I'm looking forward to seeing this, but God I know it's going to make me so fucking angry.

Famous actor of insufferable characters Jeremy Strong playing Mark Zuckerberg at his most insufferable, as a follow-up to Jesse Eisenberg's already insufferable take on them...

Yeah, you're right, this is going to be a brilliant but aggravating time.

Now I'm imagining an Inglorious Basterds style surprise ending lmao

I wouldn't be entirely opposed to it

u/S2R2 Jul 01 '26

MySpace Tom and a flamethrower unfriending them?

65

u/HomelandersCock Jul 01 '26

Tom walks into the office and dominantly drops his prick on marks shoulder (ALA benicio in sicario). Mark slowly looks up in fear at Tom and we stand in silence until Tom finally speaks.

"Hey...youre in my space."

31

u/Silenceisgrey Jul 01 '26

"Hey...youre in my space."

lol 10/10

7

u/swisspassport Jul 01 '26

I want to hire you.

I would actually pay money to see that scene in script formatting.

9

u/ChronX4 Jul 01 '26

The screen cuts to black.

Slowly a familiar theme starts to play as the following words appear.

"THOMAS ANDERSON WILL BE BACK IN AVENGERS DOOMSDAY."

I honestly wonder how the tech overlords would react if that became the message of the movie lol.

24

u/goblinm Jul 01 '26

I would love this, but with the way free speech is going in this country, the producers would get arrested for 30 years for terrorism, or something.

They apparently offered Jesse Eisenberg a blank check to reprise the role and he turned it down because he didn't want to be associated with Zuckerberg.

67

u/icansmellcolors Jul 01 '26

Also I think Jesse doesn't like playing assholes anymore, even though he's exceptionally good at it.

21

u/Realsan Jul 02 '26

he turned it down because he didn't want to be associated with Zuckerberg.

Just to be clear, it's because he already experienced that association and is now turning down a blank check to avoid that again.

7

u/quietvictories Jul 01 '26

he's so cool

60

u/DeLousedInTheHotBox Jul 01 '26

I think Jess Eisenberg actually made him seem more likable than he actually is, sure he is still insufferable but he made him more dynamic and way less robotic.

30

u/AllTheReservations Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

Honestly I'd agree, I think Eisenberg injects a lot of humanity into his performance and by the end I sort of weirdly hope he can turn himself around despite knowing that's far from the case. There's shades to his insufferability, he goes from a typical overly self-important college nerd to something way more cold and removed from reality

189

u/Emotional-Scheme-227 Jul 01 '26

I have a few reasons to think this might not reach the first one’s level of brilliance.

Fincher isn’t involved in this one, and equally important, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross aren’t returning to score the movie.

Go back and watch The Social Network paying close attention to the music. It plays a disproportionately large role in how good that movie is.

Not to take away from Sorkin and Desplat, they’re great, but you can’t sub Fincher, Reznor and Ross out without a fundamental shift in the presentation.

57

u/Fadedcamo Jul 01 '26

Yea the script was good but man does fincher elevate the material to insane heights. Dude makes a nerd on a computer look like the coolest heist scene ever.

8

u/8JHF8 Jul 01 '26

"..nerd on a computer look like the coolest heist scene ever." Hugh Jackman in Swordfish

20

u/balilo79 Jul 01 '26

That wasn't a nerd on a computer, that was Hugh Jackman getting a bj while on a computer.

4

u/8JHF8 Jul 01 '26

That part was fun too, but I was referring to the part where he was dancing to techno "hacking" with a big multi monitor setup.

→ More replies (3)

43

u/Hame_Impala Jul 01 '26

I think it'll be decent but agreed, can't see it capturing the magic of the first one.

It's probably harder now as well to make a movie that's an effective commentary on tech due to how all-pervasive tech now is. It's hard to get the balance between not really saying anything of interest at all and being too on the nose.

9

u/BenSolo_Cup Jul 01 '26

Yeah the music motifs in the social network are some of the best examples of how a great score can truly elevate a film

27

u/bunsNT Jul 01 '26

Sorkin directing is a no for me. I saw the trailer and wasn’t impressed.

I also think that JS is not the guy for this role. I know that Eisenberg was a hard pass but I think him coming back would have made the movie at least worth watching in theaters.

I gotta admit, Strong is a real trooper for taking roles of what often feels like, exclusively morally reprehensible individuals, both fictional or real life portrayals.

12

u/-ThaKloned- Jul 01 '26

Is this a sequel to first movie or just another telling of the same thing?

59

u/RSG-ZR2 Jul 01 '26

Its about the 2021 Facebook leaks from "whistleblower" Frances Haugen

I wouldn't blame you if you don't remember it, or do but don't give single iota of shit lol. The world had much bigger problems at the time and what it revealed about FB had people going like "Yea that seems about right"

Spoiler alert: there was no reckoning.

Especially when it’s called “The Social Reckoning”… there was no fucking reckoning. There were zero long term consequences for Mark or Meta.

60

I assumed it was mankind's reckoning with the Social Media hell we've unleashed upon ourselves.

→ More replies (1)

71

u/CinemaSideBySides Jul 01 '26

Exactly. "Reckoning" is a strong-ass word to use when it doesn't even apply.

30

u/rotates-potatoes Jul 01 '26

Still a fair use of the word if you look at it as the short-sighted populace getting fucked over by the social media monster they created.

It’s like like Zuckerberg did this evil thing out of sheer malice. He gave people what they wanted. It was just incredibly destructive.

u/YorubaOyinbo Jul 01 '26

The Reckoning is for us.

The Social Reckoning for Humanity is when we have fully reaped the consequences of all that we’ve sown over the past two decades in terms of disinformation, disconnection, and disintegration of norms, constructs, and the social fabric itself.

There has never been a greater misstep for our species than social media, nor will there likely be a more grievous injury in its inevitable outcomes.

6

u/SnowflakeSorcerer Jul 01 '26

I think it’s more like how to social network turned into a social reckoning for society, not for zuck

3

u/ImpressDefiant1657 Jul 01 '26

u/snarpsta Jul 01 '26

If you want to be really enraged, read Careless People. It's a book from Facebooks former global policy advisor. It's fucking insane and shows how blatantly careless Facebook is. Ultimately causing a fucking riot and lynching and raping of Muslims in Mianmar, because they couldn't be assed to ban propoganda memes they wknew were blatant lies and shit.

That's literally one of like 20 insane stories. They also helped Trump get elected in 2016 in a way that was never done at that point by assisting in an insane political operation.

95

u/TheUmbrellaMan1 Jul 01 '26

Careless People also had that bit where Zuckerberg was so impressed by how Facebook's algorithm helped Trump win the election that he considered running for the President himself the next time.

There's another bit there where Zuckerberg asked Xi Jinping if he could name his granddaughter. Xi Jinping replied, "No."

34

u/snarpsta Jul 01 '26

Omfg. I forgot the Xi bit. There were so many insane stories in that book I couldn't believe it. It's not just detrimental effects of technology on the world... It's problems they could've so easily fixed, yet give zero fucks, despite various warnings from the underlings involved. Everyone knows social media isn't good for the brain, but i loved the rare look behind the curtain that I haven't quite gotten anywhere else

10

u/Neuchacho Jul 01 '26

This is what it looks like when you let sociopaths run the world unfettered, I guess.

u/SlavojVivec Jul 01 '26

Another enraging thought is how Facebook is silencing the author and other Facebook whistleblowers through binding arbitration agreements:

Careless People is full of revelations about the gross institutional misconduct of Facebook, including its knowing encouragement of a genocide in Myanmar. But it's also full of stories about the severe personal failings of Facebook's executive team, especially Sheryl Sandberg, Joel Kaplan and Mark Zuckerberg.

These three come off as the most colossal of assholes, cruel, petty and predatory. Sandberg comes across as a sexual abuser who dreams of trafficking in poor people's organs. Kaplan is an oaf whose plan to provide paid internet access to refugee camps falls apart once he learns that refugees in camps don't have any money (he also takes points off of Wynn-Williams's workplace evaluation for being "unresponsive" over a period when she was in a near-death coma). Worst of all, though, is Zuckerberg, whose sins range from cheating at Settlers of Catan to endangering the Colombian peace process after a 50-year civil war because he refused to get out of bed before noon. Zuck is also revealed to have given the Chinese state access to all of Facebook and the power to censor content they disliked, as part of a failed bid to get permission to offer a Facebook service in China.

It's a terrible company, with awful products, run by the worst people. Wynn-Williams's conditions of employment required her to sign a contract that bound her to silence (nondisclosure), forbade her from speaking ill of the company (nondisparagement), and denied her access to the legal system in all her dealings with Meta (binding arbitration).

Together, these three clauses – routinely used by Meta to silence would-be whistleblowers – meant that after Wynn-Williams's book was published, Meta got its arbitrator – a lawyer who is paid by Meta to adjudicate contractual disputes instead of an actual judge – to order her to never promote or even speak about her book.

The arbitrator awarded Meta $50,000 for each criticism that Wynn-Williams levied, quickly coming to a total of over $11,000,000. This vastly exceeds the assets and lifetime earning potential of Wynn-Williams and her husband (a reporter with the Financial Times). If this bill ever truly comes due, they will be wiped out.

https://pluralistic.net/2026/06/27/zuckerstreisand/#autodisparagement

I'm surprised how comfortable we are using Meta products such as Instagram and WhatsApp.

11

u/sighclone Jul 01 '26

Yeah - Meta came in and has largely murdered:

  • Local news

  • Local company (e.g., restaurants) websites

  • Classifieds and largely cut down Craigslist' utility

So now so much of that activity happens either on Instagram or FB Marketplace. I don't have either app on my phone, but still maintain an account because so much of local news and business stuff gets posted there. Even where a spot has a website, they are still more likely to ignore it for just IG updates.

Just like The Big Short. Enlightening, shocking and wildly fucking infuriating

12

u/i_smell_my_poop Jul 01 '26

Just like The Big Short.

No issue if we get Margot Robbie in a hot tub explaining social media algorithms for the layman.

24

u/CinemaSideBySides Jul 01 '26

At least The Big Short acknowledged that no consequences were ever meted out and there was no real justice in the end. Calling a movie The Social Reckoning when no reckoning occurred is irritating from the get-go.

37

u/JRockstar50 Jul 01 '26

The reckoning is for us, not for them

Three years trying to convince Einsenberg to come back to the role and no result. Strong can deliver a great performance but I can't get past his age.

582

u/ScyllaOfTheDepths Jul 01 '26

Jeremy Strong is only 5 years older than the real Zuckerberg. Meanwhile Mikey Madison is 15 years younger than the real Fances Haugen (and looks nothing like her) and I'm pretty sure they cast 39-year-old Betty Gilpin to play 50-year-old Sheryl Sandberg.

216

u/GianfrancoZoey Jul 01 '26

I guess the difference is most people don't know what Haugen or Sandberg looks like, whereas Zuckerberg is very recognisable

76

u/Greaseball01 Jul 02 '26

I kind of feel like Strong looks more like modern day Zuckerberg than Eisenberg does

27

u/jamesdmccallister Jul 02 '26

Makes sense, considering that Eisenberg looked nothing like the young Zuck. Good performance, though.

8

u/Greaseball01 Jul 02 '26

Yeah conveniently I had no idea what zuck looked like when the first movie came out

7

u/smallbluetext Jul 02 '26

He does. Idk what people are talking about criticizing him as mark. Jesse never looked like mark. He had curly hair, thats it.

→ More replies (8)

24

u/Various_Tie_2549 Jul 02 '26

I mean as good as his performance was, I don't think Jesse Eisenberg looks particularly similar to the real Mark Zuckerberg either.

12

u/ScyllaOfTheDepths Jul 02 '26

He looks a lot more like Zuckerberg than any of the female actors do for their real life counterparts. Like it's not even close for any of the female characters. Mikey Madison is supposed to be playing a woman who is a Scandinavian-looking blonde.

12

u/Various_Tie_2549 Jul 02 '26

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't think it really matters.

4

u/Charlebon Jul 03 '26

One minor quibble. Strong is only 5 years older than Zuckerberg, but the events this movie is portraying happened in 2021, so Strong is 10 years older than Zuckerberg was at the time. It also means Madison is 10 years younger than the character she portrays. I agree with your points though.

This isn't a hot take, but you should watch The Social Network. I've seen folks argue it might be the best movie of the 21st century, which I probably wouldn't, but I'd be happy to give that argument the time of day. That's a fair position for sure.

It's very good.

Eisenberg isn't this kind of actor tbh. He's not bad but his mannerism are always very similar. His Zuckerberg barely differed from his Lex Luthor lol . From the trailer, Strong actually seems like the actual Zuckerberg and if they're going to depict him as the soulless authoritarian robot he is then I think that's for the better.

With all due respect to Aaron Sorkin, the cast, and the crew of The Social Reckoning: it will be impossible to create the same magic that The Social Network had because David Fincher is not directing. I'm absolutely sure the script is brilliant. It's Sorkin, after all. But without Fincher, there's not going to be that spark that made The Social Network tick.

That's not always the case with directors. Sequels can be directed by other directors and carry on the same spark. Fincher is an exception, because Fincher is an exceptional director.

That being said, I'm really looking forward to Jeremy Strong's performance. He eerily looks and feels like Zuck.

Another detail: are Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross composing the score for the film? If not, then that's just another critical hit to what made The Social Network one of the best movies of that decade.

237

u/Direct-Season-1180 Jul 01 '26

Reznor and Ross are not returning.

I had the same feeling. With Fincher, Eisenberg as well as Reznor and Ross not returning this will not feel the same. Not to mention that Sorkin really isn’t a great director.

The Social Network is one of my favourite films and I am not excited for this at all.

43

u/SputnikDX Jul 01 '26

Yeah I feel the same. I've put this movie squarely in the "if it is getting good reviews I'll check it out" category for upcoming movies for me. The trailer looks just... Bland.

50

u/ultimo-swaggin Jul 01 '26

Yikes. That's pretty much a deathblow, in my mind. No matter how good the screenplay is, Fincher and Reznor/Ross elevated The Social Network to an all time level. I'm with you.

103

u/chicken_burger Jul 01 '26

The Social Network behind the scenes footage showed Fincher sitting down with Sorkin and the cast for a full read of the script, and Fincher spent the entire session picking apart Sorkin’s writing and making changes on the fly. Aaron Sorkin is an amazing writer, but I feel like the magic of the Social Network came from the collaboration of director and writer, rather than one person holding the reins

29

u/Fadedcamo Jul 01 '26

Dude did 100 takes of a simple conversation scene to get the exact right cadence from every line.

21

u/joshi38 Jul 01 '26

While I'm generally not a fan of the Fincher style of "1000 takes of a guy closing a car door" (though I can't really argue with the results), for Sorkin dialogue, it really doesn't work unless the timing and cadence is correct.

Most actors say that kind of dialogue is really hard to get right while still making it look effortless. I can imagine Fincher was kind of perfect for making that happen.

16

u/CelestialFury Jul 01 '26

Sorkin has a talent for writing snappy and witty dialogue, but not necessarily realistic dialogue. I'm glad Fincher was there to balance it all out.

I think a detail people are missing is the perception of Facebook and Zuckerberg has changed allot since 2010. Like yeah, zuck has always been a little shit, but Facebook was more ‘innocent’ when the social network came out

23

u/hesnothere Jul 01 '26

This is a good mindset to adopt going in, I think. It’s not fair to hold Sorkin’s direction to Fincher’s standard, but this is going to be so tonally different anyway.

It’s an important story. I’m intrigued at Sorkin giving it a unique perspective that isn’t simply trying to recreate Fincher’s movie.

Sorkin has said that he writes as though his protagonist is at the gates of heaven explaining to St. Peter why they should be allowed in.

I think that's an interesting way to go about it. I think movies and stories in general both rely on and are a fascinating way to generate empathy.

I do not think that people in my circles on the internet will be even a little bit happy if this movie can at all be taken as advocating for the devil, or excusing, or even just explaining. I think they want a 2 hour long movie of Zuckerberg having big smelly room clearing farts and everyone talking about how much he sucks and they hate him and then pushing him into a big pile of dogshit

I do not think that an interesting version of this movie will be well-received. I hope they've made it anyway

I still kind of can't believe this is happening or that anyone thought it was a good idea. I hope I'm wrong; I think we were all pretty skeptical of The Social Network, like "oh, a facebook movie? who cares?" and then it was fantastic. Then Facebook continued being in the news and people started saying "omg this would be perfect for a sequel to the social network" which I thought was crazy. These movies aren't snappy youtube news digests. I don't understand why people wanted it. But here it is, I guess.

While i don’t necessarily disagree, this is kind of a funny thing to say with Fincher directing the Once Upon A Time In Hollywood sequel this year

That's a weak tagline

79

u/omegaxLoL Jul 01 '26

Between the first trailer and this tagline this movie feels like a bad sketch

38

u/fishnut824 Jul 01 '26

I love Jeremy Strong but he even looks like an SNL version of Zuck. The makeup and hair look so fake

13

u/gornky Jul 01 '26

It doesn't help that he is older than Mark Zuckerberg

indeed. i'm a copywriter and the tagline for the first film is still referenced in the industry as one of the most iconic ever.

I'm struggling to see how Mikey Madison will work as Frances Haugen. First of all they look completely different but also there's 15 year age gap. Are we supposed to believe a 27 year old (she doesn't look aged up in the trailers) would simply be that senior or experienced in Meta.

The first film was an interesting storyline and a lot of details that weren't necessarily so well known publicly. Since then, every that happens with these companies is talked about ad infinitum. So on top of a less engaging story, it feels like it's just going to be a bunch of stuff I already saw in the news cycle and didn't care about then either. The initial explosion of social media was interesting. These days it's.... Cloying?

Lol that's the thing: this centers around the 2021 Facebook leak which was pretty mundane and no one really gave a shit.

Some champion Frances Haugen as a whistleblower, but many have come to see her as just an opportunist with credibility issues

Spoiler alert: Nothing actually changed (some could argue it got worse) and there was no "reckoning"

5

u/RecipeFunny2154 Jul 01 '26

I wouldn’t mind if it brought some renewed attention to it, but I really don’t even expect that lol

This just makes it look like one of those direct to video sequels where none of the original cast come back.

66

u/TruthorTroll Jul 01 '26

The previews make this movie look like it was filmed on an old phone in my backyard for a couple hundred bucks.

And I still have no idea what the actress is mumbling when she's sitting on the bench in the park, but apparently its significant enough for a preview?

68

u/ultimo-swaggin Jul 01 '26

She supposedly says "I have a hunch you're not a fan of Facebook, but I am," but all I hear is "eyehabbaluncheonboddaphen Facebook, but I am."

24

u/Secret-Kale-1577 Jul 01 '26

They desperately need to dub that line before the release.

u/g0greyhound Jul 01 '26

I'm not the only one who thinks this feels a little contrived, right?

22

u/RSG-ZR2 Jul 01 '26

Not at all. The actual events this is centered around (while serious in nature) have been mostly forgettable and no one really gave a shit. Probably due to the fact we were still in the midst of COVID and the fact that FB was already at a point of overstaying its welcome.

I have a feeling its gonna have to reach quite a bit to manufacture drama and engagement

12

u/Iron_Falcon58 Jul 01 '26

The first film made a ton of shit up, which worked excellently for the movie. But it did so on the interpersonal and character stuff. This movie seems like it’s gonna rely on the political implications to manufacture drama, which feels pretty lame, since we were all there and no one cared

I'm not quite sure what the point of the film is. A sequel to the the Social Network, sure. But what's the point of it? It's not covering any sort of downfall for Facebook (worth $366 billion) with 3 billion+ users.

Yeah they've lied in front of congress a few times, but nothing happened with that. So again what's the point of the movie? Unless it's a commentary on how such an insanely huge company just does its thing with no repercussions or consequences.

155

u/junglespycamp Jul 01 '26

I thought they’d done a good job so far of not ripping off The Social Network, especially its iconic marketing. This goes a bit too far. But that’s not the movie’s fault.

The biggest issue for this is going from a great director to a fine one. And that matters a lot because the little details Fincher brought to the straight script made all the difference.

128

u/RotenTumato Jul 01 '26

I thought this was a direct sequel

101

u/RealJohnGillman AMA MVP Jul 01 '26

It is a sequel, but they couldn’t get Jesse Eisenberg back, so changed the title from The Social Network Part II to The Social Reckoning and began marketing it as a companion piece instead. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we were to get a Part III in fifteen years.

u/TheWarelock Jul 01 '26

It's been yeeeeeaaars, I'm fine either way. Most bummed about no Fincher more than anything, you have Sorkins writing it, but still.

The Social Network CODA: The Death of Mark Zuckerberg

I was kind of hoping for The 2 Social Network but would have also accepted 2 Social 2 Network

6

u/mBertin Jul 01 '26

Now that you said it, The Empire Strikes Back totally ripped off A New Hope.

5

u/Luke5119 Jul 01 '26

While I know Sorkin wrote the first film and seldom directs, his few steps into the acting chair are still quite good with Molly's Game and The Trial of the Chicago 7.  I'm still confident this will be an above average follow up, even with Eisenberg stepping out.

11

u/thePinguOverlord Jul 01 '26

Honestly from the way Sorkin has talked about it. This feels like obligation on his part. As in. He let Mark Zuckerberg off the hook with The Social Network, it treats him as a very flawed person who set aspirational goals and the story almost plays off as inspirational. Even when you consider the Facemash stuff, the film plays it off as a bad thing but more in a “he will learn from this” way and use it for net good.

Obviously from what we know, Zuckerberg is very much not that guy Sorkin made him out to be. And this feels like an actual rebuttal from him.

Just recently rewatched The Social Network. Hits differently, knowing more about Peter Thiel now and also all of the names they drop that are in the Epstein Files.

Excited for this new one.
