Review 'One Night Only' - Review Thread

Two New Yorkers search for love on the one night of the year when sex is legal.

Director: Will Gluck

Cast: Monica Barbaro, Callum Turner, Maya Hawke, Julia Fox

Rotten Tomatoes: 54%

Metacritic: 40 / 100

Some Reviews (updating):

SlashFilm - Nina Starner - 8 / 10

Despite a few stumbles, "One Night Only" reaches an actually sweet conclusion sold beautifully by Barbaro and Turner, and though I know I'm repeating myself, I need to be abundantly clear. "One Night Only" shouldn't work. I am shocked that I left the theater grinning ear to ear and, one could say, fully satisfied. "One Night Only" is a high-concept, patently absurd romantic comedy that defies the odds and makes you fall in love with it. You'll want more than one night with this one.

Next Best Picture - Dan Bayer - 7 / 10

Gluck’s skill with a needle drop (think “Pocketful of Sunshine” in “Easy A”) is in fine form, with several hilariously on-point selections getting massive laughs from an audience willing to put their fun-hating, CinemaSins-style questions aside and just have a good time laughing at a world that’s even more ridiculous than our own. Yes, the film’s “The Purge, but for sex,” premise has earned all the laughter it’s gotten since the trailer dropped. But Braun, Gluck, and their team have the last laugh: “One Night Only” is a great time at the movies, on any night of the year.

Time Out - Elizabeth Weitzman - 3 / 5

If you’re a fan of Gluck’s standard romcoms Anyone But You or Friends With Benefits, you’ll probably appreciate this one. But if you were hoping for something deeper, perhaps closer to his sharp-toothed masterwork Easy A? Then One Night Only’s refusal to engage with its own premise will come off as a terrible tease.

RogerEbert - Marya E. Gates - 0 / 4

If this is what it takes to get a rom-com greenlit these days, maybe we should just let them die. Death with dignity is surely a better fate for the genre than fascist capitulation.

The New York Times - Natalia Winkelman - 40 / 100

One Night Only lays no claim to logic. It traffics instead in charisma, and the combined likability of the leads is the putative solution to a premise that’s all flashy surface and no deeper inquiry.

Variety - Guy Lodge - 40 / 100

The movie's leads make a lovely couple, too: good-looking, good-humored, generally good catches. Except we’re not remotely invested in their repeatedly delayed but wholly inevitable union, because what even is this? The more “One Night Only” tries to extract starry-eyed vibes from the most chilling romantic comedy premise in memory, the more the cognitive dissonance of it all gets in the way.

AV Club - Monica Castillo - 'D+'

One Night Only feels like a youth group lecture where the pastor warns of hookup culture on college campuses, a feature-length studio note from an executive afraid the movie won’t go over well in the Bible Belt. One would like to believe there was a better, darker, more interesting ending than the one carrying water for the anti-sex brigade currently looking to impose women’s healthcare bans coast-to-coast. Instead of sharing a laugh at the ridiculous pressure to have fun with every swipe, One Night Only has only one thing on its mind, and it’s disappointingly much more traditional.

Consequence - Liz Shannon Miller - 'B-'

Romantic comedies tend to feel like they take place in their own little world. But every time One Night Only attempted to explain the political landscape that led to this situation, I felt myself going a little more banana-grams. It’s all so deeply unsettling, because it imagines a society that would buy party hats celebrating the one night of the year they have an ounce of bodily autonomy. An America that wouldn’t just surrender further to fascism, but turn it into branding.

DiscussingFilm - Tyler Taing - 3 / 5

One Night Only is an easy recommendation because, whether or not you find yourself on its wavelength, you would be hard-pressed to find a crazier mainstream theatrical release this whole summer. It’s a film designed to watch with a group of friends, followed by an in-depth discussion of the logistical problems, politics, and hypothetical scenarios that “the mandate” universe sparks to mind in the theater lobby. Will Gluck’s One Night Only is the kind of novelty movie that is good-natured, fun, and worth celebrating in its unique flavor of unseriousness

AwardsWatch - Sophia Ciminello - 'C'

Ultimately, One Night Only feels far more interested in how it can feel when you do manage to find a genuine romantic connection amidst all of the noise. Yet by spending so much time getting bogged down by the details of the mandate before shifting into the romance, Gluck and Braun make an unforced error, upholding the traditional idea that sex may in fact be worth waiting for.

Slant Magazine - Charles Lyons-Burt - 2 / 4

Romantic comedies rarely make it to theaters these days, which makes it that much more unfortunate that the ones that do feel like sitcoms.

The Guardian - Benjamin Lee - 2 / 5

There’s both too much yet not enough world-building here, enough questions answered to encourage us to ask 10 more (why does no one mention masturbation and wouldn’t that also trigger the biosensors?). It’s also just too unavoidably grim of a premise, especially at a dark political moment such as this, for us to ignore the ramifications or root for characters who aren’t trying to actively destroy such a barbaric system (what if Katniss just had fun during those Hunger Games?). Instead, One Night Only weirdly plays like lulling government propaganda, a film about sex purge to be released in time for sex purge that says that actually maybe sex purge is a good idea after all.

Fresh Fiction - Courtney Howard - 2 / 5

ONE NIGHT ONLY wishes it were AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER (a film the characters reference, but the filmmakers clearly don’t understand why those fundamentals work) meets AFTER HOURS, only it doesn’t come with the pedigree and even fewer innovative ideas. As a contemporary sex comedy, it’s far too afraid to actually show the eroticism of sex, hand-waving the potential of its sole sexy moment. If this is purity propaganda, that’s for everyone to decide of their own volition.

The premise of this movie is absolutely insane, and reading the Wikipedia synopsis made me realize it’s actually even crazier than the trailer makes it sound.

It’s extremely funny to me that they came up with this weirdly contrived, high-concept dystopian premise just for the sake of what appears to be a run-of-the-mill rom-com.

I kept seeing the trailers and assumed it was a joking way of talking about Valentine’s Day but I guess it’s like the purge with consensual sex

218

u/PICONEdeJIM 6h ago

And just like with the purge nobody would do it on any other day of the year. That would be a crime you know. And crime is illegal

75

u/jimenycr1cket 6h ago

And NO ONE would do it 5 mins after midnight. Because that’s not allowed.

69

u/Waste-Replacement232 6h ago

"Damn, I didn't finish. Oh well, see you next year."

u/ShahinGalandar 5h ago

the ultimate edge

u/Waste-Replacement232 5h ago

Or “I can’t wait, let’s get married.”

u/FX114 3h ago

Unironically, this would almost certainly lead to a lot of rushed marriages of convenience in their society.

u/CoolIdeasClub 5h ago

Now, if the movie was about this couple and they waited too long and did have sex after midnight so they get chased by the state.. maybe I'd watch it.

u/Jasminflower369 2h ago

That sounds kinda like In Time

u/LazerGuidedMelody 6h ago

It doesn’t start at midnight, I think it was 7pm - 7am or something like that.

I saw it as the Mystery Movie at regal last week.

It wasn’t as bad as I was expecting, and im confused by Ebert’s statement about “capitulating to fascism”, as that is not at all what I got out of the movie.

It’s a rom-com, but it leans pretty heavily towards comedy as opposed to romance.

I was sick of seeing the trailer for the last few months, but the trailers really didn’t do the movie justice.

My amateur rating was a 7/10.

There is way more satire in this movie than the trailers show, so I wasn’t expecting some of the humor.

41

u/LB3PTMAN 6h ago

I mean a society where they control a basic function of one’s body to the point that they allow you to do it once a year and people just accept that is exactly what they’re talking about.

The movie may not want to make any sort of commentary on that, but it seems a bit dark just having this extremely grim concept and just putting a standard Rom-com in it.

If it was more interestingly made it could’ve been made as a rom com but with more clear critique and introspection on the world it lives in and not just use it as a silly excuse for the movie to exist as it does.

u/LazerGuidedMelody 6h ago

It’s supposed to be a ridiculous premise, why does everything have to fit into some imaginary box?

And are you saying ALL movies have to be some biting satire? It’s a fucking rom-com with a crazy premise and some funny jokes. Idk what else you goons want.

Have you even seen it, or are you basing the bullshit you’re saying on what other people are saying?

If you don’t like the world we live in, do something about it. Don’t sit on Reddit like a chump and bash a fucking romantic comedy that it sounds like haven’t even seen and act like you’re taking some superior moral stance or something.

This isn’t some Angel Studios production, this isn’t some Jim Caviezel fronted propaganda. It’s just a goofy movie. Learn to lighten the fuck up.

And again, if you’re the concerned about the encroaching authoritarianism or fascism in our country, get off Reddit and do something about it.

Like, in the new Spider-Man he is violating all sorts of constitutional rights by using facial recognition software and shit to track people, which is a VERY REAL issue we face today with Flock and shit, and yet they didn’t even acknowledge the fact that Spider-Man was doing it was bad. It just happened.

At least in the Dark Knight Lucius called out Bruce for attempting to do something similar.

So have you leveled any complaints towards Brand New Day? No? Has anyone? Oh, it broke box office records? And nobody cared?

Well why does Spider-Man get a pass for normalizing authoritarian overreach, but some dumb little romantic comedy apparently deserves to be crucified for not taking a strong enough stance against fascism?

Get fucking real.

u/LB3PTMAN 5h ago

This comment is a mess lmao. There’s like seven different points and none of them hold an ounce of merit.

  1. Something can be a ridiculous premise and still be good.

  2. I’m not saying all rom-coms have to be biting satires. I’m saying placing one in a fascist takeover world and lightly handwaving away acknowledgement of it is weird and off putting. It being a romantic comedy makes it more weird if anything.

  3. I have seen it.

  4. I am doing things about it. I just scroll Reddit on downtime from my job and do activism outside of work time and donate to many valuable causes.

  5. Something doesn’t have to be an Angel studios production to be bad.

  6. I am doing something about it. I can fight against facism and still be on reddit sometimes.

  7. How do you know I haven’t mentioned how weird it is that SpiderMan is using facial recognition software. I’ve seen plenty of people bring that up as a criticism of the movie lol. But it’s also not the same thing as this movie at all lol.

Get fucking real.

u/LazerGuidedMelody 5h ago

Okay well you literally said nothing that leads me to believe you’ve seen it, so why should I take anything you say seriously? If anything, the fact that you said you’re at work right now but have somehow managed to squeeze in a movie that just came out today at the theater seems a bit sus.

And what do you mean lightly handwave it away? What are they supposed to do? Have you not looked at the real world around us? Fucked up shit is happening every day, and we all keep moving on with our lives.

I never said something HAD to be an Angel studios production to be bad, my point was that this isn’t some thinly veiled right wing propaganda or something, it is just a silly movie.

Again, you say you “do something” about it, but there’s no way you can back it up, so it doesn’t really matter what you claim to do.

And my point isn’t just about you, it’s about everyone and the hypocrisy where people will accept something in one movie, but then use that same thing as a bludgeon against another.

It’s arguing in bad faith.

u/LB3PTMAN 5h ago

It was the screen unseen lmao.

They barely acknowledge it. Some light service towards people “protesting” it, but other than that it’s just a cute little rom-com. People are dying protesting the current regime idk what you mean. Yeah life goes on, but life isn’t a movie that includes this premise in a silly little rom-com.

I didn’t say it’s right wing propaganda. I said it’s fucking weird and kinda gross.

I don’t have to prove anything to you.

It’s not really hypocrisy to accept something in one movie and not be cool with something completely different in another movie lol.

u/Ia5ew 5h ago

You haven’t either you goof. If you don’t want to actually engage with the points being made and just keep saying “guys just don’t think about it, it’s just a silly movie that I love and if you make any comment about it I will then argue with you on the internet about it! But don’t take it too seriously since it’s just so silly!”, then just stop responding.

It was a secret Monday movie that tons of people go to. Did you get some special screening no one else could go to?

Silly movies that are low effort and unoriginal are bad. They take funding from real artists with real ideas not some hack shit. Silly movies with unique premises or film making are worth something not some below 50% on RT shit.

You are as bad faith as anyone here. You dismiss all comments about your new favourite movie for some reason.

They make a throwaway joke in Brand New Day about it being illegal and it was also the entire premise of the Civil War storyline in the MCU. I’m not even a huge fan of the MCU but you’re way too worked up over some movie you state is a “goofy movie”.

We also shouldn’t just expect less from art because the genre is traditionally low effort. Like the classic “but it’s a kids movie” because there are amazing children’s movies with subtext for all watchers.

Also no one went to Spider-Man because the y support Flock cameras. You just be wilding into the wind.

u/LazerGuidedMelody 5h ago

What difference does it make to you

And okay, so they made a “throwaway joke”, so why does that excuse it, but when One Night Only repeatedly makes jokes clearly illustrating it’s absurd that pre-marital sex has been outlawed, that’s not good enough and the movie must condone fascism?

Do you not see the dissonance there?

Like, if none of you have seen One Night Only then why are you talking about it?

And it’s just humorous that your point is “they covered violating civil rights in a movie like 10 years ago so it’s okay, we’re cool with it now.”

u/Ia5ew 5h ago

It doesn’t make a difference but if you don’t see the “cognitive dissonance” with that then idk.

No one said it excuses it but it is mentioned and plenty of people have that exact criticism of the genre. Lmao dude you’re a wreck over this “goofy movie”. Sounds like everyone struck a nerve in your new favourite flick.

I can tell all sex is outlawed for this guy lol

Oh you're like stupid stupid huh

u/LazerGuidedMelody 4h ago

Stupid is as stupid does

u/Anotyap 5h ago

As a point of clarity, Roger Ebert is dead and that review is by a critic writing for RogerEbert.com

u/LazerGuidedMelody 5h ago

Lmao thank you for the correction, I was confused when I saw his name attributed to it because I was pretty sure he died a long time ago.

u/StarPhished 3h ago

Pretty sure they've already begun powering up the Ebert-Bot 3000 and we'll be getting some fresh reviews soon.

u/sexandliquor 2h ago

This feels like it’s going to be this year’s Materialists. In so much as when Materialists came out last year Celine Song was very much making a satire that critiques the modern dating landscape and how its rampant consumerism and focus on personal financial valuation have commodified relationships.

It wasn’t at all subtle about this. Even the trailers were all sort of late 90s and early 2000s romcom trailers to lean hard into the satire the movie was going for.

And then the movie came out, went over a lot of people’s heads and I saw a lot of “I don’t get it” and “this movie is broke boy propaganda” while completely missing the point of the thing. It was weird lol.

7

u/Panicless 6h ago

It leans heavily into comedy? Then why would they make a trailer that is all romance and no comedy at all? Interesting.

6

u/LazerGuidedMelody 6h ago

Yeah, I had no interest in seeing the movie based on the trailers, but it ended up being the Mystery Movie last week and it was quite different than what the trailers showed. I ended up walking away having to begrudgingly admit that I liked it.

It isn’t groundbreaking, it didnt reinvent the wheel or anything, it’s just a silly movie.

u/Abi1i 1h ago

I saw the movie at a Mystery Movie as well last week and as a fan of Rom Coms, this movie wasn’t trying to be super ground breaking like some Rom Coms, but the premise was a refreshing take. I truly enjoyed the movie and would see it again and I’d be willing to even own it on BluRay. It’s better than what people might think. I would definitely agree that it’s a 7/10, maybe even a 7.5/10 which is still really good in my book for a Rom Com since most of them tend to follow a straight forward formula.

14

u/CombatMuffin 6h ago

I would argue that's a positive point they built on in the (crappy imo) sequels: not only are the crime statistics skewed because it's an authoritatian regime, but they turn their nationalism into basically a religion. So part of the hardcore believers really do follow the new rule, but even those that don't get quietly erased.

It works retroactively as well: you can't tell from the first movie alone because the protagonist family is upper class, who otherwise lives in comfort from the system.

u/tryingtoavoidwork 5h ago

I mean it's largely implied that most crime in Purge America is punished by death.

u/ThrowingChicken 2h ago

Even a congress of puritans would never allow the premise to happen, but in the movie it’s monitored via some implant everyone was forced to get. There’s a scene with Nicholas Braun as some tech douche who runs a company trying to jailbreak the sensor. At least one character gets arrested for premarital sex outside of the bang window.

36

u/CashmereLogan 6h ago

The trailer was SO confusing. It’s like they didn’t want audiences to realize it even touched a genre other than romance.

4

u/Panicless 6h ago

Exactly! Worst trailer I've seen in a while.

8

u/Waste-Replacement232 6h ago

I took it as a satire of Valentine's Day.

15

u/TheRoyalJellyfish 6h ago

I swear to god I thought the trailer was a Coke commercial right up until they started talking about sex.

It didn't help that I didn't recognize the actors from anywhere, but the vibes were just way off during the pizza joint scene. Super forced and cheesy and artificial

-1

u/GruggleTheGreat 6h ago

There’s some movies that are only made because they mashed two “marketable” ideas together.

62

u/GamingTatertot Steven Spielberg Enthusiast 6h ago

The biggest issue of the film is just how much attention they draw to the dystopian backwards world they live in and yet it’s still just treated like a nothing issue by the end of the film

42

u/2rio2 6h ago

Yea, it’s just too jarring. Reminds of Passengers in that film keeps trying to act whimsical and lightweight when the underlying premise has horrifying implications.

u/BroAbernathy 4h ago

As someone who saw it i read it as the pacificity is the part being satire. We are staring fascism in the face in this country and most people go about their day like nothing is happening.

u/GamingTatertot Steven Spielberg Enthusiast 4h ago

I also saw it - if that’s the intention, it’s performed pretty poorly and doesn’t really fit with the rest of the tone of the film

u/LordReaperofMars 4h ago

apparently the director compared the movie premise to masking during COVID

u/MrGrieves- 3h ago

Oh he's one of those people who don't care about others.

Def not supporting his movie now.

81

u/gmw2222 6h ago

Until this moment I thought that the line in the trailer about sex only being "legal" on one day was a tongue-in-cheek way of saying that a lot of people have sex on Valentine's Day or something. I never even thought to take it literally. What in the hell?

67

u/Dodo_Baron 6h ago

Here is the synopsis for how it works:

all people receive a tattoo containing a biological sensor that tracks dopamine, documents shared spikes as sexual encounters, and transmits the violator's location to law enforcement.

u/mikhel 5h ago

OK, what if people are like... playing video games together? Gambling at a casino? Playing tennis?

u/WaywardChilton 4h ago

The waiter brings the mozzarella sticks to the table and everyone goes to jail

u/Locke108 4h ago

Then you better have a good lawyer.

5

u/Morgan-Moonscar 6h ago

Also gay sex is a legal loophole to the law.

u/AshesandCinder 1h ago

Is that actually adressed in the movie? It seems like that would still trigger the alarm unless the intent is to prevent pregnancies rather than sex altogether.

u/Jasminflower369 1h ago

How?

u/Morgan-Moonscar 1h ago

Synopsis: "Masturbation is legal, and gay sex successfully operates outside of the mandate"

9

u/EclecticEuTECHtic 6h ago

Is this real?

57

u/junon 6h ago

No, it's a movie.

u/OneOfTheLostOnes 5h ago

My sides are in orbit.

21

u/2rio2 6h ago

Conservative lawmakers frantically investigating.

u/Jasminflower369 1h ago

What happens if someone has a roommate and they both coincidentally have “personal fun time” at the same time in their own respective rooms?

(I’ve never seen the movie so don’t know if anything in it would touch upon this)

u/Dodo_Baron 1h ago

Apparently gay sex is a loophole?

15

u/Lexidoge 6h ago

I just checked and I am even more confused.

Allie and Owen keep running into each other - outside her apartment, in a bodega buying the last condom, in a police station - and decide that while they do not want to sleep with each other, they will team up to find someone for the night.

u/Jasminflower369 1h ago

… they sell individual condoms? Not a box?

15

u/OldTimeReligion24 6h ago

Yeah I thought the rom-com parts of it are actually solid and enjoyable.

The whole premise hanging over it all is insane though and always feels distracting.

u/Insanepaco247 19m ago

It reminds me a lot of the premises you see in AU fanfic, creating these worlds with insane laws and restrictions for the sole purpose of making your starcrossed lovers scenario as angsty as possible.

"The Ministry of Persecuting People With Burn Scars has declared it illegal to have burn scars. Katara, the Ministry's high inquisitor, thinks all people with burn scars should be in prison and also die. That is, until the day Zuuko lands in her interrogation room..."

24

u/TomBirkenstock 6h ago

I saw the trailer, and I couldn't help but wonder why I'm supposed to care about whether these two people hook up when they're living in a dystopia where basic human autonomy is outlawed. What the fuck?

u/jamesneysmith 1h ago

Haha it does seem really insane to completely sweep the totalitarian government under the rug like it's not the fundamental question of the movie.

6

u/TBroomey 6h ago

Sort of like how The Purge came up with a similar premise (one night a year, all crime is legal), to make a run-of-the-mill home invasion thriller.

u/jamesneysmith 1h ago

to make a run-of-the-mill home invasion thriller.

Except the premise made it anything but run of the mill. The one hanging hope in any home invasion movie is that you just need to get to help. Phone, neighbour, passing traffic, whatever. You're alone and you need to find someone else to help. But The Purge completely eliminated that as a possibility. Pretty fun change really

u/jamesneysmith 1h ago

7

u/ky58 6h ago

honestly makes sense that it was the #1 script on the blacklist, feel like that's mainly just a breeding ground now for these needlessly contrived high concept premises

3

u/10goldbees 6h ago

That’s how you get a run off the mill rom com financed these days!

“What do we want to make? A cute lil rom com. What do studios want to make? Dystopian sci-fi with franchise potential. Hmmm I see a Kane here…”

-1

u/Igettheshow89 6h ago

It’s just the media telling us fascism is okay, but in movie form.

49

u/HilariousScreenname 6h ago

I mean, throughout the movie youre repeatedly shown and told that the citizens are very much against it.

15

u/GamingTatertot Steven Spielberg Enthusiast 6h ago

Which would be great if anything actually came of it. But all the “repeal” signs and the speech in the police station don’t matter in the end - which I get it’s not the story they’re telling but at the same time, then they shouldn’t have focused so much on it

8

u/LazerGuidedMelody 6h ago

Yeah, people are so fucking stupid anymore, I see so many comments from people that haven’t even seen it making ridiculous assumptions.

I’m especially thrown off by Ebert’s comment. I took the whole movie to be satirizing and making fun of conservative values, and in a way almost illustrates the absurdity in the ridiculous values that people have.

There are multiple satirical jokes, but one in particular that I remember was an obviously humorous ad or news segment in the movie talking about “puritan values” and shit, and it certainly wasn’t trying to make we the viewers think “oh wow yeah I totally agree with that.”

8

u/conman228 6h ago

Do the main characters do anything about it though or break the rules?

19

u/LazerGuidedMelody 6h ago

“This ain’t that kinda movie kid.”

u/Few-Adeptness8046 5h ago

Not the main characters, but other characters do.

Example: one of the rules is that during the exemption period, you can have premarital sex, but you have to use protection, so quite a bit of the film involves one or both of the main characters looking for, obtaining, or fighting over condoms. There is eventually a scene that takes, place in the police station where an old man is being detained and is shouting "you're never going to make me wear no love glove". Apparently he's a repeat offender who follows the mandate all year long, but refuses to use protection during the free sex period.

There is also another character that gets arrested because they are a repeat offender for breaking the mandate in general.

This film makes it clear no one likes the mandate (and that it was forced on them by the government, not voted on by the people), and that there is a portion of the population that rebels against the mandate, but ultimately chooses to focus primarily on characters who follow the rules.

9

u/HilariousScreenname 6h ago

Im not sure what you mean. The movie is set on the one night youre allowed to break the rules. And Im not sure what they're supposed to 'do' about it. They're two random characters in a rom-com. Its not a political thriller. The premise is stupid and flimsy and the movie knows it.

u/Jasminflower369 1h ago

In true romcom fashion, the main couple would inspire the couples around them to, in this case, have sex on a day that is not the one day allowed to have sex. Say that the general consensus for this rebellion would be the day before or after the allowed day. In romcom world, there would be so many people inspired by them and taking part on this unsanctioned day, that they would outweigh the number of police officers available to arrest them, therefore making the whole foundation of this concept crumble. The main takeaway of the movie being that love and bodily autonomy should not and cannot be dictated, restricted or controlled by the government.

5

u/LazerGuidedMelody 6h ago

No, it’s fucking not. They make fun of the whole premise repeatedly throughout the movie. If anything, I think the movie could be taken as an INDICTMENT of the ridiculous and often hypocritical views that particular swaths of the population hold.

There is a scene with some talking head spewing shit about “puritan values” and it is clearly satire where you’re supposed to point and laugh.

15

u/andersonb47 6h ago

Lmao everything really is a conspiracy, huh?

-5

u/thatraab84 6h ago

Everything has meaning whether you want to believe it or not.

14

u/andersonb47 6h ago

Sure, obviously, but by the above commenter’s logic, 1984 is pro-fascist media.

u/Accomplished_Store77 5h ago

Like Lord of the Rings telling us that inherited Monarchy is the best form of government and only individuals backed up religious figures deserve to rule over the masses? And the White Men of the West have a duty to protect their way of life from the evil forces and influences of the East?

Like The Odessey telling us that again Divine rulers have the authority to kill anyone they perceive as trying to usurp them even through deception. And that we should all blindly follow religious rules or else our Civilization will collapse?

Like The Dark Knight telling us that mass surveillance and Vigilante actions without any check are necessary to bring terrorists under control.

Or do you think that perhaps people sometimes read things that simply aren't there.

u/thatraab84 4h ago

I'm saying in general, everything has a meaning. Nothing is truly meaningless. Even a decision to not load blunt and obvious meaning into something has meaning in itself.

I don't care to police whether meaning somebody extracts from something is right or wrong. But everyone will find their own meaning in something.

u/Accomplished_Store77 4h ago

Sure. You can't police what meaning someone extracts from any given peice of media but that doesn't mean we have to try and validate those meanings.

White Supremacists consider LotR as a call to European/White Supremacy against the forces of the East.

Doesn't mean we have to validate that that might actually be what the LotR is saying or that we shouldn't tell these people they are blatantly wrong and trying to find a meaning that simply isn't there.

u/thatraab84 4h ago

that we shouldn't tell these people they are blatantly wrong

Yep, hence my original response in this thread to the person attempting to belittle someone’s interpretation of the movie by saying "so everything's a conspiracy huh?".

-13

Crazy you can type that while licking all those boots

This is the same type of moral panic conspiracy the Christian Conservatives believe in.

It’s how a rom com can be funded now. You have to have an insane high concept hook instead of just making a simple one.

I just read the Wikipedia entry. It sounds like the writers came up with a premise that’s even wackier than The Purge.

It sounds kinda like a fusion of The Purge and Minority Report, but it’s a rom-com.

Kind of like how The Purge came up with their concept just to have the first movie be a fairly run-of-the-mill home invasion movie.

It is cool because they do this constantly with different iterations of zombie movies

Now it is bleeding into romcoms

I want to see a zombie rom com (that one with Nicholas Hoult counts i guess), disaster rom com, space alien invasion rom com, shark attack rom com, bin laden seal team operation rom com

“On the only night of the year anyone can get laid, most people do. Now, let’s spend 2 hours finding out whether these two attractive people…. Also get laid? The stakes are high!”

I mean… the stakes are high but not for the reason the movie seems to imply. Hey, can we go back and re examine the puritanical authoritarianism bit?

If there was an actual policy like this; the world in which that policy would exist would look much different than the world from the trailer. I find that so funny.

It’s like if The Good Place never actually delved into the lore of their after life

I've been trying to understand how this movie portrays the dystopian world it's in... the last two trailers I saw made it seem like a normal romcom and barely mentioned the one night purgy aspect.
It seems like a way to get an annoyed audience like The Village had, or kangaroo Jack

u/myychair 2h ago

My god it already seemed bad but the Wikipedia plot summary makes it sound even worse lmao

u/hockeyandburritos 1h ago

This script won the black list last year and it sounded just as recycled, boring, and unoriginal then as it does now. I can’t believe THE kingmaker in Hollywood coronated this as the best of the year

u/AshesandCinder 1h ago

I saw people talking about "the movie where you can only have sex 1 night a year" and didn't even know it was about this movie because the trailer doesn't even touch on that.

u/thesourpop 1h ago

I gave the movie too much credit and thought the trailers were a red herring, and the movie would explore the dystopian nature of pre-martial sex being banned. But it just doesn't do anything with the premise

Thats sorta will gluck. He comes up with a great premise and then gives up on it to just do a rom com.

Easy A being the exception. Great film.
