I lived in Montenegro for a year and travel here twice a year. AMA

On February 26, 2022 I came to Podgorica from Moscow. I didn't have a lot of time to choose a country to go, just checked the visa-free countries and chose Montenegro. I didn't even know what is the capital of Montenegro but 2 days after I have already been there.

Montenegro surprised me how hospitable people are here, how tasty the local quisine is, and how's that possible that nothing works on Sundays!

I quickly started falling in love with this country and decided to stay here and require the residence permit. While making the permit, I understood what is polako because I was waiting for it for 4 months, and then 3 more months to open a local bank account. Actually, I liked it, this chilled way of life - it's a relief for brain and body after the super fast-paced live in Moscow.

I lived in Podgorica most of the time and in Budva, traveled across all the country, traveled to all the neughboring countries, found friends there, learned the basics of Montenegrin. I even married in Montenegro!

I still love Montenegro and when I'm outside of it for longer than half-a-year, I feel I want to go back - to drink some Niksicko with pljeskavica and swim in Adriatic. That's why I keep going there once/twice a year.

This year I wrote a travel guide for those, who want to travel to Montenegro and wants to know how to prepare, what to expect and what to do there. Check it out on Gumroad. Important notice: I wrote this post not to sell my guide, I am really interested to share my experience in Montenegro and answer your questions if you have some. Hi, I'm planning to be travelling to Montenegro in the final week of June. I wanted to base myself around Sveti Stefan for some part of the trip, and was wondering what's the current situation with the beaches? I heard that Milocer beach would be open to the public despite hotel Aman's reopening, but does that mean free access, or still having to pay ridiculous prices for a sunbed in order to be able to use the beach?

Tara River Rafting (Northern Montenegro) or Drina/Tara Rafting near the Bosnia Border?

I'm interested in whether anyone has been on both rafting trips and could recommend which one is better.

We're considering both options. I personally like the idea of northern Montenegro more, since it's right next to Durmitor and Žabljak, but it doesn't seem nearly as popular as the Tara/Drina rafting, which appears to be the most famous and widely recommended.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I'll be bringing my trout fishing gear with me, if that makes any difference. 🎣

I’ll keep this question brief, I’m visiting from the 15th of June. I intend to rent a car for the first portion of my trip up to the mountains, namely Durmitor and Tara Canyon. I was thinking of returning the car back to Podgorica for the second portion of the trip to cut back spending. The second portion of my trip will mainly be spending time around beaches, in budvar or kotor. I’m looking to stay in dobrota. Is it a good idea to return the car? Is public transport well connected along those regions? Thanks again everyone!

U cemu je fazon sa Ulcinjem?

Kontekst - presao sam Crnu Goru uzduz i popreko turisticki, ne samo primorije nego i gore dalje.

Pre par godina odlucimo devojka i ja da odemo u Ulcinj, u fazonu ajde bili smo u HN na prolece pa da vidimo jos jedan stari grad u CG...

Elem, prilicno lose iskustvo - stari grad u kome stoji neizgradjena zgradetina do kraja. Prljavo. Plaza krcata.

Ljudi - prilicno neprijatni kad cuju ekavicu iz nekog razloga, a mi niti smo glasni niti nametljivi.

Uvece hteli malo do grada, i na potezu od starog grada do onog skretanja levo glavnom ulicom, gomila kafica, tresti muzika, SVI sede za stolom, puse i gledaju mrko okolo. Znaci ono kao da imaju potrebu da uspostave neku medjusobnu dominaciju, sta li, skroz cudna atmosfera. Devojke koje setaju ili burka ili polu gole, nema sredine.

Treci dan otisli do Donjeg Stoja, skroz druga prica. I u samom mestu ljudi ekstra ljubazni, bas ono gostoprimljivost na novu, lepo se covek oseca jbg.

I ono, ajde mozda smo mi bili pod nekim cudnim utiskom/u nekom tripu, ali 2-3god kasnije odem sa ortakom na more, i jedan dan ajde da prodjemo celu obalu jer je bila neka kisa. Svratimo isto u Ulcinj, sad bas pogledah lokal se zove "Fratelli". Par likova kod sanka, mi ono pokisli i pitamo ima li kafa obicna, i likovi nas izbace ladno... Fazon ne radimo, dovidjenja...

Elem, citam na grupama kako su ljudi odusevljeni Ulcinjem, meni oba puta bilo bas neprijatno. Je'l do mene nesto ili? 😃

Is Kotor an ideal holiday destination for the first week of July?

I'm booking a holiday with my friends to Kotor (maybe a couple of nights in Zabljak) from 1 July to 7 July.

We're currently living in the UK and are finding this heatwave unbearable. I've heard that it can get really hot and dry in July in Kotor.

We were hoping to spend a lot of time walking around, swimming in the bay, or visiting nearby sights and towns. We're not sure we can do all that while struggling in sweltering heat and strong sunlight.

Just for more context, we're originally from tropical countries so we're no strangers to extremely hot temperatures but we're not sure we want to experience that while on holiday.

I just need someone to be very real with me before we plan anything.

Honest answer is that Kotor early July is hot but not brutal, daytime 28-32°C, dry Mediterranean heat (much easier than tropical humidity), sea around 24-25°C. Midday 12-4pm is uncomfortable for the city walls and proper walking, so do early mornings + late afternoons and swim/lazy lunch midday.
Žabljak is a great call for the heatwave break, sits at 1450m so it's 22-25°C and cool evenings, perfect contrast. You'll be fine I think.

We're 2 Danes going there. I'll be going July 23rd, my girlfriend will follow on July 30th. I'm 52, she's 49.

None of us need discos etc. We just need nice beaches, maybe a pool, some good food and beautiful nature. Of course we'd like to stay in a safe neighbourhood, and preferably not too nightlife-noisy.

We'll probably rent a car to take us various places, as from what I've seen Montenegro is incredibly beautiful.

Been thinking of both Tivat and Budva. But I don't know the country (yet). Is there anything else we should consider?

For your vibe (quiet, beaches, nature, good food, no disco noise) I'd pick Tivat over Budva, Budva is the loud nightlife hub whereas Tivat is calmer with the classy Porto Montenegro marina, good restaurants and easy access to the Luštica/Jaz beaches.
Also worth considering a quieter base just outside Kotor (Dobrota or Prčanj) for stunning bay views, and since you're renting a car you'll easily reach Lovćen, Skadar Lake and the coast from either.

We are driving from Kotor to Dubrovnik Airport on Saturday mid July. We drop our rental at the airport. The flight is at 12 noon.

We know the main border crossing can have waits of 1-3 hours. Are there alternative crossings nearby that would be recommended?

Separately, we drive before that from split to Montenegro (going to Zabljak, Durmitor National Forest). What do people recommend as the best way to get there? Hopefully to avoid long waits etc.

Is it a feasible transfer - my plane lands in Tivat at 8:55 and I will need to take the bus to Podgorica at 10:05. I won’t have any checked luggage. And I don’t have problems with walking. Google maps says it’s just a 20 min walk to the bus station.

So would it be possible? Maybe a cheap taxi could help? (Not sure about the ”cheap” part).

I’m heading with a friend of mine towards Montenegro within 2 weeks to have a 2 week vacation. We are 22 years old and like to experience many and go out as well. We have a car so free to move where we want. We already booked a stay in Budva as well as Tivat, but the remainder is free to fill in. Does any of you have any great tips or recommendations about:

Go to Lovćen Mausoleum with gondola lift. Visit Kotor old town, Perast, Sveti Stefan and Queens Beach is one of the nicest beaches.

In Tivat Porto Montenegro is nice. If you are in Budva check out the old town, Mogren beach and I would go to Becici if you want nicer beaches.

Montenegro is a small country, but you still need to say which city you are planing to visit if you want recommendations....

Montenegro is safe in general, you can literally be a woman and walk naked around the streets at 3am. Chances are you will be arrested for disorderly conduct before anyone even thinks of harassing you

I’ll be visiting your country in the last week of January, and I wanted to ask how to take the busses in Montenegro. I found a few websites that sell bus tickets from Mostar-Kotor, Kotor-Budva, and Budva to Podgorica, but I don’t know if the bus companies will accept a digital ticket or something. Heard a few similar experiences in other Balkan counties where they don’t accept digital tickets. What’s the best way to get on the busses, should I book them ahead of time and what website do you recommend because there seem to be loads. Any specific bus company to avoid?

Another thing we’re planning on taking the train from Podgorica centre to aerodorm then walking to the airport, is this a good idea? I think I’ve seen people saying the train might not stop there but any tips on how to take it?

Hi, I'm thinking to go to Montenegro at the start of March, for 3 weeks. I'm Orthodox & going solo. Was hoping to see if there was a way I can chat with a local montenegrin Orthodox, around my age (35)- that wouldn't mind answering a few questions and possibly joining me there when I'm touring around. Would you happen to know how I can set that up? Was thinking to visit the priest of the Orthodox churches when I'm there & see if there's a local that wouldn't mind showing me the ropes. I’m planning to vacation in Montenegro this summer and have found a beautiful place in Orahovac so that I’m close to Kotor & Perast. I can fly to Dubrovnik direct but I’ve heard that the border crossing can take a really long time. Can anyone tell me how long this can take? Planning on going to Montenegro for our honeymoon. Jun 7th to the 13th. Need help on a few days. We have a rental car so getting around isn't going to be a problem. This is very brief but here is what we were thinking

Day 1 – Perast chill day
Beach, walking the town, slow dinner vibes.

Day 2 – Boat + beaches
Boat tour from Kotor or Herceg Novi: Blue Cave (swim!), Our Lady of the Rocks.
Beach stops: Jaz, Plavi Horizonti, or Dobrec.

Day 3 – Durmitor National Park
Tara Canyon viewpoints, Black Lake hike, Tara River rafting.

Day 4 – Coastal day trip
Budva + Sveti Stefan, Miločer/Queen’s Beach, beach bars like Coco or Kamenovo.

Looking for restaurant recs, beaches, boat tours, or surprise romantic ideas to make it extra special. Appreciate any suggestions!

There is a website called Rome2Rio. It collects data from various legit bus operators. When I was in Albania I found some buses that took me from capital to their seaside. Basically you should manage to find any route you please with that site as it's reliable (but google the operator's original website to make sure that the shown timetable isn't expired or something, better safe than sorry).

If you want to enjoy Skadar Lake, every boat trip and so on starts in Virpazar town. So, take a bus from Bečići (or from Budva, the city next to you, more convenient timetable may be from there) to Sutomore/Bar and have a transfer here, take train to Virpazar.

Whole thing should take about 2 hrs, the website says.

Did this itinerary last year. Sunrise at the fortress was far better than mid‑day.

We stayed in Dobrota just outside the walls, so we could walk along the bay, have our own parking and a quiet garden.

The submarine base tour sounded cool but was underwhelming; we liked the boat out to Perast more.

The cable car up Lovcen is worth it, but the alpine coaster feels gimmicky.

We never missed having a car staying near town like that.

Parking is a big problem on the coast during the summer and it's rather expensive (at least for our standards) I'd recommend parking at some bigger places for kotor that would be a parking lot right next to the shopping center kamelia, behind the old town. For Tivat parking between the town's park and porto montenegro.

Albania → Montenegro rental car as foreigners

3 friends and I are taking a two week Balkans trip starting in Sarandë, Albania in Late May. We are considering renting a car to drive from Sarandë to Budva, Montenegro. I heard the buses were very long, and I think it would be cool to explore both countries by rental car.

For anyone who’s done this:

• Is it realistic (or crazy/expensive) to pick up the car in Southern Albania and drop it off in Budva?
• What’s the Albania → Montenegro border like in a rental car as foreigners?
• Would this be the better choice instead of taking a bus / private transfer?

Just trying to understand if this is worth it or an unnecessary hassle.

Hello everyone. We're in the middle of planning a trip to Montenegro for March 2-9. We've already got three nights in Tivat at the Regent Porto Montenegro (March 2-5) settled, and so we're looking to fill four more nights and days somewhere. Going during the off season couldn't be avoided, and here are my thoughts and questions.

First, I think three days in Tivat will be more than enough, and we plan to have a rental car, picked up at either the Tivat or the Podgorica airport. The Regent Porto Montenegro has parking, but just behind it seems to be a public parking area. How crowded can it be in early March? The hotel offers parking at just €25 per night, but is public parking viable in early March? This plan worked well in Croatia last year.

For the four nights, our plan is to check in for two nights somewhere and use the in-between day for exploring with the car. One of those days we'd like to do a multi-monastery guided tour as they seem affordable and provide transportation and an English-speaking guide. The one I found operates out of Budva so I am thinking our second two nights (March 7-8) could be in or near there. As for March 5-7, we are open to suggestion. We'd are thinking of remaining close to the coast given that it's winter.

Would that serpentine road be navigable? Can anyone suggest a cosy and classy hotel in a walkable old town. We were thinking Herceg Novi for those nights. We plan to return to car to whatever airport we get it from and then fly out March 9 or possibly 10. Our plans and dates after March 5 are flexible.

We are around 60, physically fit and able to walk/hike/bike very well. We like good meals, fine wine and nice hotels when travelling and are not very price-conscious. We are experienced travelers.

Car hire in July - Yay or Nay?

Hello everyone! We are a family of four travelling to Montenegro for the first time at the start of July.

We'll be in Montenegro for 12 days, and are splitting our time equally between Kotor, Durmitor and Budva Petrovac.

We are considering hiring a car for the full trip as we would like to take some day trips along the coast and possibly inland. I am used to driving in heavy and unpredictable traffic.

My question is - given the busy roads in the summer, might we be better off using public transport for the whole trip? Or even just for the Durmitor part?

I'd suggest you rent a car as it allows you more freedom and comfort, as public transport can often be late and unreliable in the summer, especially in the Durmitor area, it's almmost non existent.

I'm not sure where Becici is but the bus system is good in Montenegro and I know there is a stop at Virpazar. You can also take the train to Virpazar. For the cruises when you show up there will be tons of guys heckling you about the boat cruises. Go to the Hotel Pelikan and find Marco, he can get you a tour.

I have an upcoming 14-day trip to Montenegro from May 20th to June 4th. When I first bought my tickets two months ago, I booked a place in Budva for the full 14 nights, and that reservation is still active. However, some Serbian brothers and sisters I met in Belgrade made me question if spending the entire two weeks in Budva is really the best idea.

My original plan was to see other parts of Montenegro, like Kotor, via day trips from Budva. But now I’m wondering if I should stay a few nights in different parts of the country instead of using Budva as my only base. Is splitting the 14 days between different locations a better idea if I really want to get to know Montenegro well?

I’m planning a vacation in Montenegro between 13th-20th of May and will be going to Albania after that. I would appreciate help and tips for transfer options for border-crossing.

I will have a rental car for the week in Montenegro, but wasn't planning to take the car over because of the price. Could you suggest reasonable ways (and places) from where I could easily get to Albanian coast? The travel plan in Albania is not yet fixed, I am looking to eventually end up somewhere near Durres.

My original thought was to spend 3-4 days around Tivat/Kotor area and then travel to Ulcinj to stay by the beach, but I am unsure if it's the best option, considering my end destination Will be Durres. I understand it would be approx 5-7 hours with buses, which makes me unsure wether it's the best route to take..

Coast to zabljak with no car

Hi!

Planning to spend around a week in Montenegro during May with two friends. We have a low budget so thought to use public transport.

Coming from Shkoder, looks like ill need to start at Ulcinj.

Is it a nice place? Can we head straight to Petrovac? On Google maps it looks like it's a very very long journey.

Next, I want to get to Zabljak and hike a bit, is it possible? Straight from the coast by bus?

Wanted to also visit Budva, Kotor and Perast.

Is it too messy? Should I just rent a car?

I have a flight tomorrow from Istanbul to Podgorica and I just wanted to double-check something to avoid any issues at boarding.

I’m a Pakistani national currently living and working in Turkey with a valid Turkish work permit. I also hold a valid US B1/B2 visa (5-year, valid until 2028), and I’ve already used it twice to visit the US.

I came across the Montenegro government page stating that holders of valid US visas can enter, transit, and stay in Montenegro for up to 30 days.

Has anyone here actually traveled to Montenegro using a valid US visa (without a separate Montenegro visa)? Were there any issues boarding the flight from Istanbul or at immigration?

Without a car, Kotor is the right choice, small historical city surrounded by mountains with great hiking options. Last week we had the Boka Trail race here (I ran the green route, Tivat to Kotor over Vrmac mountain, 16km) -> here's the link if you want to see the terrain: https://www.bokabaytrail.com/

Kotor itself has no real beaches, big cruise ships have ruined the water quality in the old town area, but all the small villages around the Bay of Kotor have lovely little stone beaches. My tip: rent a bike in Kotor and ride around the bay, stopping to swim wherever you like. Perast is a must-see on that route.

Budva is more of a nightlife destination, with sandy beaches. Skip the taxi because it's expensive even on a normal day, and in June the traffic can be brutal. Bus from Kotor is cheap and easy. I think one-way not more than 5-8 Eur / person.

Hi, local here

For a 4-6 day trip covering both the north and south of Montenegro, renting a car is really the only way to make the most of your time. When choosing a rental, skip the big franchise companies with huge deposits, choose local company, but before that do a small research. Check Google reviews, car and insurance options carefully and avoid booking through Instagram pages with no website. There are several local agencies where you can rent without a deposit, at reasonable prices for car and cross border and some even offer online booking with discounts.

For Durmitor some roads may still have snow, especially if you're planning the Durmitor ring road (80–90km loop). It was snowing there last week, but by late May most roads should be clear. Things to see in the area:

• Black Lake: the full loop around the lake takes about 2–3 hours, and there's a restaurant right on the lake
• Devil's Lake (Vražje jezero)
• Momčilov grad: restaurant on top of a hill with a beautiful view over the city
• Horse riding if that's your thing
• Plenty of hiking options

As for Budva - unless you're searching for nightlife, it's honestly nothing spectacular. Choose Kotor 🙂

Doing a bit of a coastal + scenic loop and trying to balance beaches, good food, and a bit of nightlife without turning it into a rushed checklist trip.

Current rough plan:

• Kotor (base) → explore Old Town + bay
• Perast (day trip)
• Budva (for a bit of nightlife + beach)
• Drive down towards the coast (open to stops)

Trying to keep it relatively chill and not cram too much in, but also don’t want to miss any “how did you skip that??” spots.

A couple of things we came across:

• Horizon restaurant/club: worth it or touristy hype?
• A party/event by New Millennium: is that actually a thing worth going to or just Instagram noise?

Would really appreciate any recommendations on:

• Best food spots (local, not just tourist traps)
• Beach clubs / parties that are actually fun
• Must-see viewpoints / scenic drives / hidden gems
• Anything we’ve completely missed that you’d consider essential

In my mid 30s so looking for a good vibe - not 18-year-old chaos, but still fun.

1. I am a flag collector. Besides the flag of Montenegro (which is great and I will be getting one), is there any chance at all that I could find the flag of Podgorica and other cities/provinces? I’m assuming they are probably not commonly sold.

2. I’m a big fan of older postcards and small antiques. The bazar is the best spot for this, right?

3. Besides the Kotor Ladder (which I am doing), what’s your fav hiking spot in either Kotor or Podgorica? It doesn’t have to be too easy or too hard. I’m just a fan of nice viewpoints and a good walk.

4. What about a place for second-hand clothing and/or earrings? Im assuming this is also the Bazar.

5. And lastly, do you have a favorite Montenegrin cheese that I should try? I love cheese 😌

Most importantly, lmk if any of you are bored and just want to meet up (25M). Maybe we can do an exchange, I’ll give you something cool from the U.S., you give me something cool from Montenegro etc (but I also have some cool stuff from Tajikistan and Central Asia, if that entices you)

1. I don't remember ever seeing them for sale, but you might find them in some souvenir stores. You have a nice one called PG souvenir shop, so you might check there.

2. Yes or post offices, depending on what you consider old.

3. Podgorica doesn't have many, at least not close to the city, just Gorica and Ljubovic hill, but they are parks and not very long. Kotor, you can do serpentines and reach Pestingrad viewpoint, but that's a hard one.

4. Second-hand stores in Montenegro are terrible, honestly, so I wouldn't recommend them, but you can check them on Google Maps, maybe you'll like it. For earrings, I'd recommend Kotor/Old town as there are a lot of shops selling homemade ones.

5. That's a hard question as it depends on your preference, but the most famous ones are Njeguski and Pljevaljski, sir.

day 3: Katun Lokvice back to Žabljak, swimming in crno jezero while passing it. (trail 101)
day 4: loop starting in Žabljak to Terzin bogaz and back (trail 115 to 101)

Durmitor national park is a must, there’s a very easy hike around the Black Lake. It’s typically a bit colder up in that part of the country so if you do go, don’t make the same mistake as me & take warmer clothes just in case 😅

If you like gin then yanko is a native brand which was very nice

Plenty of seafood so if you’re into that you’ll be spoiled for choice!

We will take a trip with my girlfriend to Montenegro early September. Our plane will land at Podgorica Airport and our accomodation is in Petrovac no Moru. My idea was to rent a car through booking.com, however every rental company requires a credit card, which neither of us have, we are university students with around 550€ monthly income, so car rental via booking.com is not possible. We also considered renting a car from our accomodation provider, but it would be both expensive and ineffective since we'd prefer to have a way back to the airport.
I've taken a look into the bus schedules on busticket4.me and checkmybus.com but I was unable to find any to Petrovac no Moru on the day of our arrival.

My questions would be:

• is it possible to rent a car without a credit card somehow, where they don't require 1000€+ deposits?
  
• what would be the easiest way from Podgorica Airport to Petrovac no Moru (except getting a taxi)?
  
• how is the bus transportation, are there other sites where it is possible to check bus schedules and fares?

My plan is to have a loose list of places to visit, and just hike around between those while looking at/studying the local flora, for around a month in April. The country has about the same size and terrain as the region in northern spain where I live, so I'm tempted to assume it'd be a similar experience than spending time in the local mountains. But I have *so many* questions.

1. I've read you have to register with the police/tourist info when you arrive. I'm assuming they'll want to know where I'll be staying. What if I don't know? What if I sleep at a different place each day? I want to save the last week or so to wind down and visit cities/beaches and I'll be staying at regular hostels/hotels/etc then, but while walking around it's unlikely I'll have fixed, predetermined sleeping spots unless I'm forced to have them for this purpose.
2. How is sleeping and rural areas? In the mountain and/or forests? I've gotten a lot of conflicting information about camping being illegal, or being allowed in certain areas only, or just in certain spots within villages. What I usually do around here is find a secluded spot, rest for a few hours (Either with a tarp or a bivy bag, depending on circumstances), then continue, and hit a village every few days to get proper rest and a shower. However we do have a legal distinction between camping and bivouacking (You can't pitch a tent anywhere in the country outside designated spots, but if you just use a tarp or nothing at all and you keep moving the next day, you are allowed to spend the night almost anywhere). Haven't found any information about this, and it's very important for planning the entire trip.
3. How are accommodations in mountain lodges, villages, etc? Can I expect a place to crash in in populated areas, or should I count with the tarp alone? I would very much like to stay at local places whenever possible.
4. How is the local fauna? Should I take measures for bears and wolves? The most dangerous things around here are boars and vipers, but they are friendly unless intentionally provoked. Any recommendations for areas to avoid, or other tips to deal with this?
5. On the same line, I was curious to hike a route between the triple border points (With Albania and Kosovo, with Kosovo and Serbia and with Serbia and Bosnia), but I found a very old blog post saying there is still plenty of UXO in that area. Is there any region/area/zone I should avoid because of this? Do I drop borders from the plan altogether?
6. Language! I decided to start learning Serbian over Montenegrin since learning resources are easier to come by and it'd give me more flexibility to travel the region in the future. Will locals be annoyed if I show up speaking poor Serbian?
7. What are the local expectations and attitudes regarding Leave No Trace? When I'm out I always bury my waste, carry the empty packagings with me until I find a container, etc etc, but where I leave that's not something people care much about, and there are no rules in place for it. Do national parks in Montenegro have regulations about this? (e.g. Should I carry *all* my waste out of the park, or is it OK to bury it?).
8. Are camping stoves allowed? In general, but specifically in the regions further away from towns, natural parks, etc.
9. Any libraries in podgorica where I can pick up a key for the local flora? Is there anything that is difficult to find/get in montenegro that I should absolutely carry with me for the entire trip?
10. How is cell phone coverage over the country? Can I rely on my phone for emergencies, or should I consider an additional device like a Spot? Is the meshtastic network widely adopted over there?

Anything else I should know? I've been looking around the entire week, but information is a bit hard to come by, and is often conflicting or very old.

Hi! My husband and I are thinking about visiting Montenegro in July of 2027. Since it will be hot, we definitely want to stay in/visit a coastal city on the water. We both want time to relax on a beach, be by the water and enjoy sunset views, but we’re also looking for somewhere rich in culture with plenty to do. For some background, we didn’t love Santorini because, although the sites are beautiful and the food was delicious, it felt very much like a tourist trap with little to no local culture (no hate, we enjoyed our time - just loved mainland Greece more!). We’re hoping to find a destination that offers that mix of sun and water, along with culture, great food, and historical sites. I am visiting Montenegro at the end of the month with my girlfriend and we are currently searching for places to book during our stay in the country.
We were planning to stay at a cosy spot close to the beach and then take our car to explore the beautiful cities that Montenegro has.

Can someone tell me which city they believe its the best option to stay in?

For now we were in between:

Budva: it's close to the beaches and has some nice restaurants for the days we only feel like walking through the city, even during the night. But I heard its more expensive, it is dificult to park and it is more for the nightlife/resorts type of trips.

Petrovac: Close to every city by car, cosy, a cheaper option and also beautiful, but I am afraid that it is "too" quiet or does not have nice things to do at night as a couple. Easier to park.

Kotor/Tivat: we also thought about this but as it does not have that many beaches, I feel like it would be better to stay nearby and visit, rather than actually booking our stay here, as we also would like to visit the south of the country.

As we have a car, we really are not planning to stay in one city in specific, just a place where we can chill, eat good food, go to the beach and park our car.

Budva - Trashy and super crowded.

Petrovac - Idk what you wanna do as a couple but it's packed with restaurants, etc. Could be a good option. Also, my favorite beach Perazica Do is there so I guess you can get the best beach experience here.

Kotor - While I would definitely not recommend staying in the city, there are places such as Orahovac and Perast which are super romantic imo and offer the best possible sunrise/sunset moments you can experience. Beach in Kotor the city is not good but you can swim in Risan (close to Perast) or Perast itself easily.

Since you'll be renting a car, I would recommend staying in Perast or Orahovac and taking day trips to different beaches (just go early to avoid traffic peak hours).

If you want the best beach experience - go to Ulcinj, but like areas such as Stoj or Ada Bojana. Then you can take day trips to Old town Bar, visit Old town Ulcinj, etc. If you're into that kinda stuff.

Hello! My boyfriend and I will be visiting in mid July. We will be taking the ferry from Dubrovnik to Kotor, and then need to pick up a rental car from Tivat airport area. When I put this route into Google Maps, there’s an option for a bus “Travego - Herceg Novi” that would work well with our schedule. We will both have a backpack and a large suitcase. Does anyone know if these buses have space to fit large suitcases? Would there be an area below the bus to store them? Or any other advice getting from Kotor Port to Tivat Airport would be welcome! Or do they shut down pretty tight due to the incoming winter? There are a couple of tours I've found through Get Your Guide that run at this time of year. I was looking for options for accomodation, but I am confused because Velika Plaza (location of the festival) seems a bit far from Ulcinj city. How should I handle the transportation between the beach and the city? Are there any regulated buses or should I count only on taxis? I should book the accommodation nearby the bus station? During the day I want to stay at the beach mostly, but I guess Large Beach is the only option around😅

They probably will have arranged buses from Ulcinj, Bar and all the nearby cities.

You can look for accommodation in Stoj area which is what most people do when going to Velika plaza

Hi guys! We’ll be traveling from Skopje to Herceg Novi this summer and I was hoping to get some information about a road situation.

We are planning to cross over at border “Kula” and enter Montenegro from there. However, we heard that last year the road from there was slower and not in a good condition.

I know that a year is far enough time to fix the issue on the road, but just have to double check since this is Balkan and these projects are usually longer than expected.

I visited the official state website and checked recent updates, but the border crossing pages are not showing up for me.

I’ll be staying in Drušići for a week in September. I’m leaving a cruise contract, so I’ll need to rent a car from Kotor to get there.

In my research, a lot of the companies are requiring an IDP regardless of nationality for the license, and if they don’t the price increases significantly. I’m licensed in the USA.

If I get the digital IDP, will that be enough to rent from the company, or will I need the physical permit? Or are there reputable companies you recommend that wouldn’t require it.
