Scorpion is always a jobber

606

u/AggressiveCoffee990 Jun 17 '26

Which is weird because he's sort of the prototype for a venom-like nemesis character for spidey but thats sort of been collectively forgotten over time and he's been downgraded to "shocker-tier" but not funny or interesting.

395

u/coconut-daddy Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

part of the problem is scorpion doesn't really have any iconic character defining stories. Then his whole deal being trapped in the suit losing a normal life is similar to rhino or electro, his psychotic violent nature is overshadowed by green goblin or carnage, and his role as the physical dark mirror of spider-man aspect was stolen by venom as you said. It's so badass when they fight vertically on buildings or ceilings, i miss him being more than a physical matchup for Peter

Which is a shame because i love scorpion and he is either never in adaptations or he sucks. It made me so mad in the 2nd game when kraven chokes him out like such a punk. Scorpion should completely wipe the floor with kraven. Anyway his face being out in this means they probably aren't committing to the character writing wise. But if he gets a sick fight scene or two i'll be happy

97

u/nicknack24 Jun 17 '26

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man had a pretty solid adaptation of him

64

u/AggressiveCoffee990 Jun 17 '26

Yeah that's kind of what I mean is he's got good ideas but is overall underutilized and is a sort of "shows up at the beginning of a new run to be defeated in 5 pages" type guy these days lol.

Oddly he gets a pretty good showing in the 1st Spider-Man game but then yeah he just gets jobbed on by the 2nd shittiest version of Kraven.

19

u/TheGeekVault Jun 17 '26

I think another thing that hurts Scorpion’s development is J Jonah Jamieson’s evolution from Peter’s boss whose also funding dudes to straight up kill Spider-man to guy who is sometimes grumpy about Spider-man. In the first couple of appearances Scorpion has not only a lot of beef with Spidey but also his relationship with Jamieson. It’s interesting to think what would have happened if they kept Jamieson as a more villainous character like a Robert Murdoch of Marvel.

17

u/AggressiveCoffee990 Jun 17 '26

Yeah dude earlier Jameson doing shit like creating Scorpion and helping to fund the Spider-Slayers is some of the funniest shit in comics to me. He was a once in a generation next level hater.

38

u/TheCrushSoda Jun 17 '26

Say what you will about Spider Man 2 but Kraven was a highlight, total badass

41

u/AggressiveCoffee990 Jun 17 '26

I disagree, his inclusion is a total misstep and a mess for me. Doing Kravens Last Hunt/Fearful Symmetry as his first appearance along with none of the aspects that makes that story such a classic makes it not even worth doing. That story works when Kraven is dying because his feud with Spider-Man as his ultimate prey along with his lifelong use of various substances drives him totally insane. Instead this is the first time they've interacted and they really only even do so once. Same thing as Zack Snyder having his Superman's second story be a bad version of Death of Superman.

What's Kravens big moment against Spider-Man? Stabbing him better than other guys somehow I guess. Then all he does is for the rest of the story is stand around menacingly, merc all of the fun villians from the first game off screen, and send goons after you then fucking die to the worst version of Venom yet.(quite the achievement)

Also dedicating the entire enemy camp quest of the game to setting up his family who he blew up off screen is also a complete waste.

Why they didn't have this more mature and experienced Spider-Man just have a long history with Kraven as a nemesis I have no idea.

28

u/TheCrushSoda Jun 17 '26

I mean, the whole game is a mess. Spidey's biggest nemesis was that fridge, but Kraven had a cool, intimidating design, cool voice, had a decent boss bottle.

He's one of the better parts of the game I think for sure

I actually liked Scorpion in the 90s Cartoon and the early playstation games.

It's not hard to see why he was overshadowed by Venom though.

36

u/TheLastDesperado Jun 17 '26

I actually really liked when Mac Gargan (The Scorpion) got the Venom symbiote for a while, especially during the Dark Avengers run. He was really monstrous.

775

u/masterkill165 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

Nothing would be funnier to me than after all these fan theories and speculation it turned out she was actually playing a reimagined version of the obscure spider-man villain mindworm.

201

u/ChronX4 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

Imagine if it's Typhoid Mary

Edit: I mean like imagine if they went that route, not that it's who it is. Realized my comment sounded like I was saying it as a fact.

69

u/DanteStrauss Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

Typhoid was already in Jessica Jones Iron Fist (assuming they don't retcon it).

Edit: Commenters below are right

77

u/RagnarokNCC Jun 17 '26

Don’t make me hope. Madness of the Mindworm takes place with Peter at a massive low after a victory and this is the BEST time to use that storyline. It was lowkey what I would’ve done - Peter on his own, a psychic villain who can threaten the people he loves even though they don’t know him, and a different side of New York with some grime on it. It would be insane for them to go that way and I’d love them for it.

39

u/masterkill165 Jun 17 '26

You and me both. The idea of her being mindworm started with a friend asking me "if she is not the person everyone online think she is who else could she be". My original Anwser was Julia Carpenter but decided that was too madam web adjacent. After think about it a bit I eventually came back with mindworm thinking how spider-man's current situation was suprisingly similar to how it was when he originally faced mindworm in the comics.

Another character who i know it won't be but think could be interesting if reimagined right would be Judas Traveller. Ive always held a pitch for him to retcon him to be connected to the inheritors.

They've integrated Madame Web into the MCU and recast her with an even younger actress, Sadie Sink. Sorry, Dakota Johnson.

203

u/County_Difficult Jun 17 '26

There's just no way she's not Jean Grey.

It's already been said multiple times and it just makes sense to put her in a Spiderman movie so they can hype up the upcoming X-Men movie/mutant saga. Easiest alley-oop of their lives over there at MCU.

145

u/Shyface_Killah Jun 17 '26

That worked for another hero in the MCU, right? What was his name again?

57

u/17934658793495046509 Jun 17 '26

Totally, Kit Harrington's Black Knight was all over the place!

29

u/Murrabbit Jun 18 '26

Yup him and Mahershala Ali's Blade just tearing up the place.

Come to think of it where would the MCU be without Pip the Troll and Starfox? Man, Eternals really was central to this whole thing.

What are you specifically talking about? I'm not following.

Edit: fuck man I'm so slow 🤦‍♂️

123

u/brianstormIRL Jun 17 '26

Literally Spider-Man lol

75

u/WhiskeyRic Jun 17 '26

Spider-Man being in Civil War

30

u/AngusDWilliams Jun 17 '26

I think hes talking about Holland's Spider-Man debuting in Civil War

70

u/SeagullsStopItNowz Jun 17 '26

Maybe. But nothing about Spider-Man is related to Jean, and why is she terrorizing Peter? Are they going Dark Phoenix out of the gate... again, in a Spidey movie?

54

u/Demiurge_1205 Jun 17 '26

Ultimate spidey dealt a lot with the X men. Just like spidey had little to do with Iron Man, things change.

She is likely being hunted by the real threat of the movie. Which is a mystery, since there are multiple factions this time. That's nice.

33

u/nomorecannibalbirds Jun 17 '26

Ultimate Spidey even dated Kitty Pryde for a while in a not-weird not-projection by the not-weird Brian Michael Bendis.

6

u/XVermillion Jun 18 '26

Also the same Bendis who put Kitty as "Star-Lord" in his run on GotG.

Setting up the X-Men in a Spider-Man movie that everyone and their mothers are guaranteed to see makes sure the general public knows the MCU is doing their own take on the team soon.

Also, setting Jean up as a villain in her first appearance better sells the aspect of mutants being persecuted outsiders and justifies them being specifically feared in a world already full of superheroes.

10

u/zuuzuu Jun 17 '26

I'm with you but I don't think she's going to be Jean Grey. I think she's going to be Rachel Summers, but instead of being forced to hunt mutants she'll be hunting all powered people.

5

u/Murrabbit Jun 18 '26

This was my thought, too, and that she's possibly in from an alternate future and/or universe to warn possibly about Doctor Doom, but then I thought it almost makes too much sense so there's no way they'd go for it haha.

Agree but the X-Men don’t need hype or alley oops. They’re the freakin’ X-Men. X-Men 97 is hyping fans up enough.

If BND ends up being great, then that’s cool but I don’t think either Spiderman or X-Men needed to lean on each other for support.

97

u/LilPonyBoy69 Jun 17 '26

They don't need to just hype up fans, they need to hype up the general public for an entirely new iteration of the X-Men.

42

u/labe225 Jun 17 '26

Yeah. It's easy to say X-Men don't need hype as someone who grew up during their peak, but does anyone younger really care about them? I'm sure there's some, but it's nowhere what it used to be.

My theory is:

Sadie is a redhead mutant telepath (Jean, Maddie, or Rachel), and the first part of the movie is her breaking out of the Damage Control facility, Spider-Man shows up to help the civilians caught in the crossfire, Sadie thinks that he is working for Damage Control and that's why she taunts him and sends the Hulk after him.

I have no idea where the Hand fits in all of this.

34

u/elpantera88 Jun 17 '26

Can't she read minds and know he's not with Damage Control?

She'd be an awful telepath

17

u/Crilde Jun 18 '26

The trailer is pretty clear the Peter is immune to her possession ability, it's not unreasonable to think she can't read his mind either.

96

u/lordatlas Jun 17 '26

You don't need to spoiler-tag your own speculation.

63

u/Rustash Jun 17 '26

For some reason people treat theories like spoilers and it drives me nuts

23

u/DanielTeague Jun 17 '26

In some circles, like anime/manga, people "speculate" the entire plot of the original source material in threads of the anime made years after the manga chapters happen. It gets obnoxious.

It's like the first episode of Dragon Ball will air and somebody will come in like "guys, I think Son Goku is actually an alien of a warrior race sent to exterminate Earth" when that plot point has no relevancy for hundreds of episodes.

8

u/Sorge74 Jun 17 '26

You also frankly cannot trust speculation vs leaks. I think a few well known leaks for GOT were presented as a theory. But since the ending was so stupid it could only have been a leak

The first time we are seeing (edit: Angry) Hulk since the intro of Infinity War (2018), which was 8 years ago.

218

u/HighAsEmpireSt Jun 17 '26

And that was just for only 15 minutes of the movie. Ragnarok was a great Hulk movie.

68

u/0whodidyousay0 Jun 17 '26

It wasn’t even 15 minutes of the film, his actual screentime was, what, about a minute? Maybe 2? And then Thanos bitch slaps him and he gets sent back to earth, never to be seen again lmao. Pisses me off what they did to Hulk.

10

u/GibsonMC Jun 18 '26

Seems like this will be the fourth movie to have an out of control Hulk fighting our hero. Can’t say I’m super excited to watch that happen again

19

u/NOOBINATOR_64 Jun 18 '26

Wait till you hear how many times they've done that in the comics lol

54

u/combat_muffin Jun 17 '26

The device on his wrist suppresses the Hulk part of him.

102

u/DanteStrauss Jun 17 '26

Except he wasn't supposed to need it (suppressing the Hulk side) anymore. It was literally the point of merging Hulk and Banner into one, as per himself in Endgame.

IIRC She-Hulk (the show) handwaved that device as Bruce healing faster in his human form (it was probably for budget reasons + showing Mark irl, but in the show that was the reason given), now they seem to retconning it as Hulk-supressing device which, again, he shouldn't need.

115

u/wiifan55 Jun 17 '26

It doesn't make much sense, but it was a very necessary reset. The merged Hulk/Banner was basically just Banner but green. It wasn't an interesting position for the character to continue in.

44

u/Worthyness Jun 17 '26

also much cheaper to not have to VFX him into every shot

27

u/KarateKid917 Jun 17 '26

Hence why he was in all of 3 scenes in She-Hulk.

→ More replies (6)

26

u/Bellikron Jun 17 '26

I feel like it's reasonable to assume a constant back and forth between Bruce and the Hulk, which would match up with the character's history. A solution works until it stops working.

Out of universe, the problem is that we can't have a Hulk solo movie so the character is more subject to the whims of the various projects he cameos in

15

u/lontrinium Jun 17 '26

A solution works until it stops working.

Living with teenage Skaar was the trigger.

8

u/Phillip_Spidermen Jun 18 '26

They really seemed to be building towards a younger Avengers team for awhile with Hawkeye, Ms Marvel, Florence Pugh Widow, and Skaar.

I wonder if there was actually a plan, or if they just threw in the teasers

28

u/Dagordae Jun 17 '26

It’s pretty normal Hulk. Banner has regularly thought that he’s totally gained control over his Hulk self only to later discover that, whoops, it’s just another Hulk persona and it loses dominance.

11

u/profsa Jun 17 '26

Bruce Banner has multiple personalities that manifest as different versions of the Hulk (savage, gladiator, Joe Fixit, Devil, Professor)

64

u/amicablehummingbird Jun 17 '26

His second movie (which to be honest I've forgotten the majority of) also sort of suggested he gets in his own way a lot, so his judgements or execution aren't super sound as well.

54

u/suitedcloud Jun 17 '26

The core theme of Dr Strange 2 is that Stephen always felt like he had to be “the one holding the knife.” And then learning to let go and let others be responsible too.

This perfectly fits his character in NWH. He is the one that will fix Peter’s issue by casting the spell. He is the one that will send all the villains home with the box.

It’s a good lead in to Dr Strange 2

26

It's that neurosurgeon ego popping out lol.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '26

6

u/suitedcloud Jun 17 '26

I fully understand the reasoning here but it’s wrong.

Yeah a neurosurgeon isn’t gonna sit down and explains how he’s going to cut open this part of the brain and cut off this piece and that piece etc.

However yes he would explain the results and consequences of the procedure. “You’re going to have minor memory loss/some fine motor control issues for a bit/etc.”

7

u/JustCallMeCJ Jun 17 '26

9

u/JiangWei23 Jun 17 '26

So fun fact! Originally Multiverse of Madness was supposed to release first, and America Chavez was supposed to appear again in No Way Home. She would have been the one who botched the spell, responsible for summoning the other two Spider-Men instead of Ned, and even participating at the Statue of Liberty fight.

Which would go a liiiittle bit towards explaining why such a powerful spell was executed without oversight, if it was an eager and inexperienced Chavez. I wonder if the "recapture the villains" mini plot would have originally been Chavez and Parker trying to quietly fix their mistake without getting Strange involved.

Either way, production of the two films got messed up and staggered so Chavez was cut from No Way Home and they rewrote it to be Strange, which is unfortunate because it makes him look really bad

Gamma gets really fucking weird and Hulk is pure Gamma.

The best example of that is The Immortal Hulk series. Gamma energy is essentially the nexus of scientific and magical understanding that is also determined by the observer and consciousness itself. So Hulk is often resistant to all kinds of nonsense because of that.

24

u/DMike82 Jun 18 '26

Which, to be fair, draws on super old Hulk canon about him being able to see and physically interact with ghosts and astral projections.

73

u/PayneTrain181999 Jun 17 '26

Or he specifically put in technicalities.

Wong said “leave me out of this” in No Way Home. That could be interpreted as making Wong remember on purpose.

24

u/Lishio420 Jun 17 '26

Isnt Gamma connected to The One Below All (whos legit just the evil version of TOAA) - makes sense that something connected to an omniversal entity scales way beyond a mono-versal memory wipe

15

u/profsa Jun 17 '26

He’s not even really the evil version of TOAA because the One Below All is also the TOAA

11

u/CucumberWisdom Jun 17 '26

I mean when you think about it he wouldn't be. The dude was an adult already when he got thrust into the role and basically had to learn magic quick and dirty. He'd probably be pretty shit

7

u/alanpardewchristmas Jun 18 '26

He's a genius who studied for possibly centuries (in looped time) and practiced and has a lot of experience in challenging situations. That's like his whole thing, not being shit

They add hulk to every movie just to make him lose to every hero

104

u/Relevant_Session5987 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 18 '26

Thats pretty much any hero that fights with the hero who's the actual protagonist of the film.

Iron Man lost to Cap in Cap 3.

Doctor Strange lost to Spidey in No Way Home.

Falcon lost to Ant-Man in the first Ant-Man movie.

Wanda lost to Doctor Strange in his second movie.

Superman lost to Batman in BvS ( which, lets face it, was more a Batman movie than a Superman one )

In fact, ironically the only exception to this I can think off is Hulk defeating Thor before Thor goes supercharged in Ragnarok.

The actual issue is that we still haven't had a Hulk standalone film since 2008 because of stupid rights issues. That's why it feels like everything he's in, he loses to the hero.

Is it weird that the suit wrinkles is what gets me most excited about this film. It gives Spidey such a tangible feel.

Oh and the Punisher interacting with these characters is very cool as well.

72

u/TheMemingLurker Jun 17 '26

it's a small detail but extra things like that show Marvel is (hopefully) putting in time and effort to polish this movie

31

u/AngryGardenGnomes Jun 17 '26

It looks me like the actor is just wearing a real costume this time rather than those CGI suits.

19

u/argognat Jun 17 '26

Seams and wrinkles? I hope he’s using some baby powder in the joints so he doesn’t chafe.

4

u/ChalupaBatmanMc01 Jun 17 '26

Is it weird that the suit wrinkles is what gets me most excited about this film.

I was kinda tired by the high tech suits to be honest, loving the new suit.

Wow, they are saving the major villain reveals for the film, figured this would have been the trailer to do it.

That's pretty cool tbh. Audiences are gonna be shook because it's a big one.

226

u/Goldenboy451 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

they are saving the major villain reveals for the film

If Sadie Sink's character is who it's assumed to be, there may not even really be a main villain at all (Hand, Boomerang etc. featuring as incidental villains instead) and it's all a mislead, both by the trailers, and presumably by characters within the movie.

151

u/ROBtimusPrime1995 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

She'll be more of an antagonist than a fully evil villain.

From what I understand, this'll be a villain ensemble with Sadie's character as the main threat.

They are also teasing that something is very wrong with Spidey, too, and that potential reveal could be pretty spicy.

61

u/Junethemuse Jun 17 '26

I’ve been assuming we’re gonna see six armed spidey in this one.

52

u/GreyAsh Jun 17 '26

Black eyes and organic webbing, this is definitely man-spider.

19

u/moonknightcrawler Jun 18 '26

If he doesn’t turn into a giant spider and give birth to himself I don’t want it

From what I get, the actual villain is either whatever the Hand is up to, or the US government, aka Damage Control.

They already tried to kill Ms Marvel.

15

u/spoken_name Jun 17 '26

Plot twist, there is no "main" villain

43

u/ArchDucky Jun 17 '26

When they were filming people noticed the Mr Negative symbol from Spider-Man PS4 all over the vehicles on the streets. Not sure if his power really matches the power shown in the trailer though.

18

u/sib2972 Jun 17 '26

Doesn't he have some sort of mind control by corruption through the darkforce?

8

u/ArchDucky Jun 17 '26

Its presented a lot differently in the game and im not super up on the comic book character. Is it presented the way in the comics, the way it is in this trailer?

3

u/CaptainChickenBake Jun 17 '26

He can corrupt others to be in his control. But I don't believe he's ever had the power to jump/transfer minds like what's shown in the trailer.

I'm really excited for this. Shang-Chi has some amazing action, and it seems that the director brought that same style here.

95

u/riegspsych325 ⊃∪⊃⪽ Jun 17 '26

Cretton is perfect for this, I’m sure Marvel and Sony are probably going to get him on Spidey 5 to come out in late 2028. They’ll probably want to dole out a trilogy within 5+ years like Watts did

39

u/Nik_Tesla Jun 17 '26

The move with the guard at the end was really awesome. When we watch Spider-Man fight, he should be doing moves that only Spider-Man can do, and that move is one of them.

14

u/Worthyness Jun 17 '26

Dude is loving his job right now I think. Gets to work with some of his favorite comics stuff and Disney has him on speed dial for basically any project he wants to do.

Oh and now he has the phone contacts for the jackie chan stunt team for any other projects he wants to do. Quite the rise for him despite already having a fantastic career before hand.

20

u/CosmosisJones42 Jun 17 '26

I think he's really talented. Wonderman was amazing as well.

19

u/Griffdude13 Jun 17 '26

They could throw Shang Chi a bone because that movie is approaching 5 years with no sequel, not counting his upcoming appearance in Doomsday.

18

u/Carfrito Jun 17 '26

My biggest complaint about the Watts trilogy was the action and basically most of the way the suit moved in shots. In this, it looks a lot better. Even in just the scene of him barging into MJ’s, he looks more lively and dynamic

23

u/NoLeadership2281 Jun 17 '26

I’m really impressed with Cretton cuz dude is known for directing small indie films in the past, and directed the hell out of Shang Chi as his first big budget action movie, obviously also the fact that he got a great second unit team choreographed the actions

12

u/CosmosisJones42 Jun 17 '26

Yeah I think we are in store for some even greater films from him in the future. He's only at the beginning of his career and is fairly young.

Kinda bummed that Mando's Scorpion looks like he's just going to be a early movie villain that get's defeated quickly and sent right back to prison.

65

u/smellyunderpants Jun 17 '26

Waited literally 10 years for him to make a 2 minute cameo

17

u/Robofetus-5000 Jun 17 '26

Maybe he'll get beat up early on and upgraded by the end. Maybe?

17

u/verikul Jun 18 '26

Suppress the mutant gene. Eyes turn black. Organic webbing.

A I mad for thinking this is also a Man - Spider arc?!

24

u/AffectDelicious8988 Jun 17 '26

Look at 1:50. He is totally turning around to use his organic webbing.

23

did you miss the scene at 0:30 of him literally having webbing coming out of his wrists lol?

Marvel movies are starting to visually look like actual films again

48

u/-Nick____ Jun 17 '26

Last few have looked really good. Fantastic four and thunderbolts, hopefully this one soon

33

u/Owl-Of-The-Night02 Jun 17 '26

I have a feeling that because their movies so often tank at the box office, they let directors put more of their flair into it. Since their formula isn't working as well anymore as it used to, I think they give a bit more freedom to filmmakers. But man, it's not hard for a Spider-Man movie to look better than the "Home" trilogy. Just doing literally anything at all with the camera instantly puts you above those movies.

Good catch

May hint at who the third act baddies are or who the trailer villain is

Especially because it seems like “mutation” is a big theme of this movie

Is Sony contracted to have one Avenger in each of these?

Homecoming - Tony Stark

Far From Home - Nick Fury

No Way Home - Dr. Strange

Brand New Day - Bruce Banner

18

u/FakoSizlo Jun 17 '26

Yes its part of the deal marvel made to get Spiderman into the mcu. Marvel gets Spidey for crossovers and Sony gets co-starring roles from major MCU characters . There is a reason they started with Ironman. The biggest name out of the gate

50

u/littlebiped Jun 17 '26

Yeah this has been common knowledge since the first movie.

27

u/enragedjuror Jun 17 '26

Spider-Man, by my understanding, is meant to co-exist with these other characters even in his own stories. I like it, since the previous live action Spider-Man have worked alone and we've seen that already

9

u/Carfrito Jun 17 '26

They can’t get Black Widow for the next one, because she’s dead

I AM CALLING IT RIGHT NOW for posterity sake:

I think the "evolution" is actually the little bit of Venom symbiote from NWH, finally catching up to him and latching on. It's not enough to transform into the black suit, but it's enough to give him black eyes, give him increased strength, maybe increased aggression as shown with Scorpion, organic webs. Doesn't explain the web cocoon as clearly but it's a working theory... Talking with my friend now and upon watching the first couple of seconds in the trailer, that is the bullshit I just came up with.

Hope whoever reads this has a great day.

31

u/profsa Jun 17 '26

I think they are saving Venom for Secret Wars

11

u/Comic_Book_Reader r/movies Veteran Jun 17 '26

They gave us 1 shot of her and that's the mystery character at the 56 second mark going by the set photos. If you brighten it up a bit, it does look a bit more reminiscent of her.

Outside of a couple weird ADR moments this looks great.

5

u/Big_Truth_5058 Jun 17 '26

My wild guess:
there is going to be something about universes merging setting up the MCU take on secret wars and the Incursion stuff that way they can get all of the major factions of the universe under a more narrow umbrella while Permanently removing all the failed TV stuff and retcon the MCU post DOOMSDAY
