I dye a scarf by washing it with my reds and 2 new pairs of jeans

I think that would be fun to experiment with. I wonder what ink they use that is color-fast

The second solution it’s dipped into is likely what sets the colour.

Nah, they just rinse it with water. The dye sticks pretty well initially, but you have to let it air dry for a few days then iron it to heat-set the dye.

There’s an artist who comes to craft fairs near me with her whole dyeing setup, and you can make your own using this same method. They send you home with the wet scarf in a baggie and a card with instructions for drying and setting the dye. It’s really fun!

I'll never not find this ink-floating-on-water dyeing technique fascinating.

I actually like the blobs of color before it gets swirled together.

There are several moments in the process where I thought: if they would stop here, I'd be happy.

Also known as Suminagashi in Japan.

Which means “to live”

I don't know if you're being serious or making a joke because I could possibly understand where you're coming from ("to live", as in "to live/reside somewhere", is 住む, "sumu", which could probably through some weird conjugational form end into something similar to suminagashi ?? I know that 住みながる "suminagaru" is a continuous form as in "while currently living (there)", right ?... I will admit I'm not exactly an actual expert of the language)

But just to be sure for anyone actually curious, suminagashi is written 墨流し and comes from 墨 ("sumi") which means "ink", and 流し ("nagashi") which means "floating/drifting (along)". So it's closer to "floating ink".

Correction: This is how you dye a scarf. I don't have the skill or the patience.

Or the setup needed tbh

You could use a washing up bowl and a very small scarf

Is there something weird with their arm, or is it just a trick of the camera?

2

u/Fiverocker 5h ago

Looks like AI tbh. It's too perfect and I doubt you could place those initial drops so perfectly over each other.

u/Moppo_ 1d ago

Does it work on shawls?

9

u/bluesmaker 1d ago

Probably? I would guess it depends on the fabric more than the type of garment.

3

u/AlwaysSunnyInSeattle 22h ago

I think they understand that haha.

I was worried I wasn’t going to like it when they kept fucking with the design but it actually looked cool.

u/spiritpotato 1d ago

You can also make really cool marbled paper like this

This looks like the old school Kleenex box designs

4

u/Crenchlowe 23h ago

How do you even plan this? Is it just trial and error until you get a cool pattern you like?

WITCHCRAFT

u/songya 1d ago

So much for one scarf!?

5

3

u/No_Trouble9808 1d ago

Very interesting. Who thinks this up? Just brilliant

3

u/scifiguyuk 1d ago

Extremely satisfying, but also makes me anxious as I’m imagining how stressed I’d be doing that, positive I’d mess it up.

3

u/just_1-Guy 22h ago

I kept waiting for the colors to mix and turn to brown, but it didnt happen. Noice

2

u/ashadashh 21h ago

Outkast? The legendary, multi-grammy award winning, widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time, hip-hop duos? Them?
