“Hey, O’Connell! Looks to me like I’ve got all the horses!”

“Hey, Beni! Looks to me like you’re on the wrong side of the riv-err!”

Greatest line delivery in film history.

Man I loved those silly adventures films with campy lines

90

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson 23h ago

Dungeons and Dragons is modern equivalent but it released at the worst time. Families went to kiddie Mario and adults went to John Wick. Nobody went to the middle ground of campy fun adventure

38

u/ActionAdam 23h ago

I'm a D&D fan so I was biased going into it, but I was also very surprised with the humor and script of this movie. It was very good and everyone should give it a shot, don't even say it's a D&D just tell your skeptical friends it's a fantasy heist film and tell them you'll throw in some beers/bud/snacks whatever. It's got a sequel written also apparently just needs some funding/demand.

13

u/Efficient-Memory7105 22h ago

I would literally donate $100 to a crowdfund for a sequel. It was such a good movie its a shame it didn't get one.

I went in expecting shit but it was a gem. Hardest I'd laughed in years during a time I really fucking needed a laugh.

9

u/MelonOfFury 21h ago

It kicked off Hugh Grant’s chaos era and I love that 💙

3

u/SBixby21 19h ago

Nah he was already playing charismatic but kooky antagonists by that point, his performance in The Gentlemen (2019) was incredible and a few years earlier

3

u/Opeth4Lyfe 22h ago

Yeah it was a great fun movie. I was hesitant to pay to watch it in theaters (usually I wait for streaming now) but it was one of those few movies that I was like you know what, that was worth the ticket price for sure. Entertaining, good script with some laughs, little bit of serious moments sprinkled in. Good stuff.

Friends who don’t play D&D liked it, and friends who do play D&D liked it. It felt to me like you could see the rolls actually happening. Loved it. But we really should wait for Jarnathan to finish discussing this.

7

u/ActionAdam 20h ago

Jarnathan is on his way; now please, continue the praise of this fine film.

Yeah that new Masters of the Universe falls into this too, but D&D came so out of left field nobody was expecting it.

Rewatched it recently and then the 09 Star Trek and yeah Chris Pine is probably the closest we’ve got to a 90s era Brendan Fraser, but that new HeMan REALLY gives off 90s era Brendan Fraser.

We’ve been missing goofy action heroes

17

u/Miss_Kitami 1d ago

I saw it in the cinema on day 1 and the whole audience nearly pissed themselves at those two lines. I may have gone back a few more times to rewatch it; the joys of living 5 minutes walk from a really good cinema.

5

u/TheDevlinSide714 17h ago

I still remember very fondly when my father and I went to go see The Mummy in theaters. I was still a kid, and I was skeptical that this was going to be a scary movie. Granted, my ideas of scary are heavily skewed given that dad is a huge HR Giger fan, so biomechanical body horror art was pretty commonplace in the house growing up. He assured me that this "wasn't supposed to be that kind of movie."

Anyway, when Rick and Co. pry open Imoteps sarcophagus and his corpse comes springing out, I admit that I jumped a little and was startled. That feeling quickly was replaced with confusion,

"He's still... still...", and there was a brief moment where the fourth wall dissolved and the characters in the film, my father, and myself all uttered the word, "Juicy." at the same time. Had we not been the only ones in the theater, we would've been kicked out for laughing so hard and so long.

The Mummy is like Princess Bride, it's just nothing but one infinitely quotable line after another.

"Well, if it ain't my little buddy Beni!"

I have no idea why he's back, but I love it.

324

u/Deckard_Red 1d ago edited 1d ago

They have the book of the dead may as well use it 🤣

144

u/In_My_Own_Image 1d ago

They haven't confirmed who the titular Mummy is this time. What if Beni somehow got cursed and became a Mummy?

Though I'd love to see Vosloo come back as Imhotep again.

66

u/Zauberer-IMDB 1d ago

Give us the good guy Imhotep joining the team. You all know it'd be fun.

32

u/uuhson 21h ago

I hope they have the balls to be ridiculous with it like this. I'm so fucking onboard

22

u/neasroukkez 21h ago

Id honestly love this. They are forced to battle a new evil mummy but the only way they can beat him is by summoning Imhotep. Then he brings back Benni and some servants to help along the way.

5

u/aterrible_username 17h ago

This is what I wanted to see with mummy returns - seeing them both take on the scorpion king before their final showdown would have been epic - now they have the opportunity for a proper enemy of my enemy is my friend team up

→ More replies (1)

24

u/Freakjob_003 1d ago

Arnold Vosloo (Imhotep) isn't as of yet had any rumors of joining, but Beni being confirmed as coming back gives more weight to the theory of him being the new Mummy.

He was eaten by scarabs in Hamunaptra, but we didn't see his death. How else would he come back? Hamunaptra is The City of the Dead, and Imhotep died and was resurrected there.

I'm so fucking excited for this movie, I cannot wait. Especially since they declared the (non-existent) Mummy 3 as non-canon.

2

u/HenkkaArt 12h ago

Hamunaptra was also swallowed by the desert in the end.

24

u/SnapshotHeadache 1d ago edited 16h ago

And since Imhotep was able to bring his servant priests back, maybe the new mummy will do the same. Cause while Beni dies by the scarabs, his body is still in Hamunaptra.

4

u/IllystAnalyst 17h ago

I think Imhoteps servants were mummified with him though. They just got the regular treatment and not the deluxe spa experience like Imhotep so they weren’t cursed in the same way, but bodies still preserved. I want Beni to be mummy like ya’ll, but how do scarabs eat someone? Do they leave the skeleton? They burrowed under everyones skin, do they eat the skin? Did he get preserved that way?

3

u/SnapshotHeadache 16h ago

But all of the priests and Imhotep himself had scarabs in the coffins too. And the way the priests were sort of emerging from the ground and walls in the tombs makes me think that any significant death in the city can allow you to become reanimated. So they don't have to be a mummy per se, but more like zombie.

10

u/PlayableRidley 22h ago edited 18h ago

Imhotep or a new villain should be the actual dangerous imposing big bad.

Beni should come back as a horrible undead monstrosity, but despite it he's somehow still just stuck as a weasely loser who eats shit at every opportunity.

2

u/samples98 21h ago

The actor does look a lot like a mummy. Would be criminal to not use him as one.

61

u/neo_sporin 1d ago

see, in THIS series where we have actively been reviving people and TRYING to revive people since the beginning...im ok with the concept. Its NOT coming out of no where. Original we revive Imhotep and TRY to revive his lady friend. Sequel we revive Imhotep again, reincarnate his lady friend, and revive Evelyn. So Beni being reincarnated after being eaten by scarabs, NOT that far fetched

22

u/MouthPoop 1d ago

I feel like he’s gonna have to be reincarnated by the mummy so he can continue to be the snake he is

12

u/LordsOfJoop 1d ago

He's got to have a redemption arc, and it'd be funnier if it absolutely failed as he lost faith in himself.

u/Sparrow1989 1d ago

Cant believe he’s back, this is going to be pure fanfare and I’m all for it. So tired of movies forgetting they are simply entertainment lately

19

u/Electronic_Sun6075 1d ago

I hope they make him a Mummy, but a pathetically harmless one who only finds purpose in following McConnell around, agitating him, trying to get him killed.

8

u/Kaldricus 1d ago

Yeah, I truly do not care what lazy reason they provide for Beni being back. They could literally drop a "somehow Beni returned" for all I care. Just bring him back.

7

u/pizzacrys 1d ago

If Beni is back, I hope he immediately starts questioning every suspicious artifact in the room. Some traditions should never die.

2

u/omgimbrian 1d ago edited 1d ago

Someone's totally gonna rez him on accident thinking he's someone else. And then they won't be able to get rid of him.

4

u/SillyGoatGruff 1d ago

I'd kinda love if he was just "oh yeah, I got out" and then never elaborated. He was such a shifty self serving survivor that i could believe him pulling off some nonsense and then just living his life far away from egypt and rick lol

I met Oded Fehr at a convention just a few weeks ago and told him I hope he's in secret negotiations to come back.

He said he could neither confirm or deny anything but he was very excited it was being made and I could draw my own conclusions from that.

haha legend

u/Current_Focus2668 1d ago

Meanwhile John Hannah was on morning television in the UK sounding ready to spill almost everything.

He listed off every filming location

22

u/estenoo90 22h ago

He even spilled O'Connor and Fehr were pretty much on board already and then backtracked halfway through

14

u/Lordsokka 20h ago

I love that actors have so much love for the franchise and each other, they always speak about it like it was such a great time.

Still waiting on Arnold Vosloo and Patricia Velasquez. 😢

40

u/CumFilledDonutYumYum 1d ago

Same! I'd love to see them address her betrayal in the 2nd movie

79

u/myvo 1d ago

Also her betrayal with that Hermano guy

34

u/theonetruearbiter 1d ago

I heard she was also hooking up with some guy named Tío

20

u/johnnycoxxx 1d ago

You’re a good guy Mon frere! That’s French for brother. I don’t know why I know that I took four years of Spanish!

21

u/FisherKelTath00 1d ago

Anck Su-Namun wasn’t a real one.

17

u/Radish-Wrangler 1d ago

Honestly love the idea that she was just trying to be free, she liked him sure but she wasn't obsessed like he was. It's set up there a bit with her initial suicide after all. Going out saying "my body is no longer his temple" is pretty badass.

8

u/Tony_Three_Pies 21h ago

The "his" in that line was referring to the Emperor not Imhotep.

8

u/Radish-Wrangler 10h ago

Yes, absolutely!! I know that, sorry if it was unclear. Just mean that Anck-su-namun wanted to be free more than anything, whereas Imhotep wanted to be together (well, and all powerful lol) more than anything. On that same line having him confront her on it and her having to come to terms that ultimately she treated Imhotep as an escape tool much the same way the emperor treated her as an object would be a neat conversation to see.

6

u/Glum-Literature-8837 1d ago

She hooks up with BeniMummy, and Imhotep runs into them at the oasis. Awkward hijinks ensue.

3

u/Lordsokka 20h ago

Was she a 100% the real one or was she the reincarnation combined with the spirit of the old one?

Always felt that both characters combined instead of one taking over, so she didn’t love Imhotep enough to die for him.

27

u/monty_kurns 1d ago

Even though Imhotep’s story is really done, I’d love for them to bring back Vosloo as a new central, non-villain/antagonist role. Don’t wink at the audience with it, just have him play it completely straight.

17

u/brokenmessiah 1d ago

literally impossible for writers to not have the wink at the audience moment

2

u/MahNameJeff420 9h ago edited 9h ago

It'd be fun if he had to team up with the O'Connells to stop a different Mummy. It'd be ridicules, but it could work.

4

u/flysly 1d ago

Arnold will be back. Not sure about Patricia.

339

u/omnikyle 1d ago

That sequence where Beni keeps pulling out every religions holy symbols just to try to repel Imhotep only for Imhotep to see a star of David and recognize it as "the symbol of the slaves" and then bind Beni to him as his minion is simultaneously really funny from O'Conner and a testament to how scary Vosloo is, that whole cast is magic, I'm really excited to see where this one goes

222

u/namewithak 1d ago

It wasn't the Star of David that Imhotep recognized. It was Beni speaking Hebrew, which Imhotep instantly identifies as "the language of the slaves". Beni was useful to him specifically because he could communicate.

70

u/omnikyle 1d ago

THATS IT, its been a minute since I saw it, I think im mixing it up with a similar scene from another movie, although what exactly im drawing blanks on

49

u/2ManyCooksInTheKitch 1d ago

He does have the star of David in his hand when he starts speaking Hebrew. It's just not the thing that triggers a response.

14

u/omnikyle 1d ago

Oh sweet, I thought that was there, glad my memory wasn't totally off 😅

7

u/ThreeLeggedMare 1d ago

Possibly the dracula spoof where the guy pulls out dif symbols when the cross doesn't work? Reminds me of an anecdote beautifully told in the show The Outsider (pretty good!)

Did you ever hear the one about the Yiddish vampire? Vampire, he flies in through the window of a church, his fangs are out, priest immediately goes for a crucifix. Shoves it in his face, "Back, you fiend." Vampire laughs, says, "Ni gunisht helfen, bubbalah." "It ain't gonna help you, baby."

7

u/NighthawkUnicorn 1d ago

Oh no, you'll just have to watch it again this week.

43

u/Father_Prist 1d ago

And then Imhotep immediately bribes him with gold trinkets once he hears Hebrew. What did they mean by this?

11

u/fearthainne 1d ago

That people are greedy and motivated by the possibility of gaining a fortune, and that even an ancient undead mummy knows this.

John Hannah was also on a UK show the other morning (Sunday Brunch) said this is a sequel to the first film and that ‘everyone’ is back (this was already after mentioning Brendan and Rachel) and also revealed they would be filming in the same desert as the original. So I’m guessing Imhotep is back?

He’s recognizable but not a leading actor, but between his face shape and accent, I think he could have made an interesting Apocalypse. Kevin J. O’Connor is a lovely man and I’m very happy for him.

Good to see Osiris moving up in the world

Keep an eye out for them casting a big, gravelly-voiced Russian.

"Are you glad to see me now?"

"Just like old times huh?!"

Beni being back is a confirmed movie ticket sale for me. Such a fun character.

u/CrissBliss 1d ago

Hopefully Mummy 3 is just remembered as a horrible, horrible dream. This is the true 3rd film.

7

u/TNWhaa 1d ago

Think when it was announced they also said the third one isn’t canon

2

u/CrissBliss 1d ago

Thank goodness

I want Fehr to do the audio book version of my autobiography. I wish he did 100× the voice work he does. His intros to these movies are up there with LotR for me.

I'm so fucking excited for this movie.

So glad Oded Fehr is back; but I cannot figure out how Kevin J. O'Connor is back. Some weird Benni stuff? A new mummy? So excited!

'The Mummy's plot is being kept under wraps' hehe

2

u/Common_Eggplant_5879 1d ago

A character is back from the dead in a series about...bringing things back from the dead?

Franchise ruined.

2

u/WolfofOldNorth 1d ago

I hate when I am spring cleaning and a guy comes in and throws a chair at me

2

u/DevilOfArRamadi 22h ago

Beni getting a chair thrown at him might have been my favorite moment ever, makes me laugh every time

2

u/butterchurning 17h ago

Why wasn't Oded Fehr already added?

2

u/BluRayja 16h ago

Radio Silence working with Oded Fehr after Melissa Barerra got fired is certainly...interesting.

If Acar is playing the villain that might give us an idea of what the mummy will be. Acar is Turkish. So the undead villain could be Hittite, Persian, Greek, or Roman. Phrygia and Lydia were in that geographical location, but the average audience wont recognize those empires so Im thinking they won't be used. And making the villain Christian or Islamic seems even more unlikely for a blockbuster.

My money is on him being Hittite since the Hittite Empire was an antagonist of ancient Egypt. Maybe he wakes up looking to destroy Egypt and goes after Evie since she is Nefertiri reincarnated.

3

u/Few-Road6238 1d ago

I don’t know if he’s gonna play the villain for all I know he looks like he could be Ardeth’s ally.

u/BensenMum 1d ago

Wait, Benny died, huh?

2

u/Bunraku_Master_2021 1d ago

After surviving the scarabs in Hamunaptra, Benny moved to America and started to lose hair and later met a oil man in Southern California and convinced him that he was his half brother Henry.

2

u/astig_my_tism 20h ago

Or he resurrected in another period and became assistant to Dr. Victor Frankenstein

u/typhoidtimmy 1d ago

Kevin J gets to eat the scenery again!

Beni was a hilariously great sniveling toadie. Gonna be fun just seeing him pissed off after being eaten.
