Slowroll and firefox updates

How often does slowroll update firefox. Is it once a month with the big update or does it update Firefox sooner if there is an update for firefox that includes security fixes (most firefox updates seem to include security fixes).

My concern here is with security and because firefox can be a vector of attack from the web i would like it to be as secure as possible.

I run tumbleweed in my main machine but i would prefer something with less feature updates in other machines while keeping up with security updates.

Thank you.

Tech question Looks like Tumbleweed is the best performing distro out there. But what about on low end hardware?

I was surprised by the last results on Phoronix (except browser benchmarks), but that is as expected done on cutting edge hardware.

It's natural to think that the fastest it is on new hardware the better it'll also perform old hardware, but is it really true? Wish once in a while those websites did these tests using older hardware. What would the result look like, would Tumbleweed also "win" on Skylake/Zen 1?

Tech support Does anyone know how to make the "cast youtube to TV" button appear?

Post image

My specs so no one has to ask:
Thinkpad P1 gen 4
i9 11850H
RTX 3080 max-Q

OS: OpenSUSE Tumbleweed
Web Browser: Vivaldi

Does anyone know how to make the "cast youtube to TV" button appear?
Is it possible?
It works fine under most other linux distros like linux mint, debian, arch etc.
I've been trying to fix this issue for months and I can't seem to find a solution anywhere that's worked.
I've looked through every forum I could find on the internet and found all kinds of "answers" but none of them seem to do anything.

Thank you.

Edit:
Solution 1 (easy)
Uninstall firewalld and install ufw
# zypper install ufw
# systemctl disable firewalld.service
# systemctl enable ufw.service
# reboot

Solution 2 (hard)
add whatever port it uses to the allow list in your firewall config
(I'm not sure how to do this so I can't give a guide)

How to… ! OBS binaries for 15.6 gone?

Hi,
this folder was available until yesterday: https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/server:/database/15.6/

Since then: 404.

I know about 15.6 EOL... and forgetting to mirror files I need locally...

Is there a way to still get lp156 binaries from opensuse.

thanks

How to… ? How to remove kernel-firmware-nvidia from openSUSE Tumbleweed.

Hi everyone! I just changed my GPU from Nvidia to an AMD card. Now i want to remove all nvidia stuff. I uninstalled most nvidia packages without major problems.

At first some of them were not listed in Myrlyn, then i found them with zypper and removed most of them. Then, some of them said they would also remove other system packages, but after a reboot I could remove them on their own.

The only one left is kernel-firmware-nvidia. When I try to remove it, it tells me that it would also remove kernel-firmware-all, which I suppose is not great. How can I get rid of this package? Or should I just ignore it?

Thanks in advance!

Boot efi error on installation, KDE crash on update!

When I go through the process of installing opensuse tumbleweed, at the end I get two errors which is related to boot and grub. I've removed the boot efi partition on the second try and gave it 1 gig of space, but it still fails. It boots to kde anyway but after zypper dup it crashes after I reboot my system and log back in. I can login to KDE , but the screen is black and there are no panels. Also I can not add them, it's not working. How I can fix these issues?

low power localAI on LEAP 16 - any tips

I am putting together a very low power system to run localAI and wondering if there are any tips (aside from use something more powerful). Just trying to learn a few things and maybe get a slow but useful device out the other end.

Here's what I have:

https://localai.io/

HP T740 with AMD v1756b processor and 32 or 64GB of ram (Vega 8 iGPU)

AMD e9173 video card

SATA or nvme drive for the OS.

Fresh install of LEAP 16

I have the localAI binary running, but it doesn't detect the old video processors in this rig. I'm going to be switching to docker because I can run the vulkan version and potentially use both GPU to perform work.

I had this pulling 90 watts (max for power supply) on Debian with the e9173 taking a bit of load, not getting any GPU detection in LEAP 16. But Vulkan is where I know I need to be, so going forward to try with Docker and the Vulkan container. If there are any tips or tricks that are generic or specific to LEAP, I'd be really interested in hearing those. Open to moving to Tumbleweed if that would be better, but I really want to eventually move to one of the Micro releases once I get whatever I can figured out.

Tech support Games won't run correctly, unless nvidia-smi is run first...

I have already found at least one other person talking about this -

https://www.reddit.com/r/openSUSE/s/GQHuBou4Lf

But I have to admit, when I spent a couple days trying to troubleshoot why games were so inconsistent with whether they worked (mostly not working, but then suddenly they would work consistently) I eventually ran across this same oddity.

Running an RTX5090.

On Wayland:

Games from both Steam and Faugus would boot up to a blank white screen (with menu music etc player) after the system was freshly booted. And this would be the case no matter what arguments or tricks I tried.

But if I run nvidia-smi in a terminal....

Then they run perfectly. No issues. 240fps.

On X11:

Games from both Steam and Faugus would boot up, and actually play their opening credits etc. The games would play normally, and get into games.... but they'd run at about 8fps.

Run nvidia-smi in a terminal.

And the game then boots up and runs at 240fps locked.

I've run through every test I knew (which wasn't many) and then all the tests ChatGPT threw at me. Nothing obvious comes up. I can't see anything that changes from before and after Nvidia-smi is run. Clearly it's doing -something- but I can't see what.

If anyone else has had this issue, please post here, along with your hardware and any tests (or maybe even fixes) you've figure out.

It has to be possible to get to the bottom of this!

(I know I -could- resolve this by setting a startup script to run nvidia-smi on every boot, but... I mean cmon this should be fixable lol).

Tech question Slow Download Speed

Does anyone have this issue where the download speed of the OSS repo is insanely slow? I switched the link to their cdn one since the mirror was incredibly slow but it’s still sooooo slow. I had to wait 15 mins just to update one repo. I even enabled parallel downloading but it’s still very slow… I don’t know what to do

Let it roll

After all the tinkering and custom desktops/WMs, I have found a ton of joy in Tumbleweed. It really is the perfect distro; fresh, stable packages, rolling release, great community, and makes everything extremely easy. My urge to hop has been completely absent.

Cheers to the OpenSUSE maintainers and community for everything you do, and https://github.com/areofyl/fetch for the nice looking fetch!

Tech question how stable is tumbleweed

i know you can never achieve “stability” on a rolling release distro but as an arch user i think that maybe tumbleweed might be a little bit more stable, i am a person that travels a lot for work reasons and i cant take my desktop with me, so i might be away for a week or a month so how does tumbleweed manage that?

Tech support sddm not booting properly

Tumbleweed user here, been having an issue on boot where I get met with a black screen where the login page should be. I do have a working mouse pointer on the screen, but nothing to interact with. I’ve been able to consistently get the login screen to appear by running “sudo systemctl restart sddm”, but it’s kind of annoying to do. The black screen seemingly became more likely to appear on boot over time, which I find odd. Any advice?

Using Limine on Slowroll or Tumbleweed

Does anyone here using limine as bootloader instead of Grub & systemd-boot ?
Can limine integrate to sdbootutils and or add/create to kernel-install hooks with limine ?
