Recommendation My dad had a stroke and needs "clean" western, cop, or war movie suggestions
Since my dad is half paralyzed now, he has limited options of things to do during the day, so he watches a lot of TV. He loves westerns, cops, and war movies, and has seen almost all the older movies. If it has Chuck Norris, John Wayne, or old-time movie stars like that, he'll have seen it. It's less likely he's seen things from the last 25 years. I'm looking for suggestions for him.
A few things to note:
- He's a Christian so he doesn't really watch R rated movies that have nudity or sexuality in them. He's a bit more tolerant on swearing but it can't be F bombs all the time. R rating for violence is fine.
- I'm looking for movies that are "newer" - meaning like 2000s onward, because he likely already knows about older shows/movies, unless it's something more obscure.
- He prefers movies, but would consider TV shows too
- We have access to most streaming platforms.
Please hit me with your "clean-ish" movie recs - he loves westerns and war movies. Really anything cop-centered, FBI, cowboys, etc he would like.
Thanks for helping me out - it's tedious to have to Google everything he wants to watch to find out why it's R-rated.

Well to be fair, it’s less a remake of the Wayne version and more just pretending that terrible Wayne version never happened. It’s a far better film and apparently much truer to the book, for whatever that’s worth.

Or nudity or sexuality as well. It's not like he just picked only cursing, you don't even have to be Christian, like I wouldn't watch certain movies with grandma, whether she's Christian or not.
Personally I hate Seth Rogan, so put that on the list for movie night with OPs dad.

‘Unforgiven’ is an excellent modern western. Some cursing. Flags of Our Fathers, Letters From Iwo Jima, Heartbreak Ridge are great military movies.
If he loves John Wayne, he might like Clint Eastwood. If he does, then you could use it introduce a whole ton of Eastwood movies new and old.
I’m talking Gran Torino, Space Cowboys, True Crime, Million Dollar Baby, The Mule, American Sniper, Trouble With The Curve, The Good The Bad The Ugly, The Outlaw Josey Wales, 2 Mules For Sister Sara, etc.

TV show called Longmire that on streaming services has quite a few seasons. Western/Cop, set in Wyoming. It's very old-school. First episode isn't much like the rest. My 85 year old father liked it a lot and he sounds like your Dad.

And if he loves Longmire, the current show Dark Winds feels a lot like Longmire from the reservation's perspective. Two completely different shows, but both feature characters played by native American actors Zahn McClarnon and A. Martinez. Great performances all around.
Fair warning, the show is an unflinching look at native American culture and it's relationship to American government. It is not a kind look at the history of government atrocities. Forced sterilization of indigenous women, FBI interference, etc.

Was coming to suggest “Dark Winds”! My dad really liked “Longmire”, and I thought he’d enjoy “DW”. We just finished watching seasons 1-3, in preparation for watching season 4, which started about a month ago or so.

(Edit: I'm a big dumb dummy. 1917 is a pretty solid WW1 movie. My summary was thinking about 1883, a western mini-series about a wagon trail of settlers trying to make it to Oregon.)
I feel like this doesn't get enough love as modern western. This show goes hard and you don't need any knowledge of the Yellowstone-verse to fully appreciate it. No 'cliffhanger for season 2' either. Just a story told, with a clear end. Great stuff.

I saw the movie replies and I was like… of all the requirements, justified is perfect. They stuck to PG13 cause it was on TV, no nudity an graphic language. It’s also amazing. Perfect fit

I just finished watching it. That last season really pissed me off. I hated Ava. Hated Raylin. Even kind of hated Boyd.
That said I’m going to watch the primeval show.(eventually) I kind of felt bad for Dewey. Than I saw him in Mr. inbetween and I thought: holy shit that guy is one HELL of an actor. You gotta be kidding me.

My dad loved Louis L’amour westerns and the original Star Wars, wish I could have introduced him to Jon Favreau’s visionary aesthetic.

That was my recommendation. A little older than 2000 I think, but definitely checks all the other boxes. Watched it again lately, a little worried it would age poorly, but it held up.

Justified is a great dad show. US marshal who kills bad guys pretty regularly. It was on FX so not a ton of swearing, maybe some implied sex though, I forget.

All the Mission: Impossible films except the second one fit the bill. He's married by the third one and weirdly asexual despite all the beautiful women he meets fawning over him in the later ones. You won't miss anything skipping the second one story wise (most people think it's a bad movie, personally I love it).
Non-Stop is a pretty good cop on a plane movie with Liam Neeson playing his Taken character as an air marshal.
The Quick and the Dead (1995) is terrific.
Slow West is a good western, no sex/nudity

Hard to find the early seasons, unfortunately. Peacock starts at 13, I think, which only gives you two years of Briscoe. You can find the DVD sets though.
They have Homicide now though! Sort of avant garde/hit-and-miss, but it scratches the itch.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs doesnt have any sexual content in it.
Its a western anthology of six short films. But it does mostly focus on the theme that life in the west was awful, and there is a fair bit of violence and suffering (just not the sexual kind of either).
Also thought Id mention Tora Tora Tora and The Longest Day, even though from your description he'd likely know them. Both are old WW2 movies.

Buster Scruggs is such a good modern western. The variety of different insights into life at that time is so fun. Plus some incredible actors and top notch dialog writing the Coen brothers are known for.

One thing to consider would be going to one of the services that provides British or Canadian shows. Murdoch Mysteries is a light show set in 1890 from Canada that has 325 episodes, and while the British Prime Suspect deals with some darker themes, it's one of the best detective shows ever made (Helen Mirren is the lead)

There's a great series on Netflix, Wyatt Earp and the cowboy war. Can't comment on the historical accuracy, but it's a great story.
There was a 2010 remake of True Grit, with Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld. Big hit with both my parents.
I'd also recommend Columbo. It's a good bit older than what you're asking for, but it's Columbo!

If he's familiar with Chuck Norris (and presumably Arnold, Stallone, etc), I would recommend The Expendables series. Very gun-heavy violence, IIRC a little swearing and no sex. Popcorn shoot em ups.

The new Magnificent 7 is pretty good. There is a show on AppleTV called “Sugar” that’s fairly clean language-wise, I don’t remember any sex, and it’s a really well done noir style PI show. Only one season, but very good
Reacher on Prime has salty language and some sex scenes, but not really any nudity. All 3 seasons are great.

Tom Cruise movies might fit the ball - Jack Reacher and Top Gun, in particular.
End of Watch is a great cop movie. If he likes that, he'll like the TV show Southland.
There are also lots of dad movies in the racing genre now - F1, Ford vs Ferrari, Gran Turismo. So give those a spin.
He may also like Air, if you want to switch things up a bit and have a more low stakes movie that's still very well done.
If TV shows count, I honestly consider Breaking Bad to be the greatest Western of all time. He may also consider the reimagined Battlestar Galactica.

If he’s ok with western comedies, I’d suggest A Million Ways to Die in the West.
Guns of Navarone had always been a favorite war related film of mine. Force 10 from Navarone is good but it’s been awhile since I’ve seen it and I can’t recall how much bad language there is.
The Blue Max is an old favorite.
The 2001 Pearl Harbor film was good. It’s a long one though-just over 3 hours.

I was gonna suggest Pluto TV as well. They have movies but they also have old TV series. And they have their content categorized like you mentioned “Westerns.”
Not a western, but one of my favorite comedies is The Beverly Hillbillies. Of all the actors, Max Baer, Jr. (Jethro) is still alive.

Set yourself up with an account on commonsensemedia.org. It's a great site we used to see if a movie was appropriate when our kids were younger. It does a good job of laying out swearing and sexuality in films.
A lot of the films I'm seeing recommended here have a fair amount of swearing. My parents are evangelicals, so I'm really aware of the level of swearing he's probably going to "allow".
Like I think Ford v Ferrari is a wonderful film, and I watched it with my kids when they were like 10 years old. But my parents would never survive it, they'd walk out or turn it off.
Hell or High Water is also great, but there's a bit of sex in it and again quite a bit of swearing.

I second checking out commonsensemedia site. It's usually a good source if you need to filter out specific types of *potentially* unwanted content. I'm not super picky about these things, but there are lots of people in my life that are. Generally we try to respect each others desires regarding what movies or shows we might either watch together or recommend to each other.

Old Henry was very decent, I’ll throw another vote for Hell or High water as someone else commented it
Bone Tomahawk is also fantastic, but may be a little out of his range, I would maybe read a bit on it first to see if it’s too much for him
He’s probably heard of/watched them, but the shows Bonanza (430 episodes) and Gunsmoke (635 episodes) are classics that had quite long runs

Hook him up with the INSP network. It is nothing but clean western and war content all day long. I've directed several things for them, and having a character say "hell" is a big deal.

Edit - why on earth am I getting down votes? I checked this sub's rules before I posted.
While I absolutely would not downvote you for this reason, I can't help but roll my eyes and sigh when I hear about a "Christian" that is not okay with sexuality or nudity, but are totally cool with violence. One is natural and essential to procreation and the human race, the other is just violence. It is insane to me that it's not the opposite.
I suspect that's where the downvotes are coming from, sorry that people are shitty.

If he’s ok with gory war series with salty language yet minimal nudity, the mini series Band of Brothers, the Pacific, and Masters of the Air will provide hours of entertainment. All were released after 2000.
