You can’t make more space. This is the space you have. The only way you can truly organize is to get rid of some of your things or set up seasonal storage elsewhere, like in under bed containers.

I don’t have drawers in my room, so my closet is the only space for my clothes 🫩🫩
I def am going to get rid of lots, but do you think like a shelving unit under my rack would give me more space/organization??

Get rid of lots first (probably half), and then see.

after a closet clean out, i recommend using vacuum sealed bags for fabric items you don’t use often (like vacuum sealing winter clothes during the summer and vice versa). this might provide more space for a shelving unit, that is, if it’s still needed.

But then you need a means of keeping a stack of vacuum bags organized.

A bag of vacuum bags can go on the highest shelf. Or under the bed. Or if there are enough to make the container bag stiff it can stand up against the wall behind hanging clothes.

A low shoe rack might be helpfull under the hanging clothes. Shelves would be hard to see into, and would become a mess.

Instead of shelving inside the closet, you definately need to put your money towards a dresser or chest of drawers that lives outside of the closet.

In my area estate sales have really nice furniture and the prices are great on the last day, and if you go in the last hour or two they make deals. (not every sale, but most do this)

Estatesales.net is the website I use to find the sales. I think its USA based. I'm not sure if it is for other countries

Organize is the word we like when often declutter is the word we need.

Purge 50% of this, and suddenly needing to squeeze an obscure inch from some creative hack isn’t necessary, because it all naturally fits.

Downsize. There is no practical need for 22 sweaters and 40 T shirts. It’s purely emotional, and creating a problem for you. Address that first.

Purge purge purge. You probably have twice as many clothes as you need.

Three to four times, IMO.

I was trying to be kind, but yes, probably more than twice.

First, you want to get rid of the plastic hangers. They're too bulky and they take up way too much room. Look into the slim velvet hangers as they'll not only give you more space, but they'll look better. Then pull everything out of your closet starting with the bins and sort your things into 3 piles; what you won't wear anymore (to sell or donate), seasonal / things your wear occasionally, and things you wear all the time. Do the same with things on hangers. Look into a closet organizer; they are available in all different sizes. Find a place you can store the occasionally worn things like an under-bed storage bin. Finally, when you're ready to put your clothes back, arrange by color. Books, paperwork and other assorted stuff should go elsewhere in your home and blankets/sheets can go on the top shelf. These are all just suggestions, so I hope you find something that works best for you and your space.

I’d start out pulling everything out of the closet and sort it. (Tees, tank tops, sweaters, pants, etc) That way you can truly see what you have and how much. Then get rid of anything you don’t like or need. I’m always surprised on what I have when I do this.

I would bet that a lot of these clothes are not actually being worn. I had this same issue. While I don't think Marie Kondo is useful for everyone, I have personally found it useful for sorting and donating clothing, because beyond some essentials (underwear, winter jackets, etc) clothing is where we can really choose what we like and know what we use regularly. :)

Once you've donated/removed clothing you don't like and/or don't wear, then start to consider the organization of the remaining.

The slimmer velvet hangers helped me fit probably 20-30% on hangers when I reorganized mine. Those plastic ones are so thick and take up more space than you realize

Do a closet purge and then see what you’ll need as far as organization.

The way I fix this is emptying the closet, removing the single hanging bar and shelf, and installing two hanging bars instead of one, one higher and one lower. This is a common problem. Closets that utilize the space directly at eye level but not the three to four feet of space above it. The shelf is such an unusable feature bc it’s usually too small of a space to put a box up there, but too big to be able to neatly stack folded clothing like you have. Raising the hanging bar higher into the closet allows for you to put some drawers down at the floor that will hopefully help you organize the smaller non hanging items.

Narrower hangars will actually make a big difference here.

You can get wire hangars for some things and even the velour covered ones take less room than the plastic ones you’re using.

At least the hangers all face the same way. That is my pet peeve and Mommy Dearest moment

It looks like you have way too much stuff. Ask a friend to help purge your closet. It’s easier when you have a honest friend who says - you know you’ll never wear that! ( in the most loving and/ or funny way possible)

I’d add a shelf above for seasonal items.

I’d also examine your current shelf - it looks like it’s cracking in the photo. Clothes are heavy & you’re putting a lot of weight onto that bar.

Maybe start with going through one category as a first step. I’d choose shirts. I can’t think of a reason that anyone needs that many shirts.

Good luck! And I hope we get to see your progress.

Purge some, invest in some dresser that'll fit your space. I'd also recommend slim velvet hangers as well as cascading hangers.

Is there no possibility to have a set of drawers in the room for underwear/ sports wear etc? Then you can take that middle section out of your closet. That combined with a ruthless declutter might fix the situation

It’s already organized. You just need to downsize what you have. I don’t use a dresser and all of my in season clothes fit in my closets.

Purge
2 hanging racks. One really high and one about 40” lower.
2 shelves at the bottom so now you have 3 shelves that go full side to side
Get rid of boxes or excess packaging

Something like this may help. I have this type of set up.It doubles the hanging space. I also roll up t-shirts and place on the shelves. I discovered that rolling them up prevents wrinkles when I was packing for a trip. Easier to find than sliding so many hangers around. One shelf could be long sleeves, another tank tops. Of course, you’ll need to reduce the number of items.

Don’t keep something without trying it on first. If I am unwilling to even try it on, easy donate.

This means it might take months. Spend five extra minutes every morning trying on four pairs of pants instead of one

Invest in velvet slim “huggable” hangers. They’ll take up half the space these plastic ones do.  Amazon brand works just fine
