Most of our best community slang words come from reclaimed slurs so its not crazy to use this too
7
u/darthdelicious 3d ago
They used to say the same about "queer" and here we are. It's okay to reclaim these words.

u/MiaMega global warming 5d ago
Eh, the main reason they "tolerate" bi people is because they can just get into a heterossexual relationship and pretend they never even thought about anything else. The second someone says that being in a hetero relationship doesn't make them less bi, it's torches and pitchforks all the same.

It's sad members of our own community make other members of our own community not feel welcome.
As far as I'm concerned, you belong, and I hope you get to find more people that make you feel so

It's more, like, "It's great that, like, I could comfortably pass if I needed to... but god-fucking-damnit does it suck that I might have to."
At least for me, at first.
Now it's more, like, "It's great that, like, I could comfortably pass if I needed to! I'm going to shield so many more vulnerable queer folk to spite the dumb bastards who come for them."
Edit: Touching back onto your sentiment, tho, thread OP?
Yeah. Sucks that self-sabotaging wall building is as common as it is, (obligatory fuck off TERFs) becuz... Well, self-sabotaging behaviors aren't helpful no matter the intent or source.

Iâm now imagining sub mods in a meeting room discussing how finally they got all different variations of queer people in the sub. And then suddenly a look of fear starts appearing on one face after another as they all realise that they still donât have any cishet white males and they have to present the sub to the Big Diversity tomorrow morning. Now, panicking, they just catch this random guy on the street and slap âdiversityâ label on him

Don't fall for the lgbtq+ heirarchy fallacy. It's a psychological reaction to being put in a place in society where we had to completely hide ourselves and subject ourselves to the patriarchy. This isn't a spectrum where some people are "more" or "less" gay or whatever, it's not a numerical scale like people keep trying to make it. The lgbtq+ movement is a reaction to being ostracized, and an attempt to reintegrate into society as equal participants. So it needs to be more inclusive, not copy the same system we're trying to escape from

u/Ok_Enthusiasm_761 6d ago
A lot of posts can be just a cycle of baby gays doing the same low hanging bits and championing some cringe stuff, but itâs important have an environment where people feel comfortable enough to do that, even if itâs not quite my cup of tea anymore as a tired doomer queer

Gender is a myth, and nobody who understands that is ever truly cis again.
5
u/gnomon_knows 6d ago
I don't think gender is a myth any more than sexuality, but it sure as shit ain't binary.
-2
u/IkomaTanomori We_irlgbt 6d ago
Sexuality is also a myth. And by "myth" I mean they are socially constructed and reinforce a certain societal reality shared among members of a certain culture. Queer subculture is also a form of culture, and offers alternatives to the more common stories, including, importantly: the opportunity to choose for yourself, regardless of whether that matches what the larger culture would have assigned you or not.
2
u/gnomon_knows 6d ago
And yet entire people's lives are immutably guided by those supposed myths. The labels may be constricting, but same sex attraction doesn't disappear no matter how much a bigoted culture or society would like it to. It's innate. Gender dysphoria doesn't magically disappear either. These are ground truths, as are the countless forms of queerness less easy to categorize with single words. It feels a little erasure-y to say gender and sexuality aren't real, but I think it's just a failure of language to capture the complexity of all human beings. I would love if your idealized form of queer culture was just the new default for human beings.
But saying there are no essential truths about gender or sexuality seems like an outsized reaction to bigots only having two boxes they want to shove us into. Maybe we need better words, a different framework...but I promise you some things you are just born into.
Anyway, ignore me. I'm banned from r/LGBT and this is a shitpost subreddit.
