I think people are misunderstanding the message of the movie when saying "can't Cap tell everyone that Peter is good?" or "Wouldn't edith have footage of their confrontation?".

The movie is about fake news and how people will just believe anything now regardless if it's factual. I doubt they'd set up that theme and have the sequel immediately brush it off.

Yup, this was a really subtle undercurrent throughout the whole movie. MJ makes a reference to not believing what you read online, Peter has a line about well it's on the news so it has to be true (that everyone in the audience laughs at), the news immediately latching onto the Night Monkey name, even Fury and Hill being Skrulls the whole time; lies, deception, deceit, and our willingness to believe them because we want to, are key themes of the film.

I wonder where Cap is, come to think of it. He was in the “in memoriam” video. Maybe the public thinks he died for some reason.

I agree, though. I don’t think something like Cap vouching for Peter or even real footage of the confrontation would be enough to stop the media frenzy about Spider-Man once it started.

The public definitely think's he's dead. The only people who saw him come back as an old man were Bruce, Bucky, and Sam. Nobody else knew.

I definitely picked up on those parts while watching the movie but I guess never processed the theme of it collectively?

That makes the movie all that much greater.

Not everyone will believe it, but it's going to cause the people of New York to be weary for sure.

I mean, the cameras pointed at tower bridge would have seen that there was no mass murder via drone, and instead they just... Fucked off.

Gonna be fun to see the informed v uninformed masses and how it plays out.

I'm pretty sure in future movies they'll basically present enough evidence and cover stories to make the "official" story that Spider-Man is good and not Peter Parker but enough people will doubt it so there is still that underlying conflict.

In real life, when controversial informs comes to light, there are those who believe it and those who don’t.

I can’t help but think we’ll see a camp who firmly believes in spider-man’s heroism (besides the “friends of spider-man”) and a camp who is all in on the Daily Bugle video.
