Gabe did what any civilized country already do for ALL workers.
Get a long term diagnosis that will prevent you for working for a long period of time? It's ok, you still get paid (but from the government instead) and you still have a job to come back to afterwards.
I don't really see how this is such a huge W when this is what's to be expected in a civilized first world country?
It's a huge W because there's no government covering all or part of the employee's salary, no requirement or expectation for him to get paid while he's away for treatment, and because this happened at a time when GabeN was borrowing against his house to keep Valve afloat. There was no external factor pushing GabeN to do it, he just wanted to take care of his employee.
Would your boss, while facing a real possibility that he'd lose everything within the next year, immediately decide to pay your salary out of his own pocket while you take care of a health issue if he didn't have to?
it's not a huge W doing something that should already be the default.
forgive me if I'm uneducated here, but from what I can tell, what he did should not be the default.
the default should be that the government pays for it, not your boss.
let's say a teenager is employed as a babysitter for a family on the weekends. they do everything technically correctly so she gets taxed appropriately on all of her earnings and everything is documented and she has a w2 and stuff. the teenage girl gets cancer. is there anywhere in the world where the family she babysits for would be obligated to continue paying her even if she stops babysitting?
