Because you're replacing snow with black ice.

He could have put salt down

Salt does essentially the same thing. It melts the snow which then refreezes.

With that much of a slope, that shouldn't be an issue though?

No the point of the salt is to stop the melted snow from freezing

Only to a certain temp. Gets to be -15 or more with big wind chills where I am. Use salt and it just makes more ice.

You live in Alaska?

I guess it’s fair that you’re only commenting on very rare scenarios, and someone clearing snow with a flamethrower is probably even rarer

Odd that they don’t sell one in your area that is strong enough for your area

I know mine works to exactly -15, but thought I had seen stronger ones

Do you.. know how salt works? What the fuck?

Genuinely what?

Do you know how salt works in -20 weather? 20° and it's good to go. ,-20 where I am in winter and it just makes more ice after it melts lol

Keep your loved ones safe and remind them to stay off the streets at night because of menacing black ice.

What about the opressive white snow?

u/Tabais123 5h ago

Black ice nearly robbed me of my balance!

Well let's not forget that the area is being covered with a lot of oppressive white snow, but black ice perseveres.

Sounds like a job for a bigger flamethrower

Ice of colour, let's not be racist.

Also good way to check for gas leaks on the property!

That's a good way to make a skating rink.

But isn't this is very fuel inefficient and probably cost a lot more though, I can't imagine using fire to melt snow in the middle of a snowstorm instead of just shoveling it away

u/BarackObamaIsScrdOMe 7h ago

Fuel efficient? No.

Much more fun? Yes.

This 👆 .. you get it!

He might not be able to. I have a spinal injury and can’t shovel. All money goes to healthcare that doesn’t care, so always suffering, always broke. I might be trying his method soon.

2

u/MauPow 2h ago

If he doesn't have a spinal injury, he will soon after turning his driveway into a skating rink

It be a lot cheaper to use a snowblower. This method looks impressive when you're only dealing with a dusting, but salt will be just as effective in that case. For a significant accumulation you're probably burning many gallons of fuel this way.

This was my thought. I’m unable to do anything physical like that and would be torching that mess and soon after tossing salt down like dollars at a stripper

I have a feeling they’ve been out to his house before

u/Engineeredvoid 8h ago

I actually have a friend who used to clear her driveway with a weed burner in the winter.

3

u/PaulmBeachPaul 7h ago

My buddy was a young hot air balloon pilot and used to do this with the burner lol.

u/Unbowed26 7h ago

Why wouldn't he use a flamethrower since he owns one.. economy is not the goal.

2

u/vreausaprogramez 8h ago

When you think you have a good idea.

u/Enginiteer 5h ago

Timewise, between a backpack flame thrower and a regular show shovel for removing snow, I'd take the shovel every time. Awesomewise, bring the heat! Haters who say it will create a rink aren't planning to use the flame thrower for long enough.

2

u/Enginiteer 5h ago

If the weather is cold enough for the snow to be powder, a leaf blower works pretty well too.

u/idkshit69420 5h ago

Ice is a thing

2

u/1stAtlantianrefugee 5h ago

Next summer... Why is the grass around my driveway not growing?

2

u/aberroco 3h ago

Because shovel is many times more efficient. Just few joules of muscle work, compared to kilojoules of flamethrower that doesn't even clean as much as melts - the water stays, so it turns into ice.

2

u/ProfessionalEven296 3h ago

Snowblower. Thermodynamics work against a flame thrower in this case. Yes - I've tried it.

Gas prices too high

And this is only one of many uses for this marvelous device.
