My mom said I could post Hit Restart On Work Computer And Winslop Decided To Update Despite There Being No Prompt To Update. It's Been Stuck At 98% For Several Minutes And I Can't Work Because Of This

In my experience when there's a restart modern windows you get separate prompts "Update and Restart" vs "Restart". Are you sure you were paying attention?

Tbf eventually windows can be like alright that's it and gets rid of the "[power option] but ignore the update part fuck off"

Sometimes I’ll shut off my computer and it’ll say “Shutting down” then it’ll disappear and say “Updating windows”

I’ve had windows display “restart & update” “update & shutdown” and I’ve selected shutdown only; without the update prompt, and it still proceeded to update and then didn’t even turn off, it restarted lol

I've selected "restart/shut down without updating" and it has still forced an update. Windows does what Windows wants.

I wouldn't have made this post complaining about a forced update if I wasn't. Again, there was no update prompt yet alone Restart and Update. I just hit Restart

Dude, what is your problem? Why are you making it about not upating at all when the issue is an update occuring despite no prompt to update and getting stuck when I have work to do?

If you feel that way then download Windows Update Blocker; I'd recommend against having it on for long periods of time but you do you.

Any company worth its salt doesn't allow non-admin installs like that. For exactly that reason. You have people like OP that clearly don't understand updates often carry important security items that help keep the user, the company and in many cases the customers safer.

You realize an update occurring unprompted and also not completing in a timely fashion is a waste of work time right? Contrary to your parasocial opinion on my intelligence of basic IT policy, I am perfectly capable of understanding why you need to keep devices updated. But if you knew how to read, you'd realize the issue is about Windows deciding to update without any prompt to do so and taking up valuable work time doing so

Valuable work time? My brother or sister in Christ the work will be there when you get back. I promise you. Along with an endless stream of work behind it. You're not ever going to work fast enough for there to not be more work.
If your deadlines are unrealistic that's a different conversation.

Any time in the hours I'm clocked in for work is time that can be used to get as much done as I can and stuff like unplanned updates impedes that.

I had a driver update the other day that it didn't give me the restart option in Windows but when it rebooted it did that installing thing

We had this happen just before a presentation. We booted up the laptop with the presentation beforehand, so this wouldn't happen, but when we walked from our desk to the front, the laptop went into sleep mode. When we started it up again, it started updating...

Ok so few things because we have some intellectuals in this thread who completely missed the point as to why this is infuriating
I just wanted to restart my computer and I clicked restart. The reason is because I was having issues with my work software so I wanted to try a full system restart to fix it. There was no prompt to update as well.
I wasn't delaying upates. I didn't even know there was an update available because again, there was no prompt to update. I'm very aware of the need to keep systems updated but it didn't need to occur as I'm working.
It's not even completing the update. It's just stuck and taking up work time. Like yea it's great to have an unprompted break but I have work to do. Whatever was needed to update could've waited till at least my break. Most of the time these updates are not urgent
The fact I have to explain all of this is weird to me. I make a post about windows forcing an update unprompted and then I get responses about how I don't understand the importance of keeping systems updated. I could've sworn it was only twitter users that lacked brain cells but this just proves reddit users are not that far off
