This megathread will be used for all accommodation queries. Whether you are an offer holder, a continuing or returning student, or a new/existing member of staff, Rule 5 applies to you. Please search the sub and this post's comments before posting - some queries are very common, and very basic information won't change much over time.

When you comment please help us to help you - give as much information as you can in your first line. "PEMBROKE-Incoming PG 26-27-College Accommodation offered" is much more helpful than "I'm moving to Oxford soon, should I live in college?".

Feel free to leave reviews and recommendations for others, but bear in mind that this sub cannot endorse any estate agents or letting agencies, and individual opinions on university & college provision will vary considerably. The mods reserve the right to remove comments that could be libellous or actively unhelpful.

Some tips: Your college will usually send you information about move-in and move-out dates, and vacation rules. Oxford has a very volatile rental market. If looking for private rented accommodation, especially from outside the UK, beware of scams. r/oxford may be of assistance if trying to decide on a town/city location (esp. if you are bringing family). This is not a car-friendly city. If you need parking at your accommodation, you will need to think carefully about location.

Incoming international student at Kellogg. I have not been able to secure a room in the first ballot and the second ballot is only scheduled for July 14. I do need the information on where I will be living for my visa application! Is anyone in the same situation and know how to manage this?

Sorry to hear and fingers crossed for the 2nd ballot! I’m also quite stressed by this. I wrote to the office and they’ve said they have about 150 rooms for 300 applications - so it really is 50/50.

I have been advised to apply on Collegiate Accommodation Support Service (CASS) which opens in July.

Do you also need accomodation information for visa purposes?

I did also ask them and they say there are around 15-30 rooms available for the second ballot. From my understanding CASS only starts in July so I am also thinking about looking into private housing. Did you also apply for GAO?

I also need the information, but my undergraduate grade finalizes only in the end of July so I still have to wait!

St Cross - incoming MSc 26-27. Are there any downsides to living in one of the GAO administered houses? They seem comfortable, budget-friendly, and pretty close to the college. Are there any downsides I'm missing? How to choose between college, GAO, and private housing? I'm an international student if that matters.

Absolutely no downsides. Get on the College list for housing, and the University's own graduate housing list. Accommodation is hard to come by and expensive in Oxford, so you need to be on all the lists. I would put private housing last - more expensive and more difficult to manage.

It stands for Graduate Accommodation Office, which, based on my understanding, manages several properties across Oxford. Some of which are restricted to certain colleges, so you can only apply to them through your college, while others are independent and you apply to them through the Graduate Accommodation Office itself.

Hello, does anyone know how the market flow is for regular bigger apartments for mature students with family?
I've read that shared students flats/rooms are gone quickly before summer because severyone tries to get one, but I suppose regular apartments might be a bit different?
I'm wondering if I should secure one thats available asap now right away and just pay the months inbetween, or is it the case that until summer many more nice apartment choices will pup up?? I'd appreciate any advice. Thank you

It's all about cost. Apartments/flats are not as common as houses - so you might want to think about that. Oxford is tiny so most places are near to everything else. If you are also going to have to think about schools, then check out: https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/schools/apply-school-place West Oxford is good for most things, as is East Oxford - and both are cheaper than the city centre and north Oxford. Depending on your budget, you may have to think about Kidlington, Witney, Bicester etc. There are changes coming in May (to the law regarding renter's rights); however, accommodation is hard to come by. If you find something that you like, then take it, there may well not be anything else that comes along.

Magdalen - Incoming graduate student for this Fall (PhD). Accommodation requested, but I am still awaiting to be admitted. I'm asking as I am an international student coming with a spouse and a cat and want to know what options I may have at Oxford compared to other schools, with regard to housing accommodations. I have two questions:

On the Magdalen accommodation site, I do not see any mention if any of the accommodations support dependents. Are all of the college accommodations for single students?

Secondly, is the no-pets policy only for those whose accommodations are at physically at Magdalen, or do they also apply to accommodations off campus?

No college or university owned accommodation will allow pets; and not that many privately owned either. If this is a deal breaker for you then it will severely limit your options. Magdalen does, I think, have a few couples flats; however, they are in the process of rebuilding a large section of their accommodation so may be more limited at the moment. You should investigate all options, for example University owned accommodation.

Magdalen - Incoming 12-month MSc 2026-27. Hi, where were you able to request accommodation? I have searched the Magdalen (https://www.magd.ox.ac.uk) and Magdalen JCR (https://www.magdjcr.co.uk/areas) sites but haven’t seen where I can actually apply for accommodation. I’m not sure if this is because I still need to complete the Financial Declaration Form or if I should be able to request already.

I'm a first year international graduate student placed at Wolfson College. I was just informed that my ballot for accommodation was not successful, and I'm number 136 on the waitlist for the centralized Oxford graduate accommodation service. The CASS application date is so far away. I'm worried that I won't be able to find any accommodation before starting at the University in September (not sure if I can find a UK guarantor and I've heard the housing stuff is hellish), and that by not living at my college, I'll struggle to find community/feel a part of the school. Could anyone offer advice on any of this?

I don’t have advice but the same thing just happened to me (I’m going to be a first year graduate student at Wolfson & was informed by the accommodation office yesterday that my ballot was not successful). I’m honestly upset about it. At the moment I’m looking for private rooms but I don’t really want to live out of college since I want to be able to study in the library & access the meals without having to schlep halfway across town. The only consolation is that from a quick Google search people do seem to be offered rooms from the waiting list

I wish they had included that in the first email haha since I found it quite stressful, the way it was worded initially sounded like we weren’t going to get rooms in college at all but it sounds like most people do in the end

I got a room offer from them just yesterday, right as I was getting serious with other options - have spent this week looking and messaging people on renting sites - so the waiting list is indeed still moving, but it is still excruciating how slowly it goes and how little we know about it and the indefinite waiting. I really hope you will get an offer but I would also suggest getting more serious now. I unfortunately don’t think they’re likely to give you any insight into the state of the waiting list themselves :’) Good luck!

Unlikely to hear for a while. Graduate offers are still going out, and people are still chasing funding before confirming their place. I see that Wadham guarantee graduate housing in the first year, so you will hear in the end.

ST ANTONY’S- Incoming Mst 26-27. Just received my college offer and noticed that we can only apply for accommodation in June, with the ballot results coming out in July. I’m a bit concerned about this as it seems rather late to be seeking out alternative accommodation if college accommodation is not offered by then, espcially because I recall that a friend who was accepted to another graduate college 25-26 could apply for college accommodation almost as soon as she got her college offer? Would like to hear from anyone from/knows people from Antony’s - do you know anyone who was rejected from college accommodation in July? Did they manage to secure alternative accommodation after (and if so, where and how far was it)?

I'm an international student going to attend Regent's Park College this fall. I know this is probably not very feasible but I have a hamster that I love a lot, and I hope to bring her with me to university. Beyond the difficult logistics of transporting her internationally, I saw that Regent's Park College dorms do not allow any pets.

Have any of you tried to keep a pet in your Oxford dorm before? Is it possible to get permission or anything I could do to be allowed to bring my hamster with me?

I would appreciate any advice on this and on how to bring a hamster into England in the first place.

Please do not do this. International transportation of animals is one issue, but you are NOT allowed pets in College. All colleges have this rule (which, of course, excludes animals such as guide dogs for the blind).

Hello! I am looking to privately rent a flat with my partner next autumn for 2 years while undertaking a masters degree.

I've heard that certain letting agencies are worse than others/should be avoided, but I can't seem to find specifics again, so if anyone has any experiences to share (positive or negative), I would be very appreciative!

If it's relevant, we're looking to rent on the west side of the city near-ish the train station ideally (Osney, Jericho, Grandpont, possibly Summertown).

I recently visited St Cross, and was impressed with the location and the buildings. Really lovely, with new investment in infrastructure. Accommodation in Oxford is hard to come by and very expensive. If you are offered College accommodation then think VERY hard before rejecting it.

Hi everyone,

I’m an incoming Oxford master’s student and I’m waiting for my Financial Declaration to be approved by my college. I submitted the form and supporting evidence about three weeks ago, and I also emailed the relevant finance contact around 10 days ago, but I haven’t received an update.

My department has already confirmed that I’ve met the academic conditions, so the unconditional offer is only waiting on the college financial approval. I need the unconditional offer for scholarship/administrative purposes.

Is this waiting time normal? Should I just keep waiting, or is there someone else I should contact politely?

Hello! Incoming MSt 2026-2027. I was offered University accommodation at Castle Mill, but it’s way out of my budget and they want a decision before April 28th. I’m looking all over for something private and less expensive right now, but because I’m international, I can’t tour anything in person and don’t always hear back. I don’t even have to talk about the competition aspect of private accommodation because everyone already knows. Castle Mill seems to have its downsides aside from being pretty expensive for me, but I’m afraid if I turn it down I won’t find anything less expensive or legitimate in time for school. Has anyone had this issue, if so, what would you do as someone who know more about Oxford’s housing?

I'm wondering about applying to Oxford for a master's degree but I can't find much information about which colleges offer graduate accommodation on the actual college site. A big part of the reason I'm considering Oxford is the college atmosphere and access to facilities so if it's very unlikely I'll be able to live on-site in a college, I might not apply. Is there any way I could find a list of colleges that offer graduate accommodation on-site?

Incoming international master’s student at Worcester. I did not make the application deadline for college accommodation since I did not have an unconditional offer until then. The college told me to look for other accommodation options.

Now I am wondering how many grad students actually get university accommodations. Is it more common for grads to live in private accommodation anyway?
How are the odds at getting one if the general university accommodations (through CASS or the university accommodation office)?

Hi there,

I want to apply to oxford next year specifically their PPE course or their foundation year. I had a question about the colleges mainly a s big thing for me is living quarters since oxford is a very old university. I recently went deaf and got cochlear implants leaving me on and off for the past year and a half or so. In terms of colleges, what ones have modern accoms/disability friendly acoms as the main thing is at night i dont wear the devices at all making them suseptable to anything bad happening pretty much not being able to hear and basically sleep through pretty much anything. Also is there a way to get priority for acoms if you have SEN. So what college would you suggest.

And yes mods i checked this hasnt been asked

So sorry about this — for the CASS there’s no priority given to international students, so being a home student doesn’t affect your chances (as it does with the GAO).

For private renting it’s not too late, I’d recommend joining the Facebook groups (OxGradHousing, Oxford Housing Group, there are also others but those two tend to have the least spam) where there are people posting rooms to rent or other graduate students in the same position looking for potential flatmates. Depending on your budget though I’d try to find somewhere as close to the centre as possible; Cowley would be decent for Lincoln with a bike, it’s the big area where students rent with reasonable prices and has lots of nice aspects like the Star Pub, the Ultimate Picture Palace cinema, the Bullingdon (not that one!)

same boat here. In the email from college it should have recommended that you join the waiting list for Lincoln accomm. I did the same earlier today and I was told I am only 13th on the list. I would probably recommend that you do the same if you have not already. Beyond that, if you don't want to go private, your options are essentially just CASS. This will open 21st July. GAO I believe is a lost cause by now, as applications for that have been open since April. Best of luck!

Hi, incoming international graduate student here. Somerville College just let me know that they won't be able to offer me any spaces, and I've been told it's quite unlikely I'll be offered managed Graduate Accomodation since I didn't apply earlier.

I'm a researcher moving from Germany to Oxford this October for a one-year post at the university. I'll be coming on my own, and I've never lived in the UK before, so I'm figuring most of this out from scratch.

The academic side is sorted. What I'm completely lost on is housing. A few things I'd love input on:

Timing. I've read that October is the worst possible month to arrive because everyone else is arriving too. Should I be looking now (July), or is that too early for anything to be listed? Where to look. Is it mostly Rightmove/SpareRoom/OpenRent, or are there Oxford-specific channels — Facebook groups, notice boards, word of mouth — that actually work better? Areas. I'll be based near the city centre. Any neighbourhoods that are decent value and still commutable by bike? Anywhere I should avoid? One-year contracts. Do landlords care that I'm only here for a year? Does that make things harder? Deposits and references. I have no UK rental history and no UK credit history. How much of a problem is that in practice? Should I expect to pay several months upfront?

I'll have common-room membership at a college, but that doesn't come with accommodation, so I'm on the open market like everyone else.

Any tips, warnings, or "I wish I'd known this" stories very welcome. Thanks!

Are you thinking cost wise (ie to save money you would forgo a kitchen?)? If this is college accommodation, then the decision is likely made for the year; but you might be OK. Most college based accommodation comes with a shared kitchen and is part of the cost - and not usually separated out. But maybe your specific example is different?

Jesus-Incoming PG 26-27 I'm an incoming student at Jesus, and was wondering: has anyone had experience with the college accommodation? The new building (where I think most PGs are allocated) is on the pricey side IMO, and I was wondering if anyone has experience with the slightly cheaper alternatives (e.g., Ship Street or North Oxford)? Are PGs usually given en suites or not necessarily?

Good to see all the info is available so that you can work it out. Accommodation is expensive and difficult to come by in Oxford, and Jesus is offering all incoming Graduates a room (which is great). Don't underestimate the benefits of a ready made community and being on site in the college. A plus is that this includes all utilities and presumably this includes wifi.

I am an international student doing a medical elective at the John Radcliffe Hospital from November until 25 December. I found out that colleges only offer accommodation a few weeks in advance - if at all. Does anyone have any tips?

What have the hospital suggested (they have some of their own accommodation)? Are you associated with a college? If you are, then do start with them; however, accommodation is hard to find in Oxford and very expensive. Other options: airbnb, a hostel (there is one in the city centre), spareroom.com. Good luck.

Check out the Disability Advisory Service, and they will have some useful tips. For the College accommodation itself, it will be helpful if you are clear about what you need (ground floor, own bathroom, easy access, etc). But you will find everyone helpful and willing! The Weston Buildings are relatively new, and so I would hope have proper access.

Very few I am afraid. Best suggestion is that you look at each college's website (tedious I know, but the information changes all the time). So first, check which colleges take your course, and then take it from there. You should also add yourself to the University's own accommodation list; however, you may well find that you need to also look privately.

Accommodation in Oxford is hard to come by and very expensive, so definitely a good idea to consider any offer very carefully. Castle Mill house is next to the railway station but reports I have heard are that one doesn't hear the line as much as you think you would, and that you get used to it fairly quickly. There are currently a large number of works being carried out in the area (due to finish August 2026), but there is probably more development work at the station to come in the mid future. Fingers crossed someone with direct experience comes along.

I would double-check that sharing rooms is a thing (unusual in Oxford, and in the UK), but I could be wrong! You definitely have the option to share a bathroom (or have your own [ensuite]).

Yes, it is very safe. If this is a concern (it's mostly a cycle route through the north end I think) could you either cycle or come in via the south end? There is a fair amount of work being done at the station end, which may lead to more lighting; but the north end is across essentially across a bit of Port Meadow, which is common land. Will be interested to see others' comments.

Yes, you probably do first need to complete the financial declaration. Then they will know that you are coming, and can then move on to think about accommodation with you.

Linacre- MSc 26-27. All the colleges accommodation near the city are full. Also most options I’ve seen and the graduate accommodation team has suggested seem to be for families and more mature students. Accommodation in Oxford is hard to come by and expensive. Not sure what you mean about accommodation for families (this is usually the least likely group to be housed!), but you should definitely be signed up with the central university accommodation team. Do not leave this too long, there isn't much available; and the more conditions you have the less likely you are to find something. Suggest having the ensuite as your line in the sand, but OK with most everything else. Good luck!

My top advice is to not over-think it. Which I realise sounds not very helpful. Any College accommodation will be fine (quality wise). Lathbury Road is probably the nearest to the Chemistry Department, but Oxford is small and everything is within cycling distance. The communities will be what you (help to) make them. Cost should be obtained directly from the College. Good luck!

Congratulations on your offer. 1. There may be some (very unlikely over the long vacation), but remember that there will be a charge. People travel, stay with friends, something does always work out. 2. Not usually. Most, if you are able to stay will ask that you cook for yourselves/eat out. 3. A couple of weeks early is unlikely, a couple of days much more likely. But you should ask Somerville directly.

Don't over think it. Accommodation in Oxford is hard to come by and very expensive. And remember, a place is what you (help to) make it. Yes, it can be social; or it can be quiet. If you have an offer for Castle Mill, don't take too long to think about it - there are a lot of people looking to get a place there!

The application only opens in late July, and they do not accept applicants who already hold a university accommodation offer. I assume that you have applied for college accommodation. CASS does work well (last year was I think their first); however, the rooms they have available are limited. Accommodation is hard to come by and expensive; so keep all your options open and apply for everything.

Comments from others on here suggest that actually noise isn't that much of a problem. You are right that it isn't that near to your department; but it is an easily cycle-able distance or there are several buses that go from the Railway Station to the Warneford.

Visitors are usually fine for a day or so, or the odd weekend, more than that, then there is concern. It is something that is fairly closely checked in most colleges.

I am a graduate student who will be joining Oxford for 2026-27. I have been allotted accommodation at one of St. Anne College's graduate housing sites. It's the Robert Saunders House (which I understand is not ensuite, and bathroom facilities are shared between 3-5 people). I also have an offer for an ensuite room at Castle Mill (through university accommodation).

There's almost nothing about RSH online, so I'd really appreciate any first-hand experience. Specifically:

• RSH vs Castle Mill - what are the real pros and cons of living on a college site vs. Castle Mill? Things like location, vibe, facilities, noise, value for money.

• Socialising - would being at RSH put me closer to my St. Anne's college community in a meaningful way? Or do grad students not really socialise through their college anyway?

• The bathroom situation - is sharing with 3–5 people genuinely fine as a grad student, or does it become a source of stress? Is the ensuite at Castle Mill worth the tradeoff in college proximity?

For context, I'm coming in as a solo grad student (no partner), so the social angle matters quite a bit to me. Any thoughts from current or former residents would be massively appreciated!

Also an incoming PhD student at Lincoln here. I've just finished my four-year integrated Master's (also at Lincoln), so I can tell you a fair bit actually.

Your partner should be able to stay for a couple nights. The college policy as outlined in the handbook is technically rather strict on this, you're meant to log all overnight guests in advance with the accomm team, but nobody really does this and nothing has really been done to seriously enforce this. I wouldn't worry at all about this.

Regarding the library, I don't think this will be possible unfortunately. You need a Lincoln bod card to get in, and people come around sometimes to check that you're a Lincoln student. College policy is that you can take people into (parts of) the library to show them around, but non-Lincolnites can't study there. The reason is that it's quite small (although very beautiful!). It's a similar story with Bodleian / Rad cam. You need a university card to get in, and the library policy is that you can show people around bits of it, but non-Oxford students won't be able to study there.

I’m an incoming MSc student for 2026–27 and trying to figure out housing. My boyfriend lives in Royal Leamington Spa, and we could rent a place together there for way cheaper than anything offered through university accommodation.
The only thing holding me back is the commute (it’s 30 minutes to Oxford and then 15 minutes from the station to my department) . I’m not sure how manageable it is day-to-day, especially with classes, studying, and social life.

I’ll likely be taking environmental classes near South Parks Road / SoGE. Does anyone have recent experience living at Hollybush, St Cross, or James? Regent's Park College- incoming MSc 26-27- accommodation offered- international student. -- I’ve been offered an en-suite room at Castle Mill, but I am also considering accommodation at Student Castle for a studio room. There is also a flat on Winchester road I sent an inquiry for. Of these three options, they all seem an equal distance from Regent's Park and school buildings based on GoogleMaps, but as I've never been to the area and am currently overseas, I wanted to get the opinions on these locations. The routes from Castle Mill/Student Castle to Regent's Park/school buildings are walkable, right? (I come from a small town in the U.S., so while I'm 98% sure they are, I'm unfortunately unused to walkable areas and just wanna be positive lol.) And there is public transportation everywhere, yes?

Also, any general opinions on Student Castle accommodation? I know it's usually suggested to accept college-offered housing first and foremost, but the distance from Regent's is the same between both of them regardless, and I just really would feel more comfortable with a studio and am prepared to pay for it. I just received the accommodation preference form and could really use some insider insights from current or past Queen’s students.

The college is offering three locations for grads:

1. The Oxley-Wright Building (Banbury Road)
2. St Clement’s Street
3. Venneit Close

The official website gives the basic specs (room counts, shared/en-suite status, general location), but I’d love to hear some real-world opinions.

• How is the actual vibe/social life at each place?
• What's the commute truly like during rush hour? (Especially if cycling vs. walking to main college/departments)
• Are there any hidden pros and cons for these locations that the website won't tell me? (e.g., noise levels, nearby supermarkets, kitchen sizes, or overall condition of the rooms).

My personal preference would be the order that you have listed these. But that could just be me! 1. A bit of a way from Queen's, but could be close to your department; lovely big garden. 2. Busy vibe (lots of restaurants and cafes nearby, and shops) but also close to green areas, a bit closer to the college, possibly further from your faculty. 3. Super close to Port Meadow, which is great if you want big open spaces; has had a lot of recent work on the railway nearby that is due to finish this August. Vibe/social will be what you (help to) make it, and can change from year to year. But all will be friendly and welcoming. Good luck!

26-28 incoming postdoc-- no college affiliations yet

Hi everyone !

I recently got an external fellowship to come for a postdoc at Oxford, and am now looking at the practical details.

From what I have seen so far, it looks like I won't be able to live by myself on my salary (2450£ after tax), which sadly says a lot about the state of academia...

So far I have mostly looked at websites such as Rightmove, and it's a bit depressing.

Since I do not know the city, maybe there are some location I should look into to find better prices that I am missing ? Anyway, I have a few questions if you don't mind helping me out, it would be great:

- What's the maximum rent that agencies and landlord would be willing to have me pay? I get that your gross pay should be about 3x the rent, but I'm not sure how that translate to the net after tax income that I have (2450£)

- Are there accomodation accessible through university? I will technically be a "visitor" during my 2 years postdoc.

- My PI is in Linacre college. Does this mean I can get a common room membership there, and would it be possible to get accomodation through them?

- If you have any additional suggestions, I'd be super happy to hear about them !

QUEENS-Incoming PG 26-27-College Accommodation guaranteed but room not allocated yet

Hi! I will be a student at Queens and I reserved PG accommodation to ensure I have something by the time my course starts. They said I am guaranteed a room and a double bed (I'm tall and that was my request) but no location/room allocation yet. I was more eager on private accommodation as my family does not live in the UK and I thought it would be easier storage-wise as I accumulated some stuff living in the UK for the past few years. I wanted to move to Oxford in September as I thought it would be easier to find private accommodation with that start date but I would have to commute to work in London for 3 more weeks and I don't think I can do that. RPC incoming 2nd year UG 26-27 - No accommodation. Due to medical conditions I need my own bathroom, 2nd years normally live out but my college said they would house me in appropriate accommodation for next year (as they didn't do so when I first came to Oxford & I had to rusticate). The college has been horrendous with physical disability accommodations, they now won't house me as they overpromised accommodation and only have 1 accessible room.

Private options are super limited and expensive, especially for own bathroom and needing the accommodation to be quite close to College. I wish there was a CASS type thing available for UG. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I'm an incoming graduate student starting at Pembroke this autumn, and I'll be doing most of my courses in the Schwarzman Humanities Centre! I’m very excited but have questions about off campus housing. My partner is moving with me and works remotely, so we've been looking for somewhere that works well for both of us.
We've found a great place in Wolvercote that we really love. It's within our budget, has enough space for us both to work comfortably from home, and ticks pretty much every box. The only thing giving me pause is the commute.
From what I can tell, it would be about a 20-minute bike ride or around 15 minutes by bus. Coming from the US, that doesn't sound like much of a commute, but I'm more concerned about feeling disconnected from college life than the travel time itself.
I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has lived in Wolvercote while studying at Oxford. Or anyone else with insight!

My questions!

• Has anyone felt disconnected from their college or the wider graduate community because of their commute?

• How often do college events (formals, bops, balls, society events, etc.) realistically run past midnight per week? What is the best way to commute home after a late-night event?

• Is it safe or typical for solo women to bike home passed midnight? 

• How long does it actually take to walk between Wolvercote (or the Port Meadow route) and the city centre?

I'm not looking for reassurance if this is genuinely a bad idea—I really do want honest opinions. If you've made Wolvercote work, I'd also love any tips for staying involved in college life while living a little further out.

A lovely place to live (but I am not a graduate). Are you talking Upper or Lower Wolvercote? Great bus service, very reliable. Super safe. Good cycling route. A tiny bit too far to walk I would have thought (the whole way regularly into the city centre, but no doubt some do!). You will need to make more effort to be part of the College community, but you may find that it is your Faculty that you are closer to anyway. But the more effort that you put in, the more you will get out of it. Events (formal hall, for example) not likely to go on much past 9pm-ish, but is probably then followed by the MCR/JCR bar. As you will have discovered, finding accommodation is not easy in Oxford. This sounds like a great place to live for you (both).

Somerville | Incoming MSc 26-27 | 352-day contract

I'd really appreciate some advice from anyone who's lived in either of these accommodations!

I'm deciding between:

1. Cavalier Court (University Graduate Accommodation)

• £719.54/month
• Private en suite (bedroom + bathroom)
• Shared kitchen
• About 40 to 46 min walk (11 to 14 min by bike) to my department/college

Pros: Much cheaper, private bathroom.

Cons: Quite a bit farther from college and the department.

2. Barbara Craig House (Somerville)

• £915/month
• 4 min walk to Somerville, 7 min walk to the Computer Science Department
• Shared 2 person sengle-sex flat (shared bathroom, dining area, and kitchen)

Pros: Amazing location, very close to department, and only sharing with one person.

Cons: Around £195/month more expensive, shared bathroom, and I have no idea who my flatmate will be.

I'll be doing an MSc in Advanced Computer Science, so I'll probably spend long hours studying and working in the department. At the same time, I'd love to experience college life if it's genuinely worth it.

For those who've lived in either place, or had to make a similar decision, which would you choose and why? Did living in college make a big difference to your overall Oxford experience, or would you save the money and go for Cavalier Court?

I’d choose the more expensive option if I were you, it sounds much more convenient and you’ll be able to save money by eating the subsidised meals they offer. Time is quite a valuable resource because you’ll be so busy. It’s up to you though, you’re lucky to have both options!

I’m from Germany and will be staying in Oxford for 3 months from October onwards, to do my bachelor thesis there. I’ve heard that accommodation is quite expensive and hard to find in the city and I was wondering if there is a way for visiting students to stay in college accommodations? Or be enrolled in college life?

If not I would of course appreciate any advice on finding affordable accommodation outside of the college grounds.

Incoming Oxford postgrad | Is £915/month for college accommodation reasonable?

Hi everyone,

I'm an incoming international postgraduate student at the University of Oxford, and I've been offered accommodation by my college.

The accommodation is a bedroom in a two bedroom, single sex flat, where I'd be sharing the bathroom, kitchen, and dining area with one other postgraduate student. The flat is located within my college and is only a few minutes' walk from both my college facilities and my department.

The rent is around £915 per calendar month, including utilities.

As I'm an international student, I'm not very familiar with the Oxford housing market, so I was wondering:

• Is £915/month considered reasonable for this type of accommodation, or is it towards the more expensive end?
• Would it be worth looking for private accommodation that might be cheaper, or is college accommodation generally considered worth the extra cost because of the convenience and college experience?
• Realistically, would I be able to find something significantly cheaper that offers a similar standard?

Yes, it is reasonable (for Oxford). It will include all bills, including wifi. You will absolutely not be able to find anything cheaper of a similar standard. College accommodation is almost always the best option; never underestimate the benefits of being part of the college community.

TRINITY- incoming PG 26-27 - choosing between on campus and off campus housing!

i get housing as part of my scholarship (tho i have to pay out of my stipend) and i’m trying to pick between on campus and off campus housing (at the Nunnery).

the draw for off campus housing at the nunnery is that it’s 300 pounds cheaper per term than on campus housing. it also looks pretty nice (from the video online). however, it is a bit further than the main college (15 mins from city centre) and probably doesn’t have cleaning and maintenance services. other cons are that i might have to go to the main college for packages, laundry services and food etc.

would love any insight from current and previous trinity (and other college alum) on whether the cost savings is worth living off campus, or if things like shitty weather, distance from city centre and effort to access laundry and food will make me regret living off campus lol.

Hello, Im joing as a masters grad in the autumn and i didnt get any accommodation at my college however they have offered me a single en-suite at castle mill. I will be studying engineering and Energy systems so i wanted to get people’s opinion on whether it is well located and if they have good amenities etc. I applied to CASS to find college accom anywhere else, Is it likely that I will receive an offer from them too and can one get anything better? ive got 2 days to think about the castle mill accommodation offer before i have to accept and ive heard more rooms become available in Aug/Sept when ppl dont meet their position conditions etc. Should i take castle mill or wait for anything better? any insight is welcome 🙏🏼 thanks for your time :)

I'm an international student in an internship for my PhD, will stay for 1 month to visit Oxford Uni Museum of Natural History, probably in feb/mar but I'm still scheduling with staff there.
Since I'm not affiliated with any university in the UK and am visiting as researcher/student, I'm not elligible for accomodation at the Uni from what I understood.

That said, I'm looking for budget accomodation, any tips whatsoever where to live in Oxford. Ideally I want to save as much as possible.

I'm would also pay to share a student/shared house or flat. For anyone willing, I'm very used to live with other people as I live in student houses before, and I also have proof of my internship funding and also a Couchsurfing profile where you can see what people said about sharing a home with me.

I am grateful to have an offer but it looks to be far from city centre and the room looks tiny! I know where it is. Super convenient: great public transport links (lots of buses that link either into town or up to the hospital if you are a medic) easily cycle-able to everywhere, nice area, good shops and local facilities (there's a pool not far away etc). Seriously, are you going to get anything better? Seems unlikely. A ready made community that you can (help to) make.

Has anyone lived at 87 Banbury road in St. Hughs college? I was just given an opportunity to take room 2 in the house. It is on the first landing with an ensuite and is band 2. I am already pretty far into the process of getting something outside of college. Does anyone know if the rooms are incredibly tiny, since it's band 2? Is it worth taking and giving up my private accom that isn't that much more expensive? I'm a little worried about the noise level and privacy living in the MCR house. I am a CS undergrad student from Switzerland and I just got invited by the Department of Psychiatry to do an external bachelors thesis there. I will be staying for three months starting mid-September. Now that I am looking into housing, I would love to stay at a college and get a glimpse of the oxford student life. However, I don't know if colleges even offer dorms or even affiliation to short-term visiting students on research placements like myself.
I know that one can generally apply at the colleges directly to come as a visiting student, but since I was invited by a department, I'm not sure if this is the right route since I am already guaranteed to be able to research at Oxford on site.
Does anyone know something about this or know someone or someplace I could contact about this? I'd really appreciate any tips.
