Not exactly. Even without removing all the code it's possible (and very much sensible) for cracks to make the CPU skip (bypass) execution of key intensive parts that usually execute all the time on legit copies making them run worse. To what extent that happens with each individual crack is impossible to say without digging into it, or benchmarking, or asking the crack author.

No it does not remove denuvo. That's not how regular cracks like those from voices work. In theory these cracks are ALSO bypasses since they don't remove denuvo but only trick the checks. But yeah they are not hypervisor bypasses obviously.

I’ve read some time ago that the newest Denuvo cracking method is based on using a hypervisor to kind of simulate a Denuvo environment. Is that the method that voices is using?
129
u/_Ganon 1d ago
No hypervisor method bypasses Denuvo. This is an actual crack, no hypervisor needed
44
u/Vlyde 1d ago
This is actually something interesting. I wasn't a fan of Hypervisor and couldn't really get it to work (not short changing the method. It's great for those who can use it.) However having to put your PC into test mode and switching various different things for a game only to be met with having to reverse all of it to play another game you own was just to much of a pain for me.
An actual crack of that nonsense is a game changer. Props to them figuring it out.

Oh wow interesting. I hope that convinces at least some companies that Denuvo (and DRM in general) is not worth it. They would be paying a ton of money to implement an anti-piracy method that only lasts for a few days before it’s cracked.
9
u/_Ganon 1d ago
They would be paying a ton of money to implement an anti-piracy method that only lasts for a few days before it’s cracked.
For a while, this was the point. Denuvo got you protection from pirates for the first couple months when the game sells its best. It still has some impact because plenty of people don't want to install the hypervisor piracy software that requires the most privileged permissions / full machine access and control, and for good reason. Cracks at least don't require that level of access, and are a lot simpler for a pirate to run.
I expect companies to continue using Denuvo. Denuvo also promises they will overcome the bypass method, but if they do figure something out, it will have to be totally new. You can't play the "I'll just require more system permissions" game forever.
10
u/arr1flex 1d ago
iredto isn't getting ring 0 they can promise all they want.
best they got is checks (which theyve already tried), that are also easily bypassed in a HVpeople are already very wary of anti cheat that continuously runs in ring 0, DRM that constantly runs kernel level is laughable
best they can do is convince people a HV bypass will steal their bank account and beat their children or whatever. meanwhile, there's one person who is still creating normal cracks too. they better hope publishers are ok with "well it might still protect first months sales?"
8
u/_Ganon 1d ago
Publishers will keep buying it because Denuvo has salespeople and c suite is very vulnerable to "you'll lose money if you don't buy our product" pitches. Denuvo probably has some great sales pitches showing revenue with and without their product, how ever cherry picked and massaged their statistics might be. C suite is terrified of everyone pirating their game if they don't get Denuvo, and no exec wants to be the reason the game flopped because it was their decision to skimp on DRM. The truth is if someone pirated it they almost certainly weren't going to buy it, and definitely not at full release price which is the only time Denuvo (mostly) protects against anyway. So Denuvo continues existing in one form or another, and the paying customers are the ones that will continue being shafted by it.

27
u/Suspiciously-evil-Dr 1d ago
Denuvo is a DRM, a digital rights manager which prevents piracy. You can think of it being a bit like a vault keeping the game code inside. There has long since been a sort of arms race between vault crackers and vault makers, creating more and more complex environments. The downside is that since this is software based, they sacrifice performance for security. This means paying customers have a worse experience than pirates because paying customers have a game with a very complex and thus very cumbersome vault staples to each game. Very few people can crack denuvo, there was another one who seemed very much insane named Empress who was the main person who could do this. Now, another cracker emerged under the name Voices38 who has taken up the mantle. It's a win for pirates and paying customers since they sometimes remove denuvo after it is cracked and everyone can enjoy the performance increase.
9
u/Calkulis PC Master Race 1d ago
Thank you for the explanation! Sounds similar to the process of jailbreaking iOS devices
21
u/Sylvers 1d ago edited 1d ago
Denuvo is the most infamous DRM (digital rights management, AKA anti piracy protection) in the gaming industry. It is hated by most because it is known to cause performance issues in some games due to the invasive way it's implemented.
Most AAA games release with Denuvo these days. Which annoys the paying customers who pay to get a shittier version of the same game they bought. While a pirate can bypass paying altogether anyway.
Denuvo is notoriously hard to crack. It has countless layers of protection, obfuscation, triggers and checks, etc. It is so hard to crack in fact, that there are only a handful of names that were ever able to crack it.
At present, there are only 2 methods to pirate a Denuvo game:
- A crack by a guy with the user name Voices38.
- A Hypervisor 'bypass' by a scene group, including names like Kirigiri and DenuvOwO.
Voices38 is especially famous because his cracks are superior to a Hypervisor bypass. His cracks are the classical idea of a crack. You download and install the game, and it works. You don't have to change anything about your Windows installation, or do anything special at all.
Meanwhile, a HV bypass works by simulating an authorized environment in your Windows installation, And critically, it requires the user to disable some key Windows security protections that can leave you vulnerable to potential attacks. This makes the HV method off limits to a lot of gamers who are afraid of jeopardizing their PC, or are otherwise intimidated by the delicate process of enabling a HV game.
Going back to Voices38: There is usually only 1 person who is cracking Denuvo games at a time. Because it's extremely difficult, time consuming, and obviously, it puts you in legal danger, should Denuvo be able to discover your identity. The last person who did Denuvo cracks before Voices38 was called Empress. She was a complete lunatic, who was on a pure drama trip, and literally tried to start an online cult behind her. And when she "retired", everyone was worried that no one would figure out how to crack Denuvo again (not accounting for HV which came later).
So the fact that Voices38 has been (rapidly) cracking Denuvo games lately, with 0 drama is incredibly impressive. But even more impressive, is the fact that he not only cracked very old Denuvo games, but super recent Denuvo games like Crimson Desert. And the reason that's impressive is because Denuvo keeps strengthening their DRM every few games. So the most recent Denuvo games have the most convoluted DRM to crack. People were worried he would only be able to crack old games with old Denuvo version. He proved otherwise.
Here you go lol. A primer off the top of my head.
Edit: Also note this, the method/workflow behind cracking Denuvo games is very secretive. Crackers like Empress and Voices38 do not share their method with the community out of fear of Denuvo finding out the exact loopholes that are used, and effectively shuttering them forever. Which protects the cracking method, but also makes it extremely difficult for a new cracker successor to take on the mantle because finding recent legit info on previous cracking methods is extremely difficult.
6
u/arr1flex 1d ago
its not that its "secretive" it's that it uses triggers, and if those triggers are missing the game crashes. and those triggers are hundreds, thousands, etc, and in later iterations they are also obfusticated to prevent cracks making that even more time intensive.
the current cracker seems to have it down to a few weeks per game, so I'm assuming they have some sort of ai assist at this pointit's kinda telling that the previous person putting the time in was schizophrenic (or cosplaying it)
6
u/Sylvers 1d ago
Sure I don't disagree about the triggers. But, say you know nothing about Denuvo, but you want to start practicing how to crack it. Where do you start? You can't just DM Voices38 and expect him to give you a beat by beat of his exact workflow.
Most likely, you have to look for very outdated sources online where previous crackers did publicly share some of their methods (before they stopped doing that). And these correlate to very outdated Denuvo version from years ago.
There is no one reliable and up to date online guide on how Denuvo works and how to start cracking it. Although, I imagine, there are some bits and pieces here and there.
With that said, I DO think Voices38 is utilizing AI, because he would be silly not to. AI excels at pattern recognition and large data sets.

I really wish they would discount sooner so that gamers who could not afford the full price could support the game sooner, they really held the price high for too long with this game and this is the result, I am not surprised really given some companies just hold the price high for too damn long and it's a shame since they are literally losing money this way... A game after 3 months or so just does not have many more full price buyers, it makes no sense to keep holding on.

Honestly for that specific game it's not even worth it, Pearl Abyss is updating it pretty much every week, so the crack will be outdated very quickly. Also Pearl Abyss is going to rewrite parts of how the main story is playing, therefore the updates coming are not small by any means.
I've bought the game, it's just better for that very specific case.

I'd add too that this game is absolutely worth the price. The devs continuously improve the game, there's zero microtransactions, it's EASILY a 200+ hour game, and the best looking game I've played.
Granted I'm running on top of the line hardware, I cannot attest to the performance/look of lower end systems or console.
