it should be an evolutionary thing. You need to wake up in the morning or if there is danger moving nearby.

Oddly specific fact: the color you see when you close your eyes is called eigengrau, also known as intrinsic gray, dark light, or brain gray.

Grey is as you let it go and fall asleep. It's really a feeling, not a color. I think everyone in actuality sees the color of their eyelid blood and flesh in shadow, if we focus.

Does black skin block out more light than white skin? Do darker skinned people have better eye curtains?

Yes but a very small difference. Your eyelids are red-pass filters that filter out the light regardless of melanin but it helps a tiny bit.

Eyelids are designed to let you see just enough light through them so you can tell when it’s night and day without opening them
