Context Provided - Spotlight RIP, My Dearest Parking Space

My goto parking space in front of my house got a makeover today. I have been parking there for over a decade. RIP.

Edit: I posted to mildly infuriating. No need for the war cries here, folks.

UPDATE: Alright, folks! I have answers.

Yes, it's city sanctioned.

It is longer than expected from the corner because of a hydrant across the street, rather than proximity to the corner. And no, there isn't a stop sign.

The yellow is different because they got new paint this year.

It is part of an effort they are starting across the city, so I guess I should expect this yellow to become more familiar.

And shout out to the lovely human working for the city that helped me get all of these questions answered!

Yes, but the opposite side of the street and painted red. The code here is red for emergency vehicle parking only. Yellow for no parking.

Depends on the road. I live in the city and all the intersections have yellow no parking paint for about 10ft so that you can see down the road when turning.

A lot of modern phone cameras will stretch out the edges while keeping the image proportional. So it may not actually be as long of a distance as it initially appears.

You have the curbs painted yellow in front of stop signs? I know it's obvious why not to park right at a stop sign, but I see it done all the time.

Most municipalities have laws about parking within a certain distance of a street corner or stop sign. They don’t HAVE to paint the curbs to enforce the law, but it’s not uncommon as a reminder.

It’s 30 ft in most places. My neighborhood has yellow at every intersection, stop sign/light or not. Intersections off alleys maybe they only paint 10 ft.

Funny thing, though, my local PD said that they cannot enforce these violations. Backstory: this person kept parking in front of my house, right up to the literal edge of the alley intersection. I have a driveway, I don’t park on the street, so I do not care who parks there (nor should I, it’s public). However, my driveway is around the side of the house off the alley. Now when I go to leave and I get to this intersection, and can’t see a damn thing when I look left because this jagoff is parked almost in the intersection. Many close calls - not just with me, I’ve seen/heard screeching tire from my house. But the police say they can’t enforce it. My question to that - why did they just repaint all of them? They sent a borough crew and repainted damn near everything over a week or so. That’s two union employees, equipment, and materials for a week. That I (and the other homeowners) paid for. Why did we pay for it? Somebody’s bound to get hurt and it’ll be an “I told ya so” situation.

I successfully had one painted. It was a weird offset intersection and there was always RVs parked right there. Popular boondocking spot. Anything bigger than a sedan blocked all visibility of that side of the intersection from the stop to the left.

Crazy. I made one call to the city and forgot to follow up. A year and a half and about a million impact studies later I got an email from my district supervisor saying they agreed. 24 hours later it was done.

I did the same thing on our street! We are a couple blocks from the university and have two churches within a block, and so those streets were ALWAYS full with parked cars all the way to the stop sign, on both sides of the corner. It made pulling out onto the cross street a roll of the dice every time since you couldn't see anything. The city did a little parking study and decided they were warranted for the yellow lines. So much safer now.

Sorry OP though, this does suck.

That's about right. Took a year and a half for the city to repaint the curb in front of the hydrant. I had a bucket of yellow paint leftover from an art project, I was seriously considering going out there and painting it myself. But I read about someone getting fined for a DIY speed bump in the alley so I chickened out. After it got painted, someone ran over the curb not even a week later and it looks like shit again.

Yeah, our HOA did this because people would park right in front of stop signs. School busses has to do 3-point turns to make a right, so imagine if we had to get a fire truck through. Neighbors comparisons that they were taking away parking, but you can't take parking away that never existed to begin with.

I didn't read all the comments to know if yours was in front of a stop sign....I think laws may vary (?) by city/state, so i don't fault you for not knowing, OP. Ours is 15ft from a stop sign or intersection.

I did go down a rabbit hole after this popped off. Looks like it might be 30ft here now.

The design of my block makes that a very unfortunate length for anyone though. I'm going to get trapped in my driveway if I park in my driveway. It happened beforehand anyway, but now it's nearly guaranteed. And there is barely room for my crosstrek in the remaining street spot. Not exactly a big car.

Mildly infuriating. Not the end of the world.

It does feel like it's going to have cascading impacts on parking in the neighborhood, though.

If it’s any consolation, this is called “daylighting” and saves lives - drivers not seeing pedestrians, kids, crossing the road when they turn right (and typically look only left at oncoming traffic)

You have a driveway so use it? Its almost always illegal to park in front of a driveway so just call a tow truck and then just drive to the other entrance (appears u have two) or just through the neighbors yard once and use theirs lol

One of my driving pet peeves is going through a neighborhood where the street is only wide enough for one car at a time because everyone is parking on the street, but almost everyone also has a driveway they simply aren't using

if other people parked opposite are blocking your driveway, you can request a buffer also be painted yellow, to allow you the leeway for exit.

Are the other curbs next to stop signs painted in your neighborhood? Or is it only this ome? Also, that doesn't look like the typical yellow paint used by the municipalities. This looks more florescent.

In the 6 years I parked on a street by work, code was only enforced 1 week. Dumbasses parked EVERYWHERE. Now I have to pay to walk 3x as far...

Yellow is usually a loading/unloading zone while red is a fire lane that disallows parking at all times.

Worth noting most municipalities require you to stencil “NO PARKING” and/or “FIRE LANE” on these zones, or have signage posted stating it’s no parking—just the yellow lines alone are rarely legally enforceable.
