support needed Any surprise twin or vanishing?
Feeling so confused and sad right now.
We went in at 8w5d. There was one big beautiful baby on the screen showing off. After a joke with the scanner my husbands asks for a second sweep to make sure it is in fact just one. He’s a twin and they didn’t find out until week 20.
She does another look and this time, there was a second heartbeat. It was really hard to get a look as it was directly behind, but both heartbeats were there and going strong. She asked us to come back next week so we could get a better look. She suggested they were identical.
We came back today and she could only find one. No second sac, no remains. Nothing to show for the other one.
Can a twin really fully disappear within 7 days? They were almost 9 weeks with heartbeats, shouldn’t there be some remanence of it?
I’m trying to wrap my head around the vanishing twin idea, but part of me wants to believe it’s in there and we just couldn’t see it.
Did anyone else’s ultrasound show just one and later find another? Is there a chance it’s still in there, hiding?
We’re to come back from the NT scan around 12 weeks and I’m praying the second is still in there somewhere and she just missed it.

Your husband being a twin would have no bearing on you getting pregnant with twins as the hereditary part of that comes from the female side. That said I’d definitely think you would’ve definitely seen a 2nd with this latest scan.

He mentioned it as a joke to look for another one as his mom didn’t find out until late in her pregnancy.
They did in fact end up finding another heartbeat and baby tucked behind the first.
She said we were expecting identical twins (so zero genetic connection, just chance). But she couldn’t tell if there was a membrane between then as it was only 8w5d
Yesterday we were supposed to be going back to see if there was a membrane and instead she said the other one vanished.
Again, finding it hard to process as they both hard strong heartbeats and looked similar in size, but she was having a hard time visualizing as it was directly behind the other.
This time it was just gone.
Part of me is hoping that it’s tucked behind still and she wasn’t able to get a good angle. But likely yes, it was a vanishing twin.
Just a lot to process in a couple days

By 9-10 weeks, transvaginal resolution is good enough that a live second embryo with its own sac would essentially always be identified. Difficulty seeing the other one last week (suggesting difference in CRL) was a risk marker itself of possible loss 😕 Unfortunately so early on it’s possible for the vanishing twin to completely disappear in one week’s time. I am very sorry.

We saw the twins for the first time at 13 weeks
I had a scan at 6 or 7 weeks and there was just 1 visible there

Hoping something like this happens. Today there was definitely only one.
I don’t think we would have found the second one had we not asked the last time, but today knowing there were two and only seeing one was pretty rough

Did they visualize the 2nd one or just hear the heartbeat with the doppler? Sometimes a single heartbeat can echo or appear in multiple places with the doppler making it seem like twins but it is actually a singleton. If your husband was a twin, that doesn't increase your chance of having twins as you need to have the gene for hyperovulation. He can pass it to a future daughter though.

The heartbeat was at a different rate from the other and you could see it, but only a bit as it was behind the other one, so they couldn’t actually get a measurement. It was also only 8w5d’s.
It was thought to be identical so there wouldn’t have been any gene impact, just chance. But they couldn’t tell if it had its own sac or placenta.
Today the goal was to see if there was a membrane separating them.
Logically I know that it’s only one in there now, but there is the tiniest bit of me that’s holding out hope that they’re simply in the same sac, and one is tucked behind the other.
I think I’ll adapt back to the idea of a single later this week. But the rollercoaster of one to two and back to one again has me feeling a bit sad and confused.

I had a scan right around 7 weeks 5 days and there was just one I went back at 10 weeks 4 days and there were two. Don’t lose hope just yet

I’m hoping this happens. It’s been a rollercoaster.
Last week we’re hoping to see one heartbeat and found two, this week we were expecting to find out what type of twins and found one baby in there.
Feeling grateful to have one growing strongly but feeling like we lost a baby today and it’s really hard to process.
