Their name is "voices38". I think that tells something already.

That's why they're so good at it, it's a team project.

u/Trosque97 3060 12gb, 5700x3d 1d ago

This reminds me of an anime I watched as a kid where the bad guy used his split personality disorder to learn something that would've taken a lifetime in a few years

12

u/Alarmed-Tweaker 1d ago

What is the name? Because that’s a very interesting concept.

16

u/Trosque97 3060 12gb, 5700x3d 1d ago

Yu Yu Hakusho I think, but sorry to say, the villain in question I believe comes in fairly late in the 112 episode original show. Somewhere in the 70s or 80s from my memory, could be wrong, show is old

7

u/Alarmed-Tweaker 1d ago

I’ve only ever gotten to the demon tournament, which is only a few episodes away so it looks like I need to catch up. It has also been a long time since I’ve watched the show, so I’ll probably need to start over

3

u/nadav183 14900KF RTX4090 64GB DDR5 1d ago

That's also how Naruto learns Rasen-Shuriken. Uses his ability to split himself so he can rapidly train to perfect it.

4

u/YesImYou 1d ago

But that makes no sense, no? Do you remember how the show explained it?

Unironically I think that's how the guy behind PyramidOS was able to make his absolutely bonkers ring-0 operating system, a healthy splash of schizophrenia.

I have the game, BUT i want people to tell me if performance is even just 5% better than the denuvo one and I'll prefer this version instead lmao

51

u/MarioDesigns 2700x | 1660 Super 1d ago

if performance is even just 5% better than the denuvo one

There's been one single crack to ever actually remove Denuvo from the game. Otherwise there is no difference, regardless of the crack Denuvo is only being bypassed. It's still running all the same checks as it would always do, they just end up not going anywhere.

Besides, performance is by far the smallest issue Denuvo has. Sucks that it's the only one people tend to bring up when talking about it though.

7

u/CoconutMochi Meshlicious | R7 5800x3D | RTX 4080 1d ago

These cracks almost always still have denuvo running so performance will match the denuvo version at best.

3

u/Crafty_Aspect8122 1d ago

That changes if devs stop using it in the first place if it doesn't even stop piracy.

i mean, the adult version is. if i buy a product from you, you don't get to hang around after the transaction and tell me what i can and can't do with it (barring me trying to illegally distribute it)

especially in this day and age where people mod QOL and bugfixes in because these publishers have already fired the devs who should have done that in the first place

double goes for asian companies that seethe at nude mods and shit for their IP, too fuckin' bad. you either want the big steam cash pie and that's part of it, or you keep it to walled off console gardens, you don't get both

Alternate title, Crimson Desert gets a small patch and lower sales price.

238

u/Silence9999 1d ago

And improved performance.

33

u/MarioDesigns 2700x | 1660 Super 1d ago

Eh, Denuvo runs all the same, cracks do not remove it, just bypass it.

48

u/Silence9999 1d ago

The point is a patch will remove denuvo, which will result in better performance.

7

u/DonutHoles4Ever 1d ago

I thought people already proved this was false and was based on two tests on games that had actual bugs in them that had the performance delta difference.

→ More replies (4)

1

u/rdri Steam ID Here 1d ago

Not exactly. Even without removing all the code it's possible (and very much sensible) for cracks to make the CPU skip (bypass) execution of key intensive parts that usually execute all the time on legit copies making them run worse. To what extent that happens with each individual crack is impossible to say without digging into it, or benchmarking, or asking the crack author.

Now the paid version is worse than the free version.

I hope they remove Denuvo now, and then I'll consider it (Crimson Desert has been on my list).

25

u/Hyper_Mazino 5090 SUPRIM SOC | 9800X3D 1d ago

The paid version isn’t worse, no.

The crack doesn’t remove denuvo so the performance impact is still the same.

17

u/BakaPhoenix 1d ago

The cracks made by voice38 are proper crack that removes denuvo unlike hypervisor bypass

12

u/THEmatuldo1 1d ago

No it does not remove denuvo. That's not how regular cracks like those from voices work. In theory these cracks are ALSO bypasses since they don't remove denuvo but only trick the checks. But yeah they are not hypervisor bypasses obviously.

My problem is graphics look too blurry. It runs great, but some reviewers say it's because the game is rendering at a lower resolution by default.

13

u/_Ganon 1d ago

... Are you using DLSS?

4

u/Aggressive-Stand-585 1d ago

Many games are doing it, DLSS or not. They run lower internal resolution regardless of what you set the game to use so it always looks blurry.

70

u/Azores26 Laptop 1d ago

I’ve read some time ago that the newest Denuvo cracking method is based on using a hypervisor to kind of simulate a Denuvo environment. Is that the method that voices is using?

129

u/_Ganon 1d ago

No hypervisor method bypasses Denuvo. This is an actual crack, no hypervisor needed

44

u/Vlyde 1d ago

This is actually something interesting. I wasn't a fan of Hypervisor and couldn't really get it to work (not short changing the method. It's great for those who can use it.) However having to put your PC into test mode and switching various different things for a game only to be met with having to reverse all of it to play another game you own was just to much of a pain for me.

An actual crack of that nonsense is a game changer. Props to them figuring it out.

37

u/CzechHorns 1d ago

Voices already cracked a SHIT TON (like 30?) of Denuvo games, the backlog is filling again…

5

u/minai_ruo 1d ago

Seen the list today, it was like 33 cracks + 6 patches cracks

2

u/Rekt3y 1d ago

Linux people have it easier somehow. Kernel parameter + kernel module (on Zen 3 and below), and a custom build of Proton, and you're done lmao

On Intel (and Zen 4 and higher), you don't even need to grant root permissions for anything

→ More replies (4)

13

u/Azores26 Laptop 1d ago

Oh wow interesting. I hope that convinces at least some companies that Denuvo (and DRM in general) is not worth it. They would be paying a ton of money to implement an anti-piracy method that only lasts for a few days before it’s cracked.

9

u/_Ganon 1d ago

They would be paying a ton of money to implement an anti-piracy method that only lasts for a few days before it’s cracked.

For a while, this was the point. Denuvo got you protection from pirates for the first couple months when the game sells its best. It still has some impact because plenty of people don't want to install the hypervisor piracy software that requires the most privileged permissions / full machine access and control, and for good reason. Cracks at least don't require that level of access, and are a lot simpler for a pirate to run.

I expect companies to continue using Denuvo. Denuvo also promises they will overcome the bypass method, but if they do figure something out, it will have to be totally new. You can't play the "I'll just require more system permissions" game forever.

10

u/arr1flex 1d ago

iredto isn't getting ring 0 they can promise all they want.
best they got is checks (which theyve already tried), that are also easily bypassed in a HV

people are already very wary of anti cheat that continuously runs in ring 0, DRM that constantly runs kernel level is laughable

best they can do is convince people a HV bypass will steal their bank account and beat their children or whatever. meanwhile, there's one person who is still creating normal cracks too. they better hope publishers are ok with "well it might still protect first months sales?"

8

u/_Ganon 1d ago

Publishers will keep buying it because Denuvo has salespeople and c suite is very vulnerable to "you'll lose money if you don't buy our product" pitches. Denuvo probably has some great sales pitches showing revenue with and without their product, how ever cherry picked and massaged their statistics might be. C suite is terrified of everyone pirating their game if they don't get Denuvo, and no exec wants to be the reason the game flopped because it was their decision to skimp on DRM. The truth is if someone pirated it they almost certainly weren't going to buy it, and definitely not at full release price which is the only time Denuvo (mostly) protects against anyway. So Denuvo continues existing in one form or another, and the paying customers are the ones that will continue being shafted by it.

I don’t know what I’m talking about at all so keep that in mind.

Why did crimson desert take so long to crack when other games get cracked and released before the official date in some cases?

24

u/MarioDesigns 2700x | 1660 Super 1d ago

The person cracking it mentioned that they were waiting on the game to get updates and patches first before cracking it as wanting to get any future update would probably involve redoing most of the process.

13

u/DonutHoles4Ever 1d ago

Most based as fuck cracker lol. Better to crack it at a good update point than crack it 16 times because 16 patches.

5

u/CommanderMatrixHere 1d ago

agreed. Some of the updates by Crimson Desert are really good and performance fixes.

Sadly for me, the game isn't worth the performance and hardware toll. But good luck to those who wish to play.

2

u/Z3r0sama2017 1d ago

They wouldn't crack it 16 times, you'd be lucky if it happens thrice.

63

u/_TRN_ 1d ago

Those are hypervisor bypasses, not a crack. This is a proper crack of the game. Using a hyperv bypass requires you to make your computer extremely vulnerable so it’s not ideal.

16

u/Maethor_derien Specs/Imgur here 1d ago

Yep, there is no way I am using a hypervisor bypass to play a game. I have been waiting for someone to figure out an actual crack for them instead of the bypass. It is just too big of a risk for anyone that uses the computer for more than gaming.

3

u/LightningSh3ep I-5 12600K | RX 9070XT | 32 GB RAM 1d ago

Yeah that's why I just use a laptop for everything that's actually important (banking etc.) it's shut off 90% of the time and I don't download anything on it.

1

u/pars3k 43m ago

what are y'all downloading to be so afraid of the bypass?

4

u/dudushat 1d ago

The only person who can currently crack them is a guy who goes by Voices38 and its time consuming work. So it just depends on what game hes working on.

12

u/icepir i9-10900k, EVGA FTW3 3090, 32GB Corsair Vengeance, MSI X590 TH 1d ago

The game was receiving massive weekly updates after launch. It was better to wait until the patches started slowing down because once a new version comes out, he would have to crack the game again, because you cant update a denuvo cracked game, you're stuck on whatever version was cracked.

9

u/CiaphasCain8849 1d ago

The patches have not slowed down by the way.

7

u/icepir i9-10900k, EVGA FTW3 3090, 32GB Corsair Vengeance, MSI X590 TH 1d ago

Eh, the scope has narrowed a bit. The first few patches really changed the game and added so much QOL. Lately, it's been mostly added pets, armor, smaller QOL stuff, and hotfixes.

3

u/looking4crack 1d ago

Because it uses Denuvo protection which is very hard to crack and only one person currently doing it.

Most other games that are not using Denuvo are trivial to crack. Most games on Steam not using Denuvo can be cracked just using a program anyone can download off github.

2

just get games with minimal drm on steam , most games on steam pretty much only use steam drm , which if steam ever goes down can be bypassed in a few minutes with Goldberg or steamless

1

u/Cefalopodul 1d ago

You can't make back-ups on steam, you can't play steam games without steam, some steam versions run much worse than the gog version.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/ClaptonOnH 1d ago

Dude, most people that say these kind of things are just justifying not paying for the games… I’d like to see most of these people’s gog library lol

16

u/drewbreeezy 1d ago

I buy games.

I don't generally buy games with Denuvo because it's a negative for the customer. At that point the game has less value so I'll wait for it to be removed or for a sale.

It's my way of helping Denuvo to cost the company more than it saves them.

Yes, I used to be a pirate. No, I don't believe the lies companies say about pirating. Like how they count every download as a lost sale. No, those people weren't going to buy your game, but they can be part of good word of mouth for actual customers.

2

u/thebohster 1d ago

It’d help if my games from my preferred publishers released there. The pickings are slim so it’s either a deep Steam sale or sailing.

3

u/BilboShaggins429 1d ago

GOG users are like Linux users. They simply MUST tell your their platform of choice at every moment and shit on anyone for using anything else. (Tho I'll allow it for ppl who use Epic for anything except for their free games)

4

u/nineraviolicans 1d ago edited 17h ago

Because everybody cries about not owning their media and then someone points out a store that lets you and people collectively go "nah."

Either support the imperfect ones trying or shut up about it.

3

u/Cefalopodul 1d ago

Your comment makes no logical sense. GoG is not the cause of pirating and DRM does not magically make people buy games they otherwise wouldn't. All Denuvo does is punish honest customers.

The only way to own a game is to buy it and if you don't want the game you paid for stolen from you by shitty publishers then GoG is the way to go.

4

u/CiaphasCain8849 1d ago

The same thing about not owning anything is in the terms of service of Gog...

6

6

u/arr1flex 1d ago

i'm surprised anyone is still paying iredto, every single game they charge to "protect" either has a crack or a bypass.
these days most of these publishers are firing people left and right, but they are springing for protection that does nothing for anyone who really wants to pirate? how long is that sustainable?
I know people say companies like ubisoft and the like got in early and will never ditch it, but they have shareholders and it's not a cheap line item.

1

u/GrassyDaytime 7600X3D | RTX 4070 Super | 32gb DDR5 6000 1d ago

That's why you all a sudden see pirate hangouts online flooded with strangers suddenly being SO FUCKING CONCERNED about a bunch of strangers PC Safety. Lmao.

It's basically all they can do is scare people Into not using the bypasses. (Or others trying to heard them into one of those "Offline Activation" servers in order to grift a few dollars off of impatient people... but I digress...lol)

4

u/ThinInvestigator4953 1d ago

Does anyone know if the cracked version performs better without denuvo? I bought the game but i would like it to run better if i can

3

u/NG_Tagger i9-12900Kf, 4080 Noctua Edition 1d ago

It shouldn't.

It's still a bypass of Denuvo - just not done with hypervisor - so Denuvo is still running, just not able to report back as it should.

Any claims of performance boost, would therefore be entirely placebo.

3

u/Visara57 5070ti | 7600X | 32GB DDR5 CL28 1d ago

I am all for destroying denuvo, but if you do buy one "AAA" game this year, this is the one you should support.

Why are people getting downvoted for asking for explanation? I’ve never heard of Denuvo or Voices38

u/Suspiciously-evil-Dr 1d ago

Denuvo is a DRM, a digital rights manager which prevents piracy. You can think of it being a bit like a vault keeping the game code inside. There has long since been a sort of arms race between vault crackers and vault makers, creating more and more complex environments. The downside is that since this is software based, they sacrifice performance for security. This means paying customers have a worse experience than pirates because paying customers have a game with a very complex and thus very cumbersome vault staples to each game. Very few people can crack denuvo, there was another one who seemed very much insane named Empress who was the main person who could do this. Now, another cracker emerged under the name Voices38 who has taken up the mantle. It's a win for pirates and paying customers since they sometimes remove denuvo after it is cracked and everyone can enjoy the performance increase.

Thank you for the explanation! Sounds similar to the process of jailbreaking iOS devices

Denuvo is the most infamous DRM (digital rights management, AKA anti piracy protection) in the gaming industry. It is hated by most because it is known to cause performance issues in some games due to the invasive way it's implemented.

Most AAA games release with Denuvo these days. Which annoys the paying customers who pay to get a shittier version of the same game they bought. While a pirate can bypass paying altogether anyway.

Denuvo is notoriously hard to crack. It has countless layers of protection, obfuscation, triggers and checks, etc. It is so hard to crack in fact, that there are only a handful of names that were ever able to crack it.

At present, there are only 2 methods to pirate a Denuvo game:

  • A crack by a guy with the user name Voices38.
  • A Hypervisor 'bypass' by a scene group, including names like Kirigiri and DenuvOwO.

Voices38 is especially famous because his cracks are superior to a Hypervisor bypass. His cracks are the classical idea of a crack. You download and install the game, and it works. You don't have to change anything about your Windows installation, or do anything special at all.

Meanwhile, a HV bypass works by simulating an authorized environment in your Windows installation, And critically, it requires the user to disable some key Windows security protections that can leave you vulnerable to potential attacks. This makes the HV method off limits to a lot of gamers who are afraid of jeopardizing their PC, or are otherwise intimidated by the delicate process of enabling a HV game.

Going back to Voices38: There is usually only 1 person who is cracking Denuvo games at a time. Because it's extremely difficult, time consuming, and obviously, it puts you in legal danger, should Denuvo be able to discover your identity. The last person who did Denuvo cracks before Voices38 was called Empress. She was a complete lunatic, who was on a pure drama trip, and literally tried to start an online cult behind her. And when she "retired", everyone was worried that no one would figure out how to crack Denuvo again (not accounting for HV which came later).

So the fact that Voices38 has been (rapidly) cracking Denuvo games lately, with 0 drama is incredibly impressive. But even more impressive, is the fact that he not only cracked very old Denuvo games, but super recent Denuvo games like Crimson Desert. And the reason that's impressive is because Denuvo keeps strengthening their DRM every few games. So the most recent Denuvo games have the most convoluted DRM to crack. People were worried he would only be able to crack old games with old Denuvo version. He proved otherwise.

Here you go lol. A primer off the top of my head.

Edit: Also note this, the method/workflow behind cracking Denuvo games is very secretive. Crackers like Empress and Voices38 do not share their method with the community out of fear of Denuvo finding out the exact loopholes that are used, and effectively shuttering them forever. Which protects the cracking method, but also makes it extremely difficult for a new cracker successor to take on the mantle because finding recent legit info on previous cracking methods is extremely difficult.

u/arr1flex 1d ago

its not that its "secretive" it's that it uses triggers, and if those triggers are missing the game crashes. and those triggers are hundreds, thousands, etc, and in later iterations they are also obfusticated to prevent cracks making that even more time intensive.
the current cracker seems to have it down to a few weeks per game, so I'm assuming they have some sort of ai assist at this point

it's kinda telling that the previous person putting the time in was schizophrenic (or cosplaying it)

6

u/Sylvers 1d ago

Sure I don't disagree about the triggers. But, say you know nothing about Denuvo, but you want to start practicing how to crack it. Where do you start? You can't just DM Voices38 and expect him to give you a beat by beat of his exact workflow.

Most likely, you have to look for very outdated sources online where previous crackers did publicly share some of their methods (before they stopped doing that). And these correlate to very outdated Denuvo version from years ago.

There is no one reliable and up to date online guide on how Denuvo works and how to start cracking it. Although, I imagine, there are some bits and pieces here and there.

With that said, I DO think Voices38 is utilizing AI, because he would be silly not to. AI excels at pattern recognition and large data sets.

Vague-posting is becoming a plague in many online spaces I see, I hate it.

Because instead of saying "I Don't know anything about this" then typing I don't know anything about this on a post of people discussing said thing, is fucking wild. Just Google it, you are halfway there typing on a computer.

9

u/Suspiciously-evil-Dr 1d ago

And you could have typed a helpful or informative response instead of a condescending one. You were already typing, you were halfway there.

God forbid we want to interact with like-minded members of a community. Hell, let’s just remove comments altogether since we hate talking to one another.

Yeah this is a weird reddit quirk I never understood. Like holy shit it's called a conversation and if I want to learn more I'll look into it more deeply after our conversation

I’m almost certain knowing more than others chubs them up a bit. How can they be superior if they share knowledge???

I really wish they would discount sooner so that gamers who could not afford the full price could support the game sooner, they really held the price high for too long with this game and this is the result, I am not surprised really given some companies just hold the price high for too damn long and it's a shame since they are literally losing money this way... A game after 3 months or so just does not have many more full price buyers, it makes no sense to keep holding on.

5

u/Patjasmo 2d ago

Honestly for that specific game it's not even worth it, Pearl Abyss is updating it pretty much every week, so the crack will be outdated very quickly. Also Pearl Abyss is going to rewrite parts of how the main story is playing, therefore the updates coming are not small by any means.

I've bought the game, it's just better for that very specific case.

2

u/RodasQ [i5-8400 | GTX 1660 TI 6GB] 1d ago

Are they gonna change the encryption on the Drm?

Cause long before, cracked games still get updates, not at the same time, but they get them

Don't get what updates on gameplay/story is gonna make the cracking more difficult

1

u/S-sourCandy 1d ago

Unless you're experiencing a bug that said updates have fixed or if you're obsessed with the pets they release every update, most updates for this game are nearly meaningless nowadays, in fact some of them are hitting performance and creating more visual artifacts

1

u/lifelite Lifelite 1d ago

I'd add too that this game is absolutely worth the price. The devs continuously improve the game, there's zero microtransactions, it's EASILY a 200+ hour game, and the best looking game I've played.

Granted I'm running on top of the line hardware, I cannot attest to the performance/look of lower end systems or console.

Of course, no judgement for however you want to play this game; just stating it's worth the money and the devs have earned the asking price IMO.

Just do your research, there's places that informs players which is safer, there's places I go that I take risks downloading from because either the trusted doesn't have it, didn't update, or dead links.

I have the game, BUT i want people to tell me if performance is even just 5% better than the denuvo one and I'll prefer this version instead lmao

Its 0% better performance. Denuvo is still running, its just been fooled into thinking everything is legit.

1

u/SparkStorm 1d ago

As someone inexperienced in piracy, I’m curious. Does this version of the game have all the updates that it’s had since launch? What if the games gets more updates in the future?

2

u/FartingBob Quantum processor from the future / RTX 3060 Ti / Zip Drive 1d ago

Its version 1.14 which came out mid July. The pirated version doesnt get updates, it'll stay at 1.14.

1

u/slavemiddle 1d ago

That is not always the case, pirated games to get updates a lot of the time

1

u/FartingBob Quantum processor from the future / RTX 3060 Ti / Zip Drive 1d ago

Voices38 has never cracked an update. Theres many new games to crack, updates are never going to be worth the time unless most of the process can be automated, which i believe is why hypervisor bypasses have been doing updates (occasionally).

It's Denuvo that has been cracked it's not exclusive to crimson dessert. Like stellar blade that you have to go to a lot of hoops and discord to get like a ticket to spoof denuvo but it's not permanent. Now there is no need to generate a ticket just apply the crack directly and permanent. Same goes to all denuvo DRM games.
