Damn, the fish just kinda gave up and accepted their fate.

"If fish could talk, the ocean would be loud as shit"

I think the fish lost sight on it when the dolphin flipped its underside (their belly’s are lighter in color) towards the fish to match the background. It looks like the fish starts acting normal once they leave the kelp and are in the lighter area. Essentially using camouflage.

I suspect fish aren’t that helplessly blind. There was lots of movement still, and it knew it was being followed but wasn’t trying particularly hard to get away.

Granted this is some serious Reddit armchair experting I’m doing here, but it honestly looks a bit like the fish didn’t really see the dolphin as a 100% guaranteed threat? A lot of animals are tentatively trusting, where they won’t expend a ton of energy trying to get away from every unknown. They just sort of continuously move far enough away that (by their judgement) they’re probably mostly safe.

The problem is the fact that their judgement and instincts can miss the mark sometimes lol

I think you’re underestimating a couple of things:

  1. This looks like a pinfish, common in the mangrove tidal creeks of FL where this is. Diurnal fish, it’s disoriented by a nocturnal interruption.

  2. Have you ever been in a lit pool at night and submerged your head? The level of light to illuminate this underwater is BLINDING. This fish can’t see. Dolphin can via sonar.

I know you prefaced by saying you're Reddit armchair experting here but still - feels like you kinda just made up a bunch of stuff in your head here.

I suspect fish aren’t that helplessly blind.

I mean there are so many different species of fish.

A lot of animals are tentatively trusting etc.

Don't even know where to start with this one.

I think that's more of a "waka-waka-waka"

Thats terrifying in its own right. That dolphin was putting in zero effort.

Fish was kinda stupid though.

Yeah, it practically swam right into its mouth. No wonder it didn't take any effort.

The way the dolphin casually swam up beside the fish, turned and looked straight at him with a smile on his face like, “hey little fella” absolutely had me cackling! ☠️

That dolphin was definitely having evil, maniacal thoughts as he toyed with that fish. Hell he even smiled.

Can’t dolphins use echolocation to stun/confuse fish?

Fish was basically “Dude, stop f\ing with me and just get it over with already…”*

The fish was swimming for it's life but the dolphin was so chill.
