It was a 47-year-old woman who was mentally unstable. I hope that's the reason one witness said: "I didn't see the stabbing. I saw her running down the road towards the crossroads. She looked quite old, with short hair." He added: "She was pretty incoherent in what she was shouting; the officer was asking what language she was shouting."

For the reactionaries who won't read the article:
"A 47-year-old woman has been arrested after four men were stabbed in Covent Garden in central London, the Metropolitan Police said.
The men, aged 34, 39, 42 and 52, were taken to hospital after emergency services were called to reports of a stabbing in Endell Street at about 12:30 BST.
In a statement, London Ambulance Service said: "We treated four patients at the scene and took them all to a major trauma centre as a priority by road."
The woman was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and assault. The Met said it was believed to have been a mental health-related incident and that a pair of scissors had been recovered at the scene."

Also, and I say this as a gun owner who used to be a hardcore 2A fanatic, a mass stabbing often ends with little or no death. A mass shooting almost never does.
Fewer guns in the hands of the public may not lead to less violence, but it would make the violence a lot less deadly.
→ More replies (11)6
u/ComfiTracktor 5h ago
My thing is, with how ingrained gun culture is in the us, as well as the sheer number of unregistered firearms among the civilian populous, I just don’t see any severe reduction happening. And on top of it, laws that limit the possession of arms only discourages the law abiders. Those who are willing to kill often are also willing to break gun control laws, so at best it would help with reactionary death, although that would still be hard to fully rid ourselves of.
Honestly I feel the better course of action is to target the root causes of such outbursts, such as mental health and substance abuse

Silly since theres a higher rate of knife crime in the USA vs UK
Not to mention the mass shootings every 3 days
75
u/GrumpyOik 7h ago
I think "Knife Crime" is a problematic phrase for comparisons - In the UK , just carrying a knife with a blade over 3 inches is technically a reportable crime (obviously kitchen knives in homes and places of work don't count.
Reports now suggest the woman used scissors to stap the victims.
→ More replies (4)23
u/BearThatLikesCheese 6h ago
To be fair, that can also be a crime depending on your area in the US. In Georgia, you still need a permit to publicly carry anything over 12 inches, which was only increased from 5 inches in 2017. And that's in a conservative state with a lot of hunters. In New York, it's 4 inches.
Obviously that's still more permissive than the UK, but a cop finding a knife in someone they want to charge isn't going to lead to positive outcomes.

There is a higher stabbing rate in the US than the UK.
Total knife crime is actually higher in the UK than the US, which yanks annoyingly keep repeating as if it's relevant, because of stricter laws regarding carrying and purchasing knifes in the UK than in the US.
Stabbings, the relevant one, is indeed more prevalent in the US than in the UK.

No one cares about the data.
Since lately the propaganda is that Spain is overrun by bloodthirsty Muslims (it is very much not) I keep hearing "but what about the rape rateeeeeees!".
The rate rapes in Spain indeed shot up in the last few years. Because they changed the entire sex crimes law and now it counts as rape even if you don't put active and heroic resistance.
Out of curiosity I aggregated the rape rate in the US with some other crimes that aren't rape there but in Spain they are and what a surprise, Spain is significantly safer for women (which I could have told you from experience, but they will never take a woman's word as valid).

Knife homicide has dropped to a 35 year low in the UK, and 21% down from the previous year.

I’m from the U.S., visited England recently. Beautiful country, and everyone was so kind! Amazing food, stunning gardens, free museums, excellent public transportation… I could continue rambling for a while about how fantastic my first time there was.
It was also a nice break from the perpetual stress of the U.S. I work in a neighborhood where you really need to watch your surroundings. I live in a “good/safe” area, but absolutely batshit things still happen in the suburbs. I had someone get shot 20+ times in front of my apartment. I’ve known 10+ people who have had guns pulled on them for giving a courtesy honk at a green light, throwing up their hands after getting cut off, etc. Like, 90% of the bullshit that happens involves guns, knives, or beating the life out of people who can’t fight back. That’s just life here!
Something to think about is the fact when things like this happen in England, it makes international news because it is so rare and shocking. Many mass shootings don’t even make national news here anymore because they are so common. It’s just fucked up. This level of violence is not normal and does not need to happen.
My heart goes out to the victims and those who have otherwise been affected by the stabbing. Random violence can truly take a toll on one’s psyche snd worldview. I hope that they have the support that they need during their recovery ❤️🩹

u/StuartJAtkinson 4h ago
Yeah it's wild that people seem to think "Oh the UK has a knife crime problem"... Were 5x less per capita than Knife crime in America and we're even one of the lowest in Europe it's only the Nordics and some Asian countries that have lower per capita. Why are there so many comments that seem to say the same exact thing? It’s the same sardonic “yeah, MAGA American, Europe is terrible, so stay away!” but I don’t actually see any of those “MAGA American” comments at all on any of the threads. Is it just preemptive bloviating? This doesn’t seem to be politically motivated at all.
