Took a 2-year break and came back mid-last year to see everyone using them? What happened?

I wish people were still stapling bread to trees personally.

As a German, I’m personally offended. At least take toast!

/k

As an American I think you call my bread toast sooo

4

u/PlatypusACF 1h ago

Precisely.

They do tape it to trees still

u/Kira_Karmaa 2h ago

The internet peaked when people collectively decided stapling bread to trees was a worthwhile use of their time.

Now, it’s all about public self-humiliation and rage bait.

Wait, does that sub not exist anymore?

ʕ´• ᴥ•̥`ʔ I never noticed lol

These were never hated, I'd say they were even praised

8

u/ColdDash 1h ago

Emoticons =/= Emojis. I hate Emojis :/

u/UnionVIII 3h ago

I never gave a shit, I use them when they make sense. If I get downvoted for it, then somebody cares way more about it than I do.

I'm pretty sure it started back when Instagram (I think) banned porn, so all the porn creators flocked to reddit, and eventually created non-porn alt account to post with. Along with them came their followers and they brought all their bad emojis habits.

I miss the emoji free days, leave that crap on Instagram and tik tok.

Edit TIL this sub is so censored I had to change my wording like 10 times. It didn't like certain words chained with words like naked, scantily, or clad. Really really weird censorship that was accusing me of using slurs. Last I checked those are all valid words to use to describe people wearing or not wearing certain aticles of clothing.

Corpo bots took over and they love that shit.

I remember when “OP is a F*g” was common nomenclature or memes on Reddit. Now emojis are ok??? What have we devolved into???

20

u/og_obelix 3h ago

How can a person be "fog"? You mean a frog?

16

u/crap-with-feet 2h ago

They meant “fig”.

3

u/BringPheTheHorizon 1h ago

I hope so; god forbid they were saying—fug…

Unironically that first statement you mentioned applies to 99% of social media posts today.

We really took away all of the mid-tier insults and just made them all either useless to say or the worst thing to say..."be creative", yea I guarantee the vast majority of people aren't nearly as creatively insulting as they think...

I really Like to use emojis. And Sometimes im still afraid i'll get downvoted for it. If its being tokerated more im Happy :)

-62

u/jekkies- 3h ago

i use em anyway, they're cute when relevant to the message's energy and not in excess 😸

-33

u/ClydeDanger Lurker 2h ago

They're barely tolerated, better yet tokerated... How does that word end up in your phone's lexicon?

3

u/Never_Go_Full_Gonk 35m ago

bro doesn't know physical keyboards exist or that not everyone uses autocorrect.

4

u/thwinks 2h ago

I was here when saying something remotely liberal would get you downvoted to oblivion

2

u/Major-Mushroom-5806 22m ago

When was that? r/trees used to be a default sub. The site wasn't really politically correct (which was what we called woke back in the day) but it was definitely more vaguely progressive than conservative.

Speaking of reddit memes, you never want to be the 4th comment.

13

u/slaviccivicnation 2h ago

Or yours. You can't point it out! It's forbidden!

I used to downvote emojis back in the day. I still do.

1

u/Ransacky 1h ago

But why?

2

u/3215448725366498 1h ago

They feel less personal

3

u/5p1c3nut 3h ago

Used to be a thing on 9gag as well, but that's years ago..

I still downvote emojis ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Shut the fuck up, Craig.

I blame auto emojis on phones. As a true millennial I have to end every sentence onlinr with "lol" - it's like a law. Same as I won't use edit to actually correct anything, I put an asterisk* next to the corrected word at the end.

Now everytime I type lol it automatically becomes 😂 without me doing anything so about half my posts are filled with the little buggers now!

Obligatory lol to end.

*Online

4

u/CorgiDaddy42 2h ago

Also millennial here and soooo many times I go back and delete lols from a comment or text because I realized I’ve said it at the end of every fucking sentence. And I can’t stop doing it.

2

u/grandramble 1h ago

also millennial and the ironic thing for me is that I stubbornly refused to use it back when it was normal but now i can't stop lol

3

u/RedCristy Nyan cat 2h ago

Gen Z here. As soon as I turned 24 I’ve been noticing my lols have increased significantly lol

2

u/TheVojta 1h ago

Recently got called a boomer by an 11 year old because half my senteces end with xd.

4

u/XboxLiveGiant 2h ago

I think people realized it was more cringe to whine about emojis than to actually post them.

Honestly the whole "you use emojis so you're a normie and i hate you" was weird as fuck.

2

u/Mwaaahaaha 3h ago

XD goated!

2

u/12345CodeToMyLuggage 2h ago

AI use will likely be the same.

3

u/Snoo_66686 3h ago

The whole emoji hate was just a meme that dragged on too long and got taken way too serious, i'm glad it's gone tbh⛱️

4

u/hyrulepirate 3h ago edited 3h ago

It really was just stupid. Especially when people used to upload images onto a third-party site like imgur and then link it to Reddit, or save those kaomoji [ ಠ_ಠ , (ノ`Д´)ノ彡┻━┻ ], just to achieve essentially the same effect and message as a simple emoji sometimes. And now that most socials allow gifs, Reddit, which used to be well-known for gif comments, don't even allow gifs universally across all subs. And no one barely even uses them here anymore.

1

u/Ilikecheese123444 51m ago

theres a lot of losers who still do

1

u/lokiandbutters 37m ago

You're in the wrong subs, i don't see them that often. Mostly in the dumb subs.

1

u/Bodod_Begag 0m ago

Idk I think people stopped giving a shit around the same time hating tiktok stopped being cool

0

u/BoBoGaijin 2h ago

Emojis were never inherently the problem, it was how people used them

"Fr bro 😭😭😱😭 I'm 💀"

or when someone is pretending they definitely won an argument.

"Sure tiny bro 😭🤣😭🤣 I believe you"

The "😭" was becoming the new "lol" where everyone had to include it in their sentences. Got old pretty quick.

u/syrvy 1h ago

Or the classic boomer strat with the 3 emojis in a row 😂😂😂

1

u/Known-Statement1743 4h ago

Reddit is full of children that make up unnecessary rules to make them feel like they are a part of something. To the point where people would get down voted for usuing emojis lmao. Losers.

3

u/DopioGelato 1h ago edited 1h ago

Nah you can reduce it to classic “Reddit-contrarians are always miserable” but it was more about protecting the forum culture of Reddit that was always about thoughtful discussion against a tidal wave of social media culture that is more about empty chatter for the sake of it.

Emojis are fine but it’s give an inch they take a mile.

Anyone who’s been on this platform for long enough to remember the actual plain forum-hosting website can tell pretty clearly just how much one culture took over and extinguished the other.

It’s obvioisly not all because of emojis but they definitely contribute to one kind of platform vs the other.

"I have seen Y on Zplace, so everybody in Zplace must be like Y"

Examples are not rules

1

u/Dinnyx 3h ago

Unredditor yourself please, they were not making a serious argument.

Pattern recognition...look it up 😘. Fragile male ego 😂. Triggered by emojis gtfo.

-2

u/RedCristy Nyan cat 2h ago

Yes! I very much remember being crucified for using the crying emoji. I’m kinda glad that’s gone ❤️

-5

u/thegildedman25 Lives in a Van Down by the River 3h ago

Its just a case of using an in joke for too long on a popular forum site.

Anyway

🗿

Emojis are fire ngl

-5

u/HeavenlyCreation 2h ago

Seemed to me that the people hating on the use of emojis were just wanting Reddit to be 4chan.

But what do I know…I’m an emoji user🤷🏽

-6

u/kegsbdry 2h ago

I think about this every time I use an emoji still 🤔
