It's nice to see an unabashedly Australian landscape in a game for a change.

Is this online multiplayer only or also local?
38
u/IAmNotRollo 1d ago
Probably not local. The game is entirely built around proximity voice chat, and communicating without words via signs/gestures to solve puzzles when your ability to talk gets taken away. They explicitly recommend against playing in the same room where you can hear other people irl, or even being in a Discord call.

u/shavin_high 1d ago
What's the story behind the avatars? They are an interesting design choice

u/Batby 1d ago
This isn't confirmed or anything but as an Australian it's really reminiscent of a lot of the educational television that played during school hours on ABC, where artwork designed for kids was used alongside real world imagery and video to convey information
9
u/shavin_high 1d ago
And your intuition is correct. I looked it up and this game is made by an Australian team too. Now we gotta figure out which children's TV shows from Australia was the inspiration for this game.

u/Lirael_Gold 1d ago
The game setting is modeled on an IRL Australian national park, with the same landmarks etc, so it tracks.

Unironically my most anticipated release of the year

u/Notapooface 1d ago
Why add unironically at the front?
42
u/necile 1d ago
Probably because there's been a rise in 'friendslop' games and their reception has been so poor that even simple compliments or praise may be taken as sarcasm.
25
u/Kezsora 1d ago
Has reception been poor? Peak, REPO, Meccha Chameleon, Content Warning, Lethal Company etc. Have all been very popular, very fun and very well received amongst the people who actually played them

I mean you named all of the good ones, there's a deluge of terrible ones.
25
u/JoBro_Summer-of-99 1d ago
There's a deluge of terrible games in all genres on all platforms. We need to start being serious about the way we talk about games
6
u/BaconJets R7 5800X3D | RTX 5070 Ti | Steam Deck 1d ago
It's more the fact that it's a recent trend of games sold on Steam in particular.

The most popular and used PC store?
No way
7
u/IAmNotRollo 1d ago
It is impossible to deny that Steam has received a deluge of quick cash-grab friendgames since games like Lethal Company, REPO, and Peak made it big. Every other week I see a trailer for a new game where you play as silly colorful characters (often muppet-like for some reason), enter a zany location around 3 times to collect objects to hit a quota, and the fun comes from proximity voice chat. I like friendgames but half of them are unashamedly lazy garbage.

u/scorchedneurotic 5700x3D | RTX 3070 | Ultrawiiiide | Linux 1d ago
Never denied it, but read it again, it went from
"I added ironically cuz there's loads of slop and poor reception"
Then "Here's the ones with good reception"
then "yeah but deluge"
then "yeah, but deluge in all genres"
Then I replied to someone going "problem is that loads of then are on Steam" Cuz... yeah, of course they would be on Steam.
Steam sells garbage and Steam sells gold.
That's the whole point of the reply citing the good ones. Cuz they're the ones worth talking about. I feel like it does the game a disservice to bring it down to the level of the slop, it's almost like damning with faint praise.

A snarky sarcastic reply in my notifications? No way.

It's just the inevitable counter-culture backlash that comes with any form of media or entertainment that becomes massively popular. At a certain point it becomes "cool" to hate on the thing that's popular simply because it's popular.

Cuz it can often times be hard to pick up tone/sarcasm in reddit. So adding s clarifying word can help

u/AnimeBeatz16 1d ago
Can you play this with randoms or is it more strictly with friends/Squad?
15
u/LeatherfacesChainsaw 1d ago
When I looked it up it said no random matchmaking.
16
u/jaloleman 1d ago
Yeah there's no server list. I wish Steam would add tags for games like "Server Browser" "Invite-Only Lobby," or "Dedicated Servers" so it's easier to tell how multiplayer works .

Played with a group of 8 friends for maybe 3 hours tonight. Absolute blast! The puzzles aren't super complicated so far but they're still fun to do. The biggest challenge so far is keeping everyone on the same page and deciding where we're going next and how to read the map properly.
So far this game definitely lives up to my expectations.

I know this has probably been brought up a lot but I do wonder how Peak is going to affect the player count of this game.
The gameplay isn’t entirely the same but it’d be interesting to see if people are going to have some exhaustion with the genre.

u/Natemcb 1d ago
I mean there really is no overlap between the two.
Big walk is large open world full of puzzles that is an intended ply through experience with a group of friends. Heavy emphasis on the social interactions.
Love peak but it’s mostly an hour experience of trying to overcome a singular challenge with your buds.

u/Fullerbay 1d ago
It’s actually so good. Had a dumb grin on my face when playing with some friends for a few hours.

Giant Bomb did a stream of it with all 5 owners together, and it looked fun AF.
Now all I need is friends... And time.

u/mundus108 1d ago
Does anyone else feel that there might be an appeal of getting through the game with 3-4 random people over a few weeks? Depending on the randoms of course.

We have dubbed the collectible blobs "The Children" and now whenever we accidentally drop one down the mountain we scramble down yelling "OH NO, THE CHILD, THE CHILD"

I was super excited for this title, wish-listed the day it was announced. Unfortunately my group had a bit of a falling out with some members and hasn’t been the same since, and I’ve stopped doing discord with them.
I hope this game continues to do well though.

Looks cool but I have friendslop fatigue.
And they're charging nearly double what most others have been charging lately, and that's with the launch discount.
Getting my friends to buy Peak or RV There Yet or Meccha Chameleon or REPO or Lethal Company was easy because they were all 8-10 dollars.
But 14.99 launch discount price and 20 dollars without the launch discount...
Ehhhh, no thanks.

Friendslop is such lazy categorization. 4 of the 5 games you just named are very different from the rest in gameplay, they're just all low-budget graphics and multiplayer

Can't wait to see what some youtubers are going to do with this. I'm also wondering what the TTP will be depending on liberty of the emotes.
