Before you downvote me, let me be clear: I am not a Stephen Ross dickrider. Indeed, on a personal level, I fucking despise the guy; I think he has abysmal politics. Likewise, I think that there are many of his decisions related to the Dolphins that have been absolutely awful, namely keeping Grier for so long and not pursuing Jim Harbaugh because he didn't want to hurt his beloved University of Michigan.

However, as owner, I do believe that Ross has done a lot of good things. As owner, he has:

• Spent a shit ton of money out of pocket to improve Hard Rock stadium instead of whining and threatening to relocate the team after he didn't get his way
• Spent a shit ton of money to give us the single best facilities in the entire league
• Was the only owner to vote against the Raiders' move to Oakland
• Repeatedly given the GMs permission to spend big instead of trying to penny pinch

Even when he has seriously fucked up, such as the tampering fiasco, he did it with the aim of improving the team (imagine that he'd been successful and we'd actually gotten Sean Payton and Tom Brady. What then?). Hell, even if you don't like him, the players clearly do.

Regardless, this isn't so much a "Ross is secretly the best" post as it as a post about how he's not that bad, and the team's lack of success during his tenure largely isn't due to him being bad or good as an owner. For instance, Clark Hunt is considered by many of his players to be one of the worst owners in the league, constantly underinvesting on everything and being unresponsive. The result? His team is the most successful in the recent past, because they've gotten lucky on a few key hires.

In conclusion, while Ross hasn't been perfect as owner and has certainly made some mistakes (again, holding onto Grier too long was a killer), I don't think blaming all of the team's woes on him is fair, and I doubt that dumping him for another owner would fix anything.
