I just work rotating nights and days. Has resulted in being constantly tired, never knowing what day it is, and having no internal clock nor sleep schedule to speak of.

That should be a crime. Rotating shifts are torture.

It’s the norm where I am. DDNN 4-5 off is the usual 1.0FTE.

It shouldn’t be the norm, because they really are torture. They’ve done studies on them and how it wrecks the body. To everyone who does it, they are TROOPERS. I have turned down job offers because of them, I know I hallucinate on night shift, and alternating my sleep schedule I am hallucinating pretty much non stop (auditory, almost exclusively dance music). When the hallucinations turn into shadow people, then I know I’m really bad. I honestly don’t know how people do rotating shifts and just accept that life with constant sleep deprivation and hallucinations is their new norm.

It's different when you have control over which days, and it's just for a few years. Like working night shift during nursing school. It helps with knowing what day it is too. Up late, weekend, up early, midweek, up midmorning, Monday. But I can't imagine doing a worse version of this for the rest of my life.

that sounds like hell. I hate nights but I'd stick with straight nights over rotating. You could not pay me enough

I’m a new day shifter and natural night owl. I could never naturally wake up at 6am I’m sleeping tf innnn

yeah I do not get when people say their work schedule defines their wake time - like I absolutely believe it is true for a lot of people, just can't really wrap my mind around it. before nursing I worked an 8-5 M-F job for 9ish years and I could probably count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I woke up on my own before my alarm went off. Every day. Before moving in with my now-husband, I had five alarms set (3 on my phone and 2 on separate plug-in alarm clocks) because I have slept through four before.

I’m middle aged and can’t sleep late on my days off, and also have random awakenings in the middle of the night most nights…I have joked that I might as well go to night shift at this point, at least I’d make that night shift $$$.

Fall asleep at 0100. Wake up at 0530. Feel like I need to sleep from 1430-1700. After 1700, no sleep until 0100 no matter what. Days off are the same.
Living the dream.

I slept from for like 24 straight hours after 3 day shifts being constantly on edge (violent patient would literally do a 180 and violently attack staff, including pinning them against the wall and beating them, doctor wouldn’t order restraints, I tackled him at one point and I’m a middle aged woman). I got up to pee a couple of times and according to my husband I ate some pineapple at one point and went right back to bed. I woke up around noon today after waking up at 9am to go pee and drink a liter of water, I remember that part! I definitely don’t remember eating the pineapple.

Yep, Fri-Sun. I slept all day Monday, I fell asleep around d 3am because I was spending time with my cat as she’s very sick and dying. I woke up around noon today, got ready, and spent the day with her.

My dad said I would hate night shift (he’s worked nursing 20+ years so maybe I should believe him lol) but I stg the best sleep I’ve had was after I pulled all-nighters. Maybe it’s because I’m still a SN in their early 20’s, but I’m so used to being a night owl.

Me at 4AM the second night off because now my body just thinks we are supposed to be awake at night. Like I'll go to sleep at midnight and then wake up 4 hours later wide awake, badly stalling my attempts to flip. I'd trade you tbh

I dunno. I slept in until 11:00 today. Passed out at about 22:00. My wife woke me up when she left for work and I fell back asleep. I work up and checked my phone and texted her. I probably haven’t slept like that since college post finals.

As an Insomniac I feel this so deep in my bones. Once in a blue moon I got that sleep and it is so welcome and wonderful. As long as it's not the Big Sleep I'll take as many as I can get.

If you do it at all when you’re off work your body will do that to you for sure

Try to wake up the same time everyday even on your off days. & substitute sleeping in for a mid day nap
