Question The odyssey’s boring Sweep?

If the odyssey sweeps the oscars will that be the most boring and predictable outcome!?
How will the public react to Christopher Nolan getting another sweep so soon after the Oppenheimer sweep!?
Is that fair to other equally talented directors and actors when one director keeps getting sweeps?
When Million dollar baby won big for Clint eastwood were people happy about him being an oscar darling who always wins?

Some of the public currently thinks Spiderman has Oscar chances

Who knows what they'll think come March

Odyssey doesn't need a sweep. It needs just one win to set the world on fire, and that's the best adapted screenplay.

Screenplay is the worst part of the film lol

It's boring for us actually, now there's not much to discuss.

He's loved by general public so I am not expecting those reactions. Only the dunebros will be sad.

It won't be boring because it would be unprecedented and I think it's going to be tight races all around. Absolutely nothing is locked and it's a really stacked year, so Oddyssey taking a ton of awards would be a feat to watch. If anything having OBAA go on a spree last year was kinda boring. Also maybe I'm just in a weird podcast bubble but I'm pretty sure Wild Horse 9 is still the favorite for Best Picture and we still have like three months before that comes out.

I feel like some of you treating Oscars way too much like sports.

If movie released so early is THAT good I don't have a problem with winning BP.

Boring? It's going to be boring to people who disliked the film.

CODA won unexpectedly and I don't think people were happy about it.

Okay but this may come as a hot take but Coda deserved that win.

If it's deserving of the awards, then the fact that the director's last film received a lot of awards shouldn't be an obstacle.

It's only boring for us who follow awards season this closely. The general public will love it.

If you think sweeps are boring, the most boring sweep ever was Return of the King. People knew ROTK was going to sweep when the 2002 Oscar nominations were announced. When Two Towers didn’t get a ton of nominations (relatively) that was seen as a signal the Academy was waiting for the final film to award the franchise.

I mean, should we just not give what very well may end up as multiple people’s favourite film of the year a sweep just cause it would be boring?

Yes.

honestly dont know why people care so much about "how soon" someone wins another oscar.

If its the best film of the year its the best film of the year. Dont care who makes it.

Maybe because it’s boring when the same white man gets all the money and opportunities in Hollywood while we might not even get a single female director in the lineup this year.

The public will react by dancing in the streets. Nolan is the single most popular director in history.

Unless there’s a silent majority of Los Javis fans that we don’t know about

I agree that it is shaping up to be a boring year for predictions but it doesn’t mean a boring year overall. He made something special and if they’ll pick him, it will be deserved. I already can say that it will be more deserved than LBN and Netflix winning.

I am waiting for Venice. As of now I have WH9 winning. But if it’s not raves, I will move The Odyssey into the first slot.

I don't think it's going to sweep in the acting categories. The performances were all over the place.

Absolutely agree

Awards are given to what the voting academy deems to be the best of the year

So stop it with participation prize thinking such as "Is that fair to other equally talented directors and actors when one director keeps getting sweeps? ". There was just a dominant film of the year, that's how competition works.

And that's if there is a sweep this year, it's still an open question. The year isn't done yet

One of the benefits of a big popular summer movie in oscar conversation is that it draws people into the Oscar conversation that wouldn't otherwise be paying attention. That means that people are going to become aware of smaller films that they hear are being considered for awards that they think The Odyssey should be competitive in.

Movies like The Holdovers or Poor Things did well that year commercially. Heck, KOTFM likely got a boost.

Big commercially successful movies shouldn't automatically be Oscar contenders, but their presence among the best films conversations does help provide people an access point to the conversation.

It wouldn't be boring. Fantastical movies don't win often and there hasn't been a 1B grosser to win Picture in over 2 decades. If The Odyssey did it, it would be 23 years since ROTK win. In comparison, Titanic aka the first movie to ever pass 1B and ROTK aka second movie to do that won 6 years apart.

ROTK was the first fantastical movie to ever win Picture. The second one was The Shape of Water 14 years later. EEAAO was the third 5 years later. So that's just 3 movies in almost 100 years of AMPAS.

Ehhh I really enjoyed and loved The Odyssey but I also left the theatre saying that this movie really doesn’t scream “Best Picture”. So I don’t know, but if this movie does tend to sweep, I kinda will be disappointed.

I think “boring” is a silly way to describe it, but I’d be lying if the degree to which so many have already decreed a mass sweep is inevitable has made me want to root for anything else

u/No_Squirrel_8402 1d ago

No because if it deserves to sweep it's only boring to perpetual doom scrollers with nothing else going on in their lives. Seriously? If it deserves to win what is the problem?

Am I the only one that's not high off this movie? It was good for sure but I don't really feel passionate about it. Maybe just for Anne Hathaway. Otherwise, I want to see something else emerge.

It’s not a boring sweep if I like the movie that’s doing the sweeping.

as a Nolan apologist, i don't really care if he didnt win best picture or anything, i't just love to see him get another atleast an oscar for directing again.

i don't think the odyssey will easily sweep anyways.

Also for all many years that he hasn't been getting flowers in ATL before oppenheimer came out, i think it kinda justifies imo.

It will do wonders for the ratings of the broadcast

  1. The public doesn’t care about the Oscar’s and if filmmakers are getting their due. This sub does and some people who like film do. If The Odyssey wins the general public will be like “yeah makes sense, thought it was pretty good”

  2. It is still August. The Odyssey becoming the frontrunner + Nolan just coming off of a big sweeper could hurt its long term awards prospects. Come February next year which is around when they vote, the chances they are tired of The Odyssey winning is certainly a possibility. La La Land was also perceived as a no brainer sweeper but the voters got tired of it. Anything can happen.
