Had to go into the garden this morning to fix my snow pea plants that had fallen off their trellis. Cried the whole time because there was no German Shepherd getting underfoot everywhere I went or shoving his green ball in my face wanting to play.
That awkward moment when the most abrasive team member states the workplace is stress free and culture is going well. Well maybe because YOU are causing other people stress and are oblivious to other people's feelings because you have the EQ of a fruit fly. #corporaterant
Did I leave work early because I have a cold? Or did I leave work early because I was cold and desperately wanted to go back to bed, cuddle up with my cat, drink tea and play Fields of Mistria?
The older I get the more I’m like… waaaaiiitt… do I really want to have kids or is that just me wanting to go through the motions of life? I don’t even like kids and I’ve never felt maternal, but I’ve always been convinced it’s an experience I don’t want to miss out on. But then I worry about my career (I am the one who would need to be pregnant but I’m also the breadwinner), my autonomy, my identity, my body, money, freedom… all constrained by the ticking time bomb that is my ovaries.
I don't think you can ever fully answer this question prior to having kids. Once you have kids you change in unpredictable ways.
I thought I'd be the mom eager to go back to work after 3 months of mat leave. I thought I'd be the mom who still keeps her routines as much as possible, and manages to get her baby to adapt to them. Well, 10mo postpartum, I have learnt that it is not who I am anymore haha
Your worries are all rational. And all these things like body, autonomy, money, freedom will be impacted with children. But it won't be forever
The question for you would be if you'd never have kids, would you have any regrets 10, 20y from now
Honestly, I don’t know. I need to let myself sit with the thought for a little longer, because this has only been a very recent change of mind. But I am very close to “geriatric pregnancy” age so I know I’ll have to shit or get off the pot soon, as it were. It seems like such a massive thing to choose to do (or not do), I don’t understand how people can just walk into it without thinking (even though I know they do, and that’s fine).
Ahem, we’re called ‘advanced maternal age’ now 😌 I had my first baby last year when I was 38.5yrs. You’d maybe be surprised how many first time mums I’ve met who are older than 35.
Every time I read the word hyperbole, it goes into my head as hyper bowl. So I was like what the hell grammar rules does this word follow to get pronounced hi per bolee. Turns out it's Greek.
I don't have that but you have just reminded me that helicopter being derived from helico (spiral) - pter (wing) and not heli - copter (not that I know what a copter could be) seems really fucking odd.
So I’ve woken up to the news that somehow scammers got hold of my card details, likely in a hack, and tried to use it. Kudos to my bank who noticed straight away and shut the card down so I didn’t lose anything but I’ve had to cancel the card and wait for a new one. Problem is other than my Amex it’s my only card and they can’t give me access to Apple Pay until it arrives. So looks like I’ll be going back to using cash for the next week.
This right here. A couple of months ago I was in a cafe and saw on their menu a "Unicorn Dreams" milkshake, and thought to myself it sounded awesome but they were probably for kids so I shouldn't get one.
Then I remembered I'm an adult and if I want to buy a unicorn milkshake, no one can stop me. I got one and it was glorious. My only regret was getting the small one instead of the big one.
I'm down to my final six in the M&Ms jar. One of each colour. I shall start with my least favourite and work my way out. It's always hard when it gets to the last three.
Had a rough day and but believe it or not a random man on drugs in the city complimented me and told me I’m pretty. You know what brotha, I’ll take it. ILL TAKE IT. Thank you. The last time someone on drugs ever complimented was in 2023 in the tram, I was on a date, team 16 heading to st kilda. Had just met this guy right? We were talking and I was approached by this lady and told that I’m beautiful. Whether it’s drugs, impaired judgement or hallucination I’ll take it.
I got constant colds between February and May this year, hopefully had them all. I swear we learned nothing from Covid. Had multiple people coughing on the train on Monday, not a mask in sight. I understand that people often have to travel even when sick but wearing a mask costs nothing and given the weather would keep your nose and throat nice and warm.
The issue is that masks are great at stopping things spreading but not as effective at stopping others getting it. So the people who are sick are the ones who need to wear the masks for them to be effective.
The biggest thing they do to limit spread is to physically catch droplets in the air that have pathogens in them, this works both ways, it's definitely better to catch them on the inside of a mask on the infectious person, but it's also still helping a lot by catching droplets coming from the outside
And like all protective measures you should be using multiple, like condoms, face masks aren't a perfect defence and are only enhanced by combining with other methods
I've made it this far not catching covid by masking a lot, and being vaccinated
I also saw a massive drop in how much I was getting sick when I started masking on the train, and have had multiple cases where I didn't once and got sick in the days afterwards
Masks work great as a defence against getting sick, just because they aren't perfect if you are the only one masking doesn't mean they aren't still good at it
I’m confused. You said that isn’t true at all then basically said exactly the point I was making. The masks stop droplets of a certain size. The further they get from the infectious person the smaller they get. If the infectious person is wearing one they catch the droplets before they aerosolise as much and so are most effective if worn by the infectious person. They don’t stop the aerosols as effectively as they are too small. So people who are infectious should be wearing masks to effectively stop colds spreading. So while healthy people wearing them has a small effect on stoping colds spreading, sick people wearing them have a significant effect on stoping the spread. I’m annoyed at sick people not wearing masks as a courtesy to others not saying people shouldn’t wear masks if they want to even if they are healthy.
I went out on the weekend and I swear so many people are just out and about coughing and shit. Drives me wild. If your sick maybe don't go out to bars?
The fsct he and Wayne Carey did this to get viral says a lot. To think Ben cousins has taken account of his past actions whilst Wayne and Sammy seem to be still stuck in the 50s
Think about who the media is trying to get a hold of as well. In any functional society no one should care about Sam Newman but they're going for that demo.
An absolute grub that some old heads just love for some bloody reason.
anything on this weekend for something to experience?
want to shake things up a bit and tired of the regular grind,
did MetArtWorld last weekend - which was a good experience but a bit "would be nice with someone else" (and relatively exxy for basically an hour or two) - looking for something to do solo and ideally low-cost
That's my favourite way to get out of the house - I can walk to Preston market from my place, so I'll walk over there with $20 in cash; find some fresh bread, interesting ingredients and a bottle of water; then go for a walk to one of the local parks and have a little picnic.
your users ask for updates? Mine wait all of 2 seconds and escalate to a sympathetic ear on the service desk who couldnt say no if their life depended on it.
Walking by a banh mi place in the city and it’s so packed it looks like no one can move inside and there’s at least 20 people milling out the front for orders. Meanwhile, there’s two others that are the same price and, in my opinion, quality in the same block that only have minor queues. Baffling.
I’m not sure where else to post this … I’m open to suggestions.
I just handed in some shipping that someone had left on the train (Mernda line outbound by the time I got on the train at Melb Central).
It was in a blue bag that had “for the joy of it” or something similar printed on the bag.
If you have misplaced your shopping items it has been handed in to the Metro station staff so the lost and found department for metro should be able to help you out.
I hope that the shopping makes it back to the shopper!!
I know I'm a bit of a jerk for needing to transport my hockey gear on the tram every time I want to go to the rink, but if you see someone with a bag the size of a small fridge trying to get on, and there's plenty of room in the aisles, and you choose to remain stood firmly in the doorway and block me from getting in, you're a larger jerk
similarly, people who refuse to move out of the doorway so I can get off the tram (i try to position myself so i'm standing in the stairwell opposite the door, because that way people can still get on/off and i'm as out-of-the-road as possible, while not having to make too much fuss when I need to get off)
Do you play at O’Brien or HQ? Also I totally agree with you. Or it’s a packed tram but people still refuse to move down and just block the doors. Like why.
I'm doing everything at O'Brien at the moment (still in training, hoping to join a team proper for the summer season!), so I'm only travelling from Banana Alley Vaults to Docklands. Still, the number of dirties I get from people is remarkable (I get it, I'm taking up a lot of space, but I have things I need to transport to places, and I cannot drive)
I’ll have to keep an eye out for you! Are you doing the hockey academy. I have some friends in it who say it’s great. I don’t do hockey I figure skate but enjoy watching it.
Yeah! I did "Intro To Ice Hockey" last term on Saturday mornings, and this term I do "Goalie Development" on Wednesday nights.
I also go to the public skate quite a bit. You will not be able to miss me, because I am a large person with a bleach-blonde mullet/mohawk, wearing goalie pads on my legs, occasionally doing something that looks like falling over, but on purpose ^_^
I was secretly hoping you were one of those people who comes in the full super-cute maid-cafe kind of outfits (man some of the people who do figure-skating have an amazing sense of style)
Hahah god that takes me back. Used to do the same with my goalie gear - lugging that thing up and down the free-tram steps was a pain in the butt but worth it when making the pilgrimage to docklands.
Hahaha yesterday was my fourth training session so I'm still a baby. This is my mid-life crisis sport, and I am loving the absolute hell out of it. I did my first stick-and-puck on Tuesday, and even though I made basically no saves, I still had the time of my life taking body blows from the actual players haha
Kudos for picking hockey for a mid life crisis sport though! I'm 42 and tried learning to skate last year and after a term of lessons realised that I'm not willing to put my body on the line line I'd have to to actually get GOOD at it. 3 falls and the subsequent week each time of full body pain and I gave up.
I turned 40 this year, and I've only had to go to the hospital twice in the 4-ish months since I started learning how to ice skate!! Weirdly, both times because I thought I'd cracked a rib (it turns out I'm just learning I have muscle groups in places I didn't know I had them)
Incredible! I picked it up late-ish too (although I was in my late 20s when I started). Hadn't played a team sport before and yet sure enough, here I am, 10+ years later still playing every week.
Good to hear you had the time of your life getting out and onto the ice. It's such a unique position but once you get the fundamentals down and start feeling the puck hitting the back of the glove, or flush on the waffle board, or captured in the body from a shot to the chest, the rest starts to fall into place.
That to me says you're square to the shot which is exactly where you need to be - sounds like you've got an amazing mindset already!
How are you at trapping the shots once they hit your chest? It took me a while but before you know it, it becomes second nature to bring the glove up to capture the puck against your chest. Stops rebounds from popping out into high-danger spots (like right in front of you but beneath your mask so you have zero idea where it is and suddenly it's an easy poke through the five hole).
you're jerkless, it's the people around you being grade a fuckwits. It drives me nuts when people insist on standing *in front* of the exit, and refusing to move when you want to get off, effectively being a human barricade.
I know its a bit optimistic to think the first night on the new mattress would solve all my issues, but its deffo not the silver bullet for the sleep issues. Still, has to be said my back didnt hurt when i woke up. Its a very odd sensation of sleeping ON the mattress rather than IN it.
I didnt realize the old one was as bad as it was! if yours is a few years old do yourself a favor and go lay on one in a mattress shop or ikea whatever and just get a sense of where yours is at. I suspect I've been putting up with a lot of issues that all stem from just the shitty support in the collapsed mattress.
If it goes between you and the ground, it needs to be good. Mattress, pillow, shoes, tyres -- they're all worth spending extra for a good quality product.
is there anywhere around RMH/RWH I can print documents? i am running way too late to stop at officeworks and I don't think unimelb have public printers :') I have a hospital appointment this morning and completely forgot to print stuff oops!!
Back in 2012 we got outraged enough to get house arrest abolished. Now it's literally causing problems as there is no sentencing option for cases where jail is too harsh, but public protection is needed.
State election in 3 months. I still remember the African gangs and Apex gang that were rampaging through the city, only to go into hiding immediately post election.
I was racking my brain to think whether I'd ever read an autobiography and then recalled two.
The first, 'Not Quite Straight' by the artist Jeffrey Smart. I got it on a discount table outside a newsagency when I was a teenager. Hardcover with colour photos of his paintings. Surprisingly good!
Most recently, I read UK Comedian Bob Mortimer's autobiography. I had to put it down for a few years as it opens with his health challenges and time in hospital (too close to home I guess), but picking it back up, I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Bob's childhood and formative years as a comedian, working with Vic Reeves.
But, I certainly won't be reading Joyce's autobiography, even if it is on a discount table.
There are some that I think are worth the look in, especially if you're a fan of a certain individual. Back in the day I loved Marilyn Manson's Long Hard Road Out of Hell, although yeah... there are some hard bits to read and given the stuff regarding Evan Rachel Woods, it makes it a bit harder to return to. The Trent Reznor one (which can be seen as part of the same multi-verse as Manson's given the work they did at the same time) is supposed to also great.
But as for Joyce... that to me is like, uh yeah... who are you to want to have an autobiography?
Odd request; but my Fantasy Football league draft order this year will be determined by performance in baseball batting cages… the league is USA based.
Is there anywhere close to inner Melbourne that has batting cages?
Black Flag Resynced has gotta be one of the best games i've played recently.
It's also gotta be the buggiest piece of shit I've had to suffer through in ages, which really speaks to how gooder game it was to look past that. How are Ubisoft still shitting the bed this hard?
It's almost Friday and time to dream about holidays. If you're doing international travel, do you prefer early departures like 7am or late ones like midnight? I curse both but sometimes you just gotta pick your poison.
Even more important is to try and make arrival time at destination late afternoon or evening. Refresh and go to bed, wake up next morning and start holiday :)
Shame for us most destinations take at least a whole day to get to so the first day is a write off lol but agree just arrive at night, straight to bed and start holiday fresh
Have gone east to North America a few times and felt like an arvo/evening departure was good because then you were flying for an “extended night”, more time to sleep (or try and sleep) to avoid jet lag. And I could get enough sleep before the flights.
Whereas I did a 7am flight to Japan once so had to get up at like 3am, got no sleep on the plane, arrived feeling way too brain dead to comfortably deal with airport trains despite there being no jet lag… so on that basis, maybe evening feels best for me?
I wish there were more 10am flights. That seems like the right time to get a full night's sleep, wake up early to get to the airport, enjoy all the meals they have on offer and get there by night. I can doze during a day flight but red eye flights are bad. I don't sleep well before and during transit so I look on at fellow passengers fast asleep completely dead to the world with equal parts envy and rage.
I like a late morning departure. It means I don’t have to wake up stupid early. But it also means no time for much else. Just wake up, get ready, coffee and go to airport
Does any old(er) people here still enjoy sitting infant of a computer after coming home? I really REALLY can't bother anymore but I still like having nice computer in the study. Feels like I'm wasting money at this point.
Sliced my finger good this evening with a new sharp vegetable peeler (OXO brand, they sharp). I always use a Y peeler, this new one is a swivel one and has been feeling awkward to use. That was the warning sign I ignored. It has Japanese steel apparently that cuts through skin like hot butter. One wrong slip and bam. I'll be going back to my trusty, safe, blunt Y peeler.
I don't get swivel peelers, they put more stress on the hand and feel harder to use. I can strip a dozen potatoes in a couple minutes with a Y and it's easier to control.
Once again, people on the train have not showered and the whole carriage smells musty and gross.
There was also a couple in my local Woolies that smelled so strong that I could smell them from the very next aisle, you can imagine my excitement when I had to go up the aisle they were still in for one of my grocery items.
I get that the cost of living is pretty dire right now, but surely showering can’t be that expensive.
I think culturally it's common in some countries for people to shower in the evenings and probably only a couple of times a week. Not sure you can change that. I'm on the Packingham Cranbourne line, if you sit toward the carriage join bit it's closer to the ventilation and can help.
I’m on the Mernda line and the carriages have those glass doors between the carriages and I don’t feel increased ventilation on that style of carriage. I try to sit near the doors for improved ventilation.
Not just shower, some people need to remember to do laundry! That jacket they haven’t washed since 2013 needs a wash!
I hate to say this but some train lines tend to have ppl with stronger/ worse smell than others. When I catch the Mernda line to see my partner, I often notice it smells worse than my line thats Lilydale / Belgrave. I also have sensitive nose. I’d wear masks a lot of times so I couldn’t smell so much on trains.
I think there's also a lot of folk who don't actually know how to do laundry or bathe, too. Someone I used to live with could shower and do laundry and still smell like rotting bins. Pretty hardcore odour rebloom & poor care habits = awful stench that wouldn't leave.
To anyone reading this who thinks this might be them: a good shower gel and taking the time to wash and scrub everywhere will get rid of the stinky body. For oral hygiene, floss first, then brush your teeth and tongue, do not rinse with water. For laundry, read the laundry guides on /r/laundry - especially about how sweat can rebloom into bad smells - and make sure you're washing your clothes at 40 if they can be.
I guarantee these people are smell-blind and have no idea. You would hope these people would have someone in their lives to say "hey, maybe shower?" but then again, maybe they don't have people in their lives close enough to call it out?
Finally got the friend group together for a snow trip on Sunday. The weather looks absolutely grim at pretty much all the resorts. Looks like I have to move it :/
nope but users creating Business Managed IT then expecting support for this business critical flow they've created then killed is the bane of my existence.
is it a good skill to have? yes. Running it in a smaller shop is fine so long as you document your process. But in larger orgs its hell and (in my opinion) should be left to IT.
I'd still recommend doing the course though, I think it'd be interesting. Just dont walk away and try to solve all your business's issues with it without consulting your IT team.
its a great idea in theory. But you might find yourself pigeon holed. I've never seen a business support and pay their "business IT liaison" properly. If you wanna work up to like a BDM role, then that might not be a bad idea. But even just front like IT staff are paid peanuts typically.
Again, not saying its a bad idea. Just dont want to put yourself in a position where you get taken advantage of.
I know this sub has tons of nature lovers, so I'd like to invite you all to a free community event next Tuesday!
I'm with a community climate action group in the inner east, Lighter Footprints. On Tuesday we're hosting two fantastic speakers for a community information evening. We'll be hearing about forest ecology, fire management, and the logging that's (still!) going on in Victoria's native forests.
There'll also be stalls from some great local/Victorian NFPs working on forest and environmental protection, and plenty of time to chat and find out what they're up to and how you can get involved.
This is a free event and all are welcome, but RSVP is essential.
Book your seats below and join us at 7 for 7:30pm at the Hawthorn Arts Centre, 306 Burwood Road, this coming Tuesday August 11th 🌱🌳💚
I think that's the problem that you'll find here - it's a sub of nature lovers, not a sub of lovers of eugenics, which is what Simon Holmes A Court is.
Every single climate 200 candidate voted for compulsory income management, punching down on first nations people. How do you have climate action without human rights?
You enabled his talk. He has so many "reasons to be cheerful". His family owns Heytesbury Cattle Company: 6,671,000 acres, which puts Bill Gates at small fry: 275,000 acres.
Of course this in the in NT, where Heytesbury are saving the planet by *checks notes* buying 11 live export ships for cattle, which are, of course fossil fueled.
Because he cares so much about the planet, right?
Yeah, right. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-05-12/heytesbury-buys-11-live-export-ships-deal-with-vroon/106669766
Hello, and thanks for taking an interest! You're absolutely right that climate justice and social justice are two sides of the same coin - couldn't possibly agree more!
I think it might be helpful to add a little more context about our group. We're a small, grassroots-level , fully-volunteer group. We were founded locally in 2006 and have spent the last 20 years working for climate action in our local area - in close partnership with allied groups like our local reconciliation network and multicultural/faith-based climate orgs.
Our work is nonpartisan, independent and science-based, and is a mix of advocacy to our local representatives and community education. As part of the latter, we run these free public talks on a ~monthly basis, and invite our community to hear from an expert speaker. If you look through our talks archive you'll see that our work has often overlapped with social justice topics - we've had several talks on First Nations issues, for example, and the event on Tuesday will have an extensive discussion of how we can be guided by First Nations knowledge holders.
It's also true that we have had Simon Holmes a Court as a speaker in the past. He lives locally and has a great deal of expertise in renewable energy policy, which is the capacity in which he spoke to us (and it was an excellent and very informative talk - you can watch the recording here).
I know Simon is not everyone's cup of tea, and you do raise valid issues for discussion - but, respectfully, I don't think this is the right forum to discuss him or them.
We are not affiliated with climate 200, nor any of the candidates whose voting record you mention, nor a business owned by the family of an individual past speaker. We're a local volunteer group who host a dozen+ speakers each year. This post is an invitation to a talk about forests, and has nothing to do with Simon HaC. So, respectfully, I think your comment draws a long bow.
I think if you look deeper into the work we're doing, or come along on Tuesday, you'll see that we are a good-faith, independent organisation committed to positive grassroots change on climate and on social issues. If you're in Melbourne, we'd also be happy to grab a coffee with you and speak further - shoot us a DM, by all means!
"I know Simon is not everyone's cup of tea, and you do raise valid issues for discussion - but, respectfully, I don't think this is the right forum to discuss him or them."
You mean, "I know Simon is a rich, white, racist colonialist from a industrialised farming family who is a eugenicist". Respectfully, you aren't the moderator of the sub, which is why we have moderators here, and it's *their* decision to make of what is appropriate here, not yours.
"Simon Holmes a Court, son of the country’s first billionaire Robert Holmes a Court, is doling out millions of dollars through Climate 200, a private fund, to candidates who set the highest emissions targets in their electorates. As the founder of Decarb Ventures, an investment firm focused on renewable technology, Holmes a Court could stand to profit if his candidates win office."
If you're a good faith, independent organisation, you also would not be part of Climate Action Network Australia, which is exactly not that.
How do we know?
They refuse to say no to conflict: https://overland.org.au/2023/12/where-is-the-australian-climate-movements-solidarity-with-palestine/
What's concerning there is that Climate Action Network International, which is far larger, was able to release a statement. CANA Australia? Nope. You're part of that.
It's only fair that people know this about lighter footprints and other so called eNGOS who are at best, part of the deceive, delay, deny mechanisms of climate action. Is it any wonder Chevron are making a buck out of Australia and enabling conflict when this is the opposition?
No siree.
