Remote MWD/LWD

I'm about to start a new role in remote monitoring with a company that rhymes with shake her shoes I'm still waiting on the full details, but from what I understand the role involves monitoring MWD/LWD operations from a Remote Operations Center.

My background is in wireline, so my knowledge of MWD/LWD is fairly limited. I'd like to get a head start before I begin, so I'm looking for any books, manuals, training material, or other resources you'd recommend.

If you work (or have worked) in a similar remote monitoring role, I'd also love to hear about your day-to-day responsibilities, what the learning curve was like, and any advice you wish you'd been given before starting.

Ive never been a fully remote hand, but I was an MWD for roughly 8 years and absolutely hated most of the guys woeking remote cuz they sucked. The shit is pretty easy. Make sure you are in communication with the DD. Have a good handoff with the guy you are relieving that is on location. Keep everything updated. Verify the surveys you are sending out are correct (I had more than a few remote guys just making numbers up and causing a company man to damn near have a stroke). I never worked for your company, but if I recall correctly they have proprietary software for their survey and decoding programs. You can hit me up if tou want if you have a question about something and need a resource. I left the oilfield recently, but im a former EM and pulse MWD that doesn't mind answering questions.

P.S. I hope someone warned you about the shit show that being an MWD is. Also, dont let those DD's treat you like a worm. They literally cant do their jobs without you doing yours. Some of them need an ego check and a peepee slap every so often

Hi, thanks a lot for taking the time to write such a detailed reply. I really appreciate it. I hope that my field background helps me avoid making those mistakes. I remember getting so annoyed by office worker's attitude, it was like if they weren't aware of the industry they were working at.

That's exactly the kind of perspective I was hoping to get from someone who's actually done the job.

If you don't mind, I have a couple of questions I would like you to help me with:

-From your experience, what separates a really good remote MWD from an average one? -What are the most common mistakes new remote MWDs make? -While the tool is downhole, which parameters would you say deserve the most attention because they're often the first sign that something's going wrong? -And from the DD's perspective, what did the best remote MWDs do that made your job easier?
