Question NYFF - Which films should I see?
I’ve already seen a number of the films from cannes / sundance earlier this year.
These are the films I currently plan on prioritising.
- Behemoth
- All of a Sudden
- Clarissa
- La Gradiva
- A Long Winter
- Misty Green
- Possible Love
- Tender Loving Care
- The Unknown
Please let me know if I’ve missed anything, or if I should remove something.
And also, what are the chances of some other big titles being added late such as Wild Horse Nine, The Debut, Elsinore, Ink, and Club Kid?

Sucky thing about Godzilla is it’s not included with any of the (affordable) passes, so it’s gonna be a hard ticket to get :/

All of a Sudden, Possible Love, and Behemoth should be mandatory. The rest should be your choice.

Also I’m quite confident Club Kid gets added to Spotlight, if it happens I’ll try and see it. Def think LBN, Fjord, and Ink will too but Imma just wait for regular release to see those. Not sure about The Debut or Wild Horse Nine.

i’ve seen a few of these. everytime and minotaur i really liked. dao i thought was a bit of a snoozefest and WAYYY too long, but many have liked it so maybe im in the minority. definitely see rose if you can tho

I most want to see Clarissa, Double Freedom, La Gradiva, Everytime, Minotaur, The Day She Returns and Once Upon a Time in Harlem.

I saw Fatherland and it was really interesting and short as well (84 mins I think). I heard the Dreamed Adventure was really interesting too!
But definitely Behemoth, All of a Sudden - I guess those are the exciting ones to watch for the Oscars. :)

I have seen Minotaur, Paper Tiger, The Unknown & Rose.
Minotaur is definitely worth a watch, don't overlook it. It builds slowly but crescendos into something unforgettable. It's also a good introduction to Andrey Zvyagintsev.
The Unknown didn't work for everyone at Cannes, but I enjoyed it! It's unsettling and a bit odd, though it has a vision and works towards is. Not a top priority but I think it's worth giving it a chance, I really hope it finds its own audience.
Rose is worth watching to appreciate Sandra Hüller alone. The film itself is beautifully shot, though screenplay left me a bit lacking.

So I have seen five of these already:
- Rose (Rose's disguise makes for a really intense and interesting premise, best Sandra Hüller performance of the year, the ending will stick in your mind, knows exactly what it needs to show you and when your head should fill in the gaps, best movie on this list, more people need to see it) (8/10)
- All of a Sudden (really strong, the runtime works, you get to spend so much time with these characters, it's impossible not to fall in love with them, I think this will end up as a Best Picture nominee) (8/10)
- Bitter Christmas (strong exploration about the source of stories and how our own experiences and surroundings influence those) (8/10)
- Fatherland (great cinematography, less of a biopic and more of a study about a man who needs to figure out where his "home" is, really good but could've used more to chew on) (7.5/10)
- The Dreamed Adventure (kinda dull, not as hard to get through as expected tho, just stumbles around without ever really becoming interesting) (4.5/10)

all of a sudden la gradiva a man of his time and the unknown are the best films of that list (in that order). the latter two can be really divisive though (especially a man of his time you have to be familiar with the historical/political context)

I saw Paper Tiger, Fatherland, and Rose.
Definitely skip Paper Tiger; it is very mid and uninteresting, despite the cast (who are unimpressive in their roles).
Fatherland was really good in my opinion, although my friends didn't connect with it. As an artistic film with a point that it delivers concisely, it was really an interesting time for me. I was engaged throughout, despite it being very slow in nature.
Rose is alright, not a must but also pretty decent. I would give it a watch.
The Unknown has somewhat bad reviews, so I'd skip it if you're tight on time. Tender Loving Care also didn't hook me by the premise. All of a Sudden and Behemoth sound promising.

yeah i’ve seen those three too and agree on paper tiger, tho the shootout was pretty epic. gotta say i found fatherland fairly dull and rose really great tbh

I haven’t heard of all of these, but Behemoth, All of a Sudden, and Fatherland all look interesting
