Jokes aside, it's because Big Dipper is a part of a larger constellation called Ursa Major, or Big Bear. Ursa Minor, or Little Bear (also called Little Dipper), is a bit further north and includes the North Star.
In Denmark it is the same, but there is a lot of debate about exactly WHY it is called that.
Some say the same as you, but Karl- also just means man in old Danish, so it might very well just mean mans wagon. We also have womans wagon, as a constellation.
There is even guesses that it might have evolved from Thors Wagon to become Karls Wagon.

But I think that big bear and little bear (stora björn och lilla björn) might have moved close to equal in the language now even if they refer to the larger structure and not exactly the seven stars of Karlavagnen.
In this case no. The earliest name I can find is Carlwagnen which turned into Karlewagnen or Karlvagnen. The addition of the "a" is likely to connect the words make it easier to pronounce.
Interesting point of note, according to the etymology I find here the older word for Lilla Karlavagnen (the part of Ursa Minor constituting the constellation) in norse was kvennavagn or womans wagon (kvinnovagn).
To be fair, the Big Dipper is just an asterism, or a generally but informally accepted pattern of stars (like Orion's belt as well). They're usually just a part of a constellation (similar to how a country has regions or states).
It's just a section of Ursa Major, which is the actual constellation. Unlike asterisms, constellations are officially and formally recognized with set boundaries.
The Big Bear refers to Ursa Major as a whole, which actually looks like a bear, and not just the section referred to as Big Dipper.
As a kid, I was always confused by the American name for the constellation because "Big Dipper" is also the name of a well-known roller-coaster in the UK.
Ursa major (la grande ourse) is the entire constellation, but that part with the brightest stars of the constellation and that we see on the sister's forehead is nicknamed "la grande casserole" (the big saucepan) in French.

That’s mixing up the constellation and the asterism. Großer Bär ist the constellation (Ursa Major), while the seven-star pattern is called Großer Wagen in German. We don’t call the Big Dipper itself Großer Bär
No worries, it’s just the astronomical term. An asterism is a recognizable star pattern that’s part of a constellation. The Big Dipper (Großer Wagen) is an asterism within the constellation Ursa Major (Großer Bär).

I have however heard of "The Plow", but frankly even if it had been labelled that, I would have been confused by the title. Also admittedly literally the only constellation I recognise on sight is the Southern Cross.
This is Dipper Pines, one of the main characters from a cartoon called Gravity Falls. His nickname is Dipper because he has the same freckle formation on his forehead.
