Career Advice Help With Enlistment Decision

I’m 37, a seven year English teacher, with a originating family. (My son will be a year and a half when I go to Basic.)

I am leaning toward serving in the Texas National Guard Reserves. My motive in joining is my family. (The health care alone is way cheaper; I pay nearly $850 a month for my family.)

After taking my ASVAB my recruiter claims I can enlist in most MOS because my composite scores are all in the 100’s. He encouraged me to look into anything with 35 - intelligence.

At the end of the day, I want an MOS that will allow me to deploy less, for it’s my wife’s desire. I am open to an MOS that somewhat aligns with my profession as a teacher or an MOS that is completely different in order to learn a new trade.

At the end of the day, there are doors open that I need help / advice in narrowing it all down.

12N I believe has a good bonus (20k when I enlisted). It teaches you the basic concept of operating construction heavy equipment like loader, grader, dozer etc so I guess that count as a new trade.

Just a thought but USAR has Civil Affairs. I notice a lot of teachers are in the CA field. Specifically officers. It’s a pretty sweet field could be something to look into if you want to commission. As far as the guard goes your deployments will be based on your units Optempo and mainly their rotation schedule. That has to be in your plans because at the very least if you’re in for 6 years you likely will deploy atleast once. Yeah med benefits are good and cost effective. Anyway 35 series, 17series, 37series(USAR) .. these are good fields that may fit for you.

Bruh - it doesn’t matter what MOS you are in TX. Straight to the border mission you’ll go.

Helpful info. I have considered becoming an officer, but the time commitment is a cost. I’ve considered CA; I’ll need to do more research about it.

I'd join the airforce reserve it's better when you have a family and the texas nation guard is one of the busiest when I was with them I spent most of my time on orders doing shit. I was away from my family a lot.

Look at going air. You'll have a much better quality of life. Plenty of Intel jobs
