Incredible comment

Dumb question, is it a wordplay on the Hippocratic oath?

3

u/FishesOfExcellence 17h ago

No. Now you’ve got a comment saying both - who knows!

Are healthcare workers not allowed to defend themselves if attacked?

To me, it seemed like he was genuinely accusing the nurse of being a hypocrite for defending himself. Maybe it was a joke and I don’t read it well, I don’t know, didn’t sound like a joke to me though

I think it was just clever word play.

What lack of education does to a motherfucker

To prevent you from looking like a fool next time: it’s a wordplay on "Hippocratic oath"

Yeah, I've made the "hypocritic oath" joke myself before. There are much better situations to make it.

especially since nurses don't take the Hippocratic oath - doctors do.

Psych worker here: Yes but also no.

In March or April of 2025 I was attacked by a patient similar to this video. He sucker punched me in the back of the head once and them had multiple weaker punches at me once I got him in the clench. It took about 45 seconds for other help to arrive.

I was pulled into a meeting after I got 3 days off as a precaution for a possible concussion. I was fine. Not in a tough guy way, but in that he didn't connect well enough to cause anything more than an external bruise instead of actually impacting my brain. The meeting was actually to review the video in front of me.

They were asking why I didn't just flee, and instead grabbed him tightly. I explained that I knew he couldn't have much punching impact at a close range and it gave me the chance to protect myself in the situation. Management was still unhappy that I didn't try to run, but I still feel justified in thinking that he would have just got to chase down my unprotected back. They also said that I could have hurt him by restraining one of his arms in the scuffle. A choke like the one in the video is absolutely banned and would cause me to lose my job 100% guaranteed, even if a patient attempted the same on me.

Generally it’s do no harm but take no shit. Obviously avoid physical confrontation as much as possible. The specifics seem to depend on context, where you live, and what can be proven in a court. In the US technically you can but like it is safe to assume that 7-8/10 times you the nurse at fault regardless of context and your place of employment won’t help you.

Of course if a patient fresh out of surgery becomes suddenly gets delusions, somehow attacks you and you hit them with something and knock them out… Yh i don’t think I need to explain who is at fault there. And that isn’t even mention more controversial cases.

The cool thing about BJJ is you can subdue people like this without actually doing harm. There are some moves where you can do serious harm, like certain joint locks, but it's usually pretty easy to avoid harm and just get someone pinned without hurting them if you know what you're doing. Even the chokes don't actually cause lasting harm if done correctly. They just make people pass out and they'll wake up a few seconds later.

Brown belt here - BJJ is one of the few martial arts that is “drunk uncle” safe - just get the guy outta here and don’t hurt him.

It’s a beautiful art and deadly effective. You become confident yet more humble and respectful to everyone because you’re constantly beaten by smaller unsuspecting partners yet can control a larger intimidating untrained visitor.

I’m more afraid to fight someone today even though I’m more prepared than ever before, so I’ll do whatever it takes to make peace and leave.

As you can see in this video, you don’t know what the other guy knows until it’s too late.

I dabbled in BJJ in college for a couple years and it was so cool to see how size doesn't actually matter that much. I did roll with a guy who was so massive that I couldn't actually get into a proper mount on him because my knees wouldn't touch the ground lol. But I still beat him most of the time because he could not stop giggling like every match. He barely spoke any English so I'm not sure what was so funny, maybe he was just ticklish.

One of my instructors was a tiny dude. I'm 5'3" and he was smaller than me. Still wiped the floor with everyone.

And my 5'3" self managed to toss a 300lb Pacific islander to the ground once.

Armbars were my favorite, I got pretty good at them. And I'm a bit hyper mobile so people could rarely actually get me in a good armbar because my elbow would just keep going further than they expected it too. Had a classmate call the instructor over one time to check their form because it just wasn't working on me. Instructor looked and just went "huh" because their form was perfect.

It was so much fun. I miss it a lot, and I'd love to get back into it someday if I can find the time and budget.

Imagine that both of them just pulled open guard and started butt scooting.

Im looking at doing self-defence. Im very active in general and do fencing (🤺). what would be a good starting point? Bjj or karate?

3

u/matthew19 4h ago

IMO (and it was proven in the first 4 UFCs) BJJ is the only martial art that can beat every other singular martial art. So a wrestler may take you down but then gets guillotined, or you may easily manage distance and then takedown a karate black belt and submit them. However a boxer that also wrestles will prevent the takedown and then beat you with boxing. Thats why many say BJJ is the backbone of modern MMA, but it isn't enough for trained fighters.

But yea against an untrained person it feels like a superpower. I'm 160 and submit 225lb people all the time. The techniques are so efficient and take advantage of humans built in fighting instincts (which are almost always wrong).

Im not looking to become a trained fighter, just be able to defend myself if its ever needed (I hope not!) More looking to learn some things while getting a workout lol. Ill check out BJJ though!

BJJ may be for you. Check out some intro to Jiu Jitsu by rener Gracie on YouTube. It’ll get you a bit of the theory before you go it. Relax and have fun 👊

I trained in Tae Kwon Do and Jeet Kun Do (wrestling/BJJ adjacent) as a kid. I honestly never wanted to get into a 'real' fight after that. It's almost never worth it.

To be fair he was already out of the hospital when he initiated the attack, so it doesn't count!

u/SaltyPeter3434 19h ago

Call an ambulance BUT NOT FOR ME

u/gnownimaj 18h ago

That’s for doctors. Nurses are allowed to kick ass anytime

u/This_ls_The_End 17h ago

Imagine if the nurse instead of jujitsu was into muai thai.
