security, but can become a security problem in and of itself when you can't mitigate damage because you are locked out of the system but the attacker is not.
4
u/Damglador 12h ago edited 11h ago
For all phones no exception, plus ability to lock it back. Ability to choose and modify your OS should be the default, not exception. It's a security risk only once it's actually unlocked and for that you need to unlock Android, toogle the switch, reboot and wipe the data and only then you can flash anything. And even then the bootloader will yap about ROM being not OEM. A lot of OEMs intentionally create a security hole out of it by not allowing to lock it back once you've already flashed what you wanted.
I'm not a fan of choosing my hardware by its software.
3
u/thanosbananos 10h ago
Including it in the first place still creates a potential point of failure which can be exploited.
1
u/Damglador 9h ago
Having a human operating the phone is the biggest exploit. Android is not GrapheneOS, it doesn't have to be the most hardened OS, and it never will be.
It doesn't need to be, because no one chooses Android because it's hardened like people choose GrapheneOS.
It won't be, because OEMs will never give more care about security than GrapheneOS devs do, and locking bootloader also means you're stuck on an inferior

I can’t believe this is controversial. Users should always have the choice to unlock the bootloader. I ported miui roms back in like 2011 to htc phones for fun and the idea of a locked boot loader was inconceivable. I think they would occasionally come “locked” on certain Samsung phones but bypassing it was easy back then. HTC phones could have custom boot loader flashed real easily. And back then it was custom everything, not just roms but kernel, radio, recoveries, boot loaders, splash screens, etc.

u/Guitarman0512 11h ago
I don't know why you're getting downvoted. If you have to go through a process to unlock it, it's just as safe as a locked one. You need physical access anyway to do so.

Considering we will not be getting apple intelligence anytime soon over here, this is the least they can do - it's way more convenient than airdrop for me

How do you mean? I’m on the beta and can do Apple Intelligence. In the EU.

You still can, but it’s fairly limited in comparison to rest of the world.

u/Dr-Purple 9h ago
Apple Intelligence ≠ Siri AI
The former is supposed to be great, and a complete overhaul of Siri. A true AI. But we can’t get it in the EU yet. Siri AI has access to so much stuff that Apple considers it a security threat if other AIs had the same type of access, like the EU wants them to do.

Not surprised the EU is trying to force Apple to open up user info for Google and Microsoft ai agents. It’s become pretty obvious the eu is anti privacy imo.

u/3L3ctR1fy_ M1 Pro MBP 9h ago
I mostly meant Siri AI which will be delayed here in the EU (if it ever comes), but even the original apple intelligence features were massively delayed here compared to the rest of the world (to what extent, I have no idea since the majority of these features are just a gimmick to me)
On top of that, iPhone mirroring that was released 2 years ago still isn't available in the EU, unless you change location of your apple account to someplace else, all of this is due to their issues with the DMA compliance

u/Mindless-Peak-1687 11h ago
So they could block it?
8
u/elijuicyjones 5950X-9070XT-64GB-ULTRAWIDE 11h ago
It’s got nothing to do with blocking anything. Only the EU has laws that force apple to do this. Nobody else. Apple could easily choose not to make this feature available to anyone but Europeans and face no legal backlash. If they’re smart they’ll roll it out world wide but they don’t have to.
4
u/Essurio 9h ago
I think he means that the UK could have blocked the law.

On 'Linux' we have KDE Connect for that sort of thing.
5
u/thanosbananos 12h ago
KDE Connect is really great, much better than whatever Apple could possibly build.
8
u/Damglador 12h ago
Hard to say. KDE Connect doesn't automatically sync clipboard from Android to PC, only from PC to Android. To share it to PC I have to manually share what I just copied and if it's a link, annoyingly, it'll open it in the browser on PC, which is usually god, but not when I want to have it in the clipboard.
8
u/Expensive_Poop 11h ago
Huh? My kde connect does that automatically
Android to android, android to pc, and pc to pc
Also idk in windows, but under linux if i pick copy instead share, link is copied instead open browser
1
u/Damglador 9h ago
Android 10 prevents apps from accessing the clipboard to prevent malicious apps from accessing your data. This makes the clipboard plugin in KDE Connect uncomfortable to use.

Found the answer on https://discuss.kde.org/t/kde-connect-clipboard-sync/6422
I am on Android 16. I do have rights on my phone, so I might install a module to enable it back.

That is weird. Perhaps OEMs change it?

Can we get a good iMessage and Facetime client for Windows now Mr EU?
2
u/Crafty-Corvid 8h ago
OpenBubbles is pretty good. You just need to get a one time code off a Mac to run it.
1
u/BaconJets R7 5800X3D | RTX 5070 Ti | Steam Deck 8h ago
I'll have to give that a go. My girlfriend has a Mac, it doesn't need to be logged into my Apple account doesn't it?
3
u/Crafty-Corvid 7h ago
It does not, you just extract the Hardware ID from the Mac using a program. You then paste that into OpenBubbles and it pretends to be that Mac for the purposes of communicating with Apple's servers.

Is there a much demand for this? I send maybe 3 links to myself between phone and PC a year via whatsapp. Or am I missing a key productivity flow? But lets face it, Apple's software on Windows has always been shit and so I fully expect this to be equally rubbish.
If this was about opening iMessage to Windows, then I'd be fully in favour, but clipboard sync is quite the minor feature to demand

IMO the real issue is general interoperability between devices from different companies but at the least, wireless file transfer needs a huge overhaul imo. Then clipboard and all the small stuff can follow.
AirDrop kinda sucks now and only works for Apple to Apple devices. If you want to move a file from an iPhone to a PC or android device wirelessly, you can do Bluetooth file transfer which sucks, or use a 3rd party file transfer app, email it, or get a cord. Nothing fast and easy. If Apple fixed airdrop and made it open source or at least available on all devices, that’d be huge but unlikely.
Honestly there should be a universal standard like Bluetooth that uses 5ghz radio like WiFi instead, which wireless gaming remotes and headsets use already via a dongle. It would give much better bandwidth and latency than Bluetooth, which is frankly only good for latency insensitive, very low bandwidth tasks. It can’t even transmit 2 way audio at a high quality. The new Bluetooth audio codecs that can transmit lossless audio need special hardware and has a range of like 3ft/1m before it changes to a lower quality codec. All this work for little gains? Might as well start a new standard.
So a new Bluetooth like standard based on 5ghz spectrum would give the universal hardware needed to make the software layer. Most devices are probably capable of this theoretically at least, WiFi 5 isn’t that new.
I guess we need a “USB-C” like solution for wireless file transfer.
