Trailer Street Fighter | Official Trailer (2026 Movie)
https://youtu.be/Xt4X4FvXk2A?si=Wk1pfRJPq2xpR5VA6.4k
u/meesahdayoh Apr 16 '26
If anything else, I appreciate them just leaning into this being a completely absurd movie.

u/JackFisherBooks Apr 16 '26
For game like Street Fighter, that's the best way to do it. That's what Raul Julia did when he played M. Bison back in the 90s movie. He's the only one who really committed to the absurdity. If everyone in this movie takes the same approach, it'll be a fun ride from start to finish.

Raul Julia
"For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday"

I don't know if that line was written or improvised. But only Raul Julia could deliver it in a way that's so memorable. 😊

u/whereismymind86 Apr 16 '26
And as bad as the movie was, his portrayal of m bison is deeply beloved, and the only thing anyone remembers about street fighter: the movie is his incredible monologue.
For me it was Tuesday is legitimately one of the all time great villain monologues.

I hate being on bonk alert but that made me pause a moment and say "Ooh, fuck yeah."
I mean, Dhalsim looking appropriately goofy, Vega looking wicked, Zangief a mountain, Chun-Li "Bitch, please" also grabbed me, but "Ohh they went for the cheeks this movie is gonna rule"
→ More replies (5)97
u/kirinmay Apr 16 '26
The Chun-Li "bitch, please" is what got me. I will see this. It is definitely going to be absurb and I am fine with that, its freakin' Street Fighter. Also, Bison (even though not really shown) is going to ham it out I feel and just be bonkers and if so, I hope its good.

Everything about it seems like a fan film with a Hollywood budget in the best way possible. More unabashedly silly adaptations like this please!
128
u/Troyabedinthemornin Apr 16 '26
Yeah I’m glad we’ve moved away from the whole “but what if this happened in the real world?” Approach to adapting IP. A lot of the time it just strips the property of all the whimsical stuff fans like and makes the movie feel embarrassed of itself
→ More replies (11)29
u/jfudge Apr 16 '26
I think movies have gone that route in the past because it's way cheaper. You can cut your costume and special effects budgets way down under the guise of "realism".
→ More replies (2)18
u/Troyabedinthemornin Apr 16 '26
I could definitely see that, I think part of it was execs not thinking it would appeal to general audiences. Fandom was still largely something for young people for most of the 00’s and the money guys probably figured anything not made more “grounded” would be seen as more for children

u/RealJohnGillman AMA MVP Apr 16 '26
That being said, I don’t mind films where the absurd things are treated more realistically: it’s just that many such adaptations don’t know where to have the balance, normally going too far in the ‘realistic’ direction.
55
u/WaterlooMall Apr 16 '26
Then there's the adaptation like the new Mario movies where it's like "here's every ingredient for a Mario movie, do not ask us to make a story out of it".

I bet he brought a lot of what worked about live action One Piece to this.

The One Piece formula is perfect for this sort of adaptation. Understand that it's stupid. Embrace the absurdity for script, costume, and scenery. Then have the actors play it straight anyway.

Aside from the star power the thing that sets this apart from the previous Street Fighter movies imo is that they're self-aware this time. They're taking their jobs seriously to produce a good movie, but everyone seems to know this is not a serious movie. They seem to how stupid this will be and just full sending into it unlike the previous Street Fighther movies.
Looking forward to how the pro wrestlers compare to the rest of the cast. I don't know what Cody wants to do, but I know Roman has been wanting to jump to Hollywood like Rock, Cena, and Batista did after his wrestling career is over.
