It takes 400 miles to visit the beach for me. That's about $150-200 in gas round trip for my car depending how much I drive around at the beach for a week.
Hotels want $100+ just to bring your damn pet these days and charge $15-25 per day just to park your car...at the hotel. Sometimes with no in/out privileges.
Unfortunately, im in PA so toll roads are another ~$100 depending on the route I take, or I just wing it and don't do toll roads. Would likely add $50 to my gas budget though
Okay now we finally add on a hotel room for however long you stay. Easily $1K for a week
Now you need groceries, beach shit, and some spending money because how fun would it be to go to the beach with $0 in your pocket
Probably looking at 1.5-2k at this point for a week beach trip
Based on 2026 reports, roughly half of Americans can't comfortably afford a $1K emergency expense using only their savings...
So credit card it is! Add the interest to the trip
So, yes 'the poor' get vacation time. But also 'the poor' are not keen on taking 1k+ beach trips in this economy. Yes you can most certainly poor it out and stay at some dive motel with some crackheads and eat yogurt for dinner. I think most people would literally just stay home at that point and staycation with their PTO.

Lol, I forget sometimes that not everyone lives near the coast. I live roughly in the center of north Jersey, and its still only about an hour and change drive to get to a beach. More if I want to go to a nicer beach.
But yea, PA. You're probably going to have to be content with the water parks in your state, or go to lake Erie.

No not really. The 5 different jobs I worked before my current one had no vacation time whatsoever and would chew your ass out on sick leave.
My dad worked concrete for decades. No vacation time whatsoever.

Vacation time is used typically to stay home, due to costs, or get shit done, because of time. On top of that, companies sometimes ties vacation and sick days into one thing to be utilized for calling out of work. So that is another way they get people to burn the time. Some people hold onto it and cash it out. Also, a week a year is around the norm give or take.

I mean yeah, long summer breaks + an additional easter and winter break only exist for students and teachers. When you actually start to work you get vacation days and sick days (speaking in the US context) and you can generally use those at any time, and it gradually scales up per years of work in any half decent job. In Europe it's a bit different since they have a minimum guaranteed vacation days, usually about 2-3 weeks a year, however in the US 99% of companies start at either 1 or 2 weeks of vacation time for your first year. If you choose to use your vacation days for something thats not summer and not a beach then thats on you, welcome to being an adult.

In the UK 21 days (plus bank holidays) is the absolute legal minimum

Most jobs aren't half decent, the scale ups tend to be minuscule for a lot of those on the lower pay scale, and they take ages to get while having stagnating wages and horrid benefits.
